Nicholas FOWLE (c1522-1599)

and Eleanor ISTED (?-?)

Nicholas Fowle and Eleanor Isted were my 12x Great Grandparents.  They may have married after 1552.  Nicholas may have first married Joan Langareg (or Joan Langridge) on 9 November 1552 in Rotherfield.

Nicholas Fowle may have been born in about 1522.  He  was the son of William Fowle (c1500-1566) and Margaret Godive or Margaret Goddin.  He died on 2 November 1599.  He was an Iron Master and with the profits from his business, he and his son William built the house at Riverhall in Wadhurst in 1591.  They built another house at Lightlands in Frant.  (Lightlands was eventually purchased by William Stickland in 1657, and he was my 9x Great Grandfather.)  He was mentioned in his father's will of 1560 and was appointed a joint executor, along with his brother Anthony.

His will was dated 24 October 1599 and proved on 8 November 1600.  (I have a copy of this document, which covers 6 pages and is very difficult to read.)  By his will he requested to be buried in Rotherfield.  Amongst the many bequests he mentions:  his brother Anthony Fowle; 6 daughters, but not their names; his only son William Fowle; brother Thomas Markwicke; John Barham of Butts; John Lucke of Durgatte; sons in law John Polhill and John Dunmoll; Nicholas Fowle son of his son William Fowle; granddaughters Elizabeth Fowle, Frances Fowle, Dorothy Fowle and Helen Fowle, daughters of his son William; John Carpenter; Walter *en*ley; William Maynard; William ***mer; Mary Mannser his daughter's daughter; John Mannser his daughter's son; Margaret Curde; Jane (possibly Petter or Potter); *lyrs Barham; John Groombridge; William Norton; Nicholas Polhill his daughter's son.

Eleanor Isted may have been born in the 1530's.  She  was the daughter of Richard Isted (c1500-c1542) of Moate in Mayfield and Joane (?-1557).  Her sister Alice Isted married John Barham (c1535-1583).  The Isteds and Barhams, like the Fowles were Iron Masters in the Sussex Weald.

Nicholas Fowle and Eleanor Isted had the following children:

  1. Nicholas Fowle died before his father.  His death was reported at Court 27 July 1587.  He was mentioned in his Grandfather William Fowle's will dated 6 September 1560.

  2. Elizabeth Fowle may have been born after 1555 as her youngest son was born in 1599.  She was mentioned in her grandfather William Fowle's will dated 6 September 1560.

    Elizabeth married John Polhill.

They lived at Frenches or Franchise, to the north of Burwash.

John died in 1611 and was buried in Burwash.  His will may have been proved on 22 October 1613, when he was describe as a Gentleman of Burwash.

John and Elizabeth had at least 3 children:

    1. Nicholas Polhill was mentioned in his Grandfather's 1599 will.

    2. Edward Polhill was the second son and was the Rector Etchingham, Sussex.  He may have been born between 1588 and 1593.

    3. Robert Polhill was baptised on 25 March 1599 in Burwash.  He was the youngest son and his father's heir.

  3. William Fowle was baptised on 17 May 1560 in Frant and probably died as an infant, although he was mentioned in his grandfather's will dated 6 September 1560.

  4. Dorothy Fowle may have been born after 1560 as she was not mentioned in her Grandfather's 1560 will.

Dorothy married John Dunmoll of Wadhurst.

John was the son of Thomas Dunmoll of Aynsford, Kent. His will was dated 18 January 1624/5, in which he mentioned his son-in-law John Barham and brother-in-law William Fowle.

    They had 5 known children:

    1. Thomas Dunmoll

    2. James Dunmoll married Susan Cooke, the daughter of John Cooke of Merwood, Kent

    3. John Dunmoll died after 1634.

John married Ann Porter, the daughter of Robert Porter of Burwash, Sussex.

John and Ann had the following children:

      1. Robert Dunmoll

      2. Nicholas Dunmoll

      3. Joseph Dunmoll

      4. John Dunmoll

      5. Dorothy Dunmoll

      6. Mary Dunmoll

      7. Ann Dunmoll

    4. Elizabeth Dunmoll was possibly born between 1590-3.  She married John Barham (c1587-1640).

    5. Ellen Dunmoll married Nevil Uawyn of Barth.

  5. William Fowle, my 11x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 5 January 1567/8 in Frant.  He married 3 times.  (They have their own page.)

  6. Thomas Fowle was baptised on 14 January 1569/70 in Frant.
