and Elizabeth PANKHURST (?-1606)
and Mary WHITTON (?-1612)
and Sybil GRAYE (?-1631)

William Fowl and Elizabeth Penkherst were my 11x Great
Grandparents. They married on 8 February 1590/1 in Mayfield, Sussex.
They were both then of Wadhurst. Sussex. As William Fowle, gent he
married for a second time to Mary Whitton on 13 January 1606/7 in
Frant, Sussex. She was then of Lamberhurst, Kent. He then
married for a third time to Sybil Graye by licence on 12 June 1614 in
Frant. Their marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes
on 27 May 1614 and recorded that William was of Frant and Sybil a widow of
Horsted Keynes, Sussex.
William Fowle was baptised on 5 January 1567/8 in Frant. He was the son
Nicholas Fowle
(c1522-1599) and
Eleanor Isted.
He was buried on 30 April 1634 in Frant. His will was proved in 1634.
Between 10 and 11pm on 6 July 1591,
Nicholas Barham who together with William Fowle
were assualted on the road at Frant, by
Nicholas Frier a tailor of Mayfield and William Tolherst a yeoman
of Withyham. On that occasion, Nicholas was robbed of a cloak worth
40s., a hat worth 6s. and a purse containing 3s. in money.
Elizabeth Pankhurst was the daughter of William Pankhurst of
Mayfield and
Elizabeth. She died in 1606 and was buried in Frant. Her mother was a widow by the time Elizabeth married
William.
Mary Whitton died in 1612 and was buried in Frant.

1631.
William Fowle
and Elizabeth Pankhurst had 6 known children:
-
Frances Fowle married John Maynard.

Bridgett Fowle married James Cornewalle of Mordevyn (Marden?) in Kent.
-
Anne Fowle married Abraham Edwards of Portslade,
Sussex.
-
Barbara Fowle was mentioned in her father's will as the wife of
Thomas Clark. Her father left her the properties known as
Stumletts and Bysketts. Thomas and Barbara had married by licence on
21 June 1632 at the parish church of All Saints in Lewes, Sussex.
Their marriage licence was issued the day before by the Archdeaconry of
Lewes, which recorded that Barbara was a spinster and Thomas a mason and
they were both of Frant.
-
Helen
Fowle, my 11x Great Grandmother, married
David
Barham in 1622. (They have their own page.)
-
William Fowle was baptised on 1 July
1604 and buried on 6 September 1658. His will was proved in November
1658. He was a gent of Riverhall. William was mentioned in his
father's will, by which he inherited Riverhall and a share of Nutley,
which his father had acquired in 1610.

He inherited Riverhall. One source says that he, rather than his

he died before his father as he was described as deceased in his
father's will. He was probably buried on 22 April 1704 in
Wadhurst and his will proved on 12 June 1711.
Nicholas married Mary Haslen by licence
on 14 August 1699. She was the daughter of Henry Haslen.
