Stephen FORD (1819-1870)

and Caroline BACK (1829-?)

Stephen Ford and Caroline Back married on 23 May 1847 at St. Nicholas, Brighton, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Caroline was the sister of my 3x Great Grandmother, Ann Back.)

Stephen Ford was born on 28 August 1819 and baptised on 26 September 1819 in Stanmer, Sussex.  He was the son of John Ford and Lucy Hammond.  Stephen died aged 51 years and his death was registered in the fourth quarter of 1870 in the Brighton registration district.

Caroline Back was baptised on 20 September 1829 at St. Nicholas, Brighton, at which time her parents were living in Pimlico, Brighton and her father was a labourer.  She was the daughter of George Back (1797-?) and Ann Streeter (1797-1879).

When the 1851 census was recorded the family were living at 8 Nelson Row, Brighton.  Stephen was then a 32 year old labourer and Caroline was said to be 25.  Stephen gave his place of birth as Stanmer.

In 1861 the family were living at 10 Brunswick Court in Brighton.  Stephen was then a bricklayer's labourer and Caroline a nurse.

Caroline was a 42 year old widow and charwoman when the 1871 census was recorded, and she was living with her children at 24 Apollo Terrace in Brighton.

In 1881 Caroline was a 50 year old washerwoman living at 10 Ivory Buildings in Brighton, along with son John and daughter Emily.

Stephen Ford and Caroline Back had 10 known children:

  1. William John Ford was baptised on 15 October 1848 at St. Nicholas, Brighton.  He was 3 years old in 1851.  In 1861 he was 12 years old and living at home with his parents.  He was a 22 year old butcher in 1871 and living with his mother and siblings.

  2. Jane Ford was baptised on 4 May 1851 in Brighton.  She was 2 months old when the 1851 census was recorded.  In 1861 she was a 10 year old scholar.  She was a 20 year old ironer in 1871, and she was living at home.

  3. Stephen Ford was born in the third quarter of 1853 in Brighton.  He was an 8 year old scholar in 1861.  In 1871 he was a 17 year old labourer living at home.

  4. Caroline Ford was baptised on 23 November 1855 at St. Nicholas, Brighton.  The death of a Caroline Ford was registered in the first quarter of 1856 in Brighton.

  5. George Ford was born in the fourth quarter of 1855 in Brighton (I assume he and Caroline were twins).  In 1861 he was a 5 year old scholar.  He was a 15 year old labourer in 1871.

George married twice, firstly to Ellen Bassett in the second quarter of 1878 in Brighton.

Ellen may have been baptised on 27 June 1859 at St. Nicholas, Brighton, and was the daughter of George Bassett and Jane Ann Barnard.  The death of a 27 year old Ellen Foord was registered in the third quarter of 1883 in the Brighton registration district.

In 1881 the couple and their 2 children were living at 6 Hanover Street, Brighton.  George was then a 26 year old labourer and Ellen was 24.  They were sharing the property with 56 year old widow and laundress, Louisa Grinyer and 81 year old widow Jane Watts.

George and Ellen had 2 known (to me) children:

    1. Jane Bassett was baptised on 27 May 1878 at St. Peters, Brighton, the daughter of Ellen Bassett.  The 1881 census records that Jane Ford was a 3 year old scholar.  She was a 14 year old scholar in 1891 and living at home with her father and step-mother.

    2. George Ford was born in 1880 in Brighton.  At the time of the 1881 census he was 6 months old.  He was a 10 year old scholar in 1891.

George next married Kate Solman in the third quarter of 1887 in the Steyning registration district.

Kate was born about 1855 in Suffolk, at what looks like Eddwardston in the 1891 census.

When the 1891 census was recorded the couple were living at 92 Livingstone Road in Hove, along with their 2 children and George's 2 children from his previous marriage.  George was then a 35 year old bricklayer's labourer and Kate was 36 years old and doing laundry work.  They were sharing the property with 32 year old Albert Davey and his 33 year old wife Sarah A. Davey.

George and Kate had the following known (to me) children:

    1. Kate Emily Ford was born in the third quarter of 1888 in Hove.  She was 2 years old in 1891.

    2. Lilian Ford was born in 1890 in Hove.  At the time of the 1891 census she was 8 months old.

  6. Caroline Ford was born about 1858 in Brighton.  She was 3 years old in 1861.  In 1871 she was 14 years old.  (I have not found a birth registration for her in Brighton at FreeBMD.)

  7. Ann Ford was baptised on 21 October 1860 at St. Nicholas, Brighton.  The birth of an Annie Ford was registered in the fourth quarter of 1860 in Brighton.  When the 1861 census was recorded she was 7 months old.  She was 12 years old in 1871.

  8. John Ford was born in the third quarter of 1863 in Brighton.  He was 8 years old in 1871.  In 1881 he was a 17 year old coal boy.

John married Eliza Fanny Graimes in the second quarter of 1884 in the Steyning registration district.

Eliza Fanny Graham was baptised on 2 October 1864 in Brighton and was the daughter of James Graimes and Eliza Harman (they had married on 22 May 1864 in Brighton).  In 1871, Eliza was 7 years old and living with her parents, 2 younger brothers and her maternal grandmother, Sarah Harmond who was a 65 year old charwoman.  Her father was then a stableman.  (James Henry Graham was baptised on 3 April 1842 in Brighton, and was the son of Henry Graham and Mary.)

When the 1891 census was recorded the couple and their 3 sons were living at 78 Livingstone Road, Hove.  John was then a labourer.  His younger sister was also part of his household.  They were sharing the property with 52 year old widower, James Graimes who was a fly proprietor, and his 3 children.

In 1901, the couple and their 7 children were still at 78 Livingstone Road, and 60 year old James Graimes was the head of the household.

John and Eliza had the following known children:

    1. John James Ford was born in the second quarter of 1884 in Hove.  He was a 7 year old scholar in 1891.  In 1901 he was a 16 year old labourer living at home.  He married Annie Louisa Green in the second quarter of 1910 in the Steyning registration district.

    2. William Ford was born about 1886/7 in Hove.  In 1891 he was a 5 year old scholar.  He was a 14 year old errand boy in 1901.  Might his birth have been registered as Stanley William Ford in the second quarter of 1886 in Brighton?

    3. James Ford was born in the fourth quarter of 1889 in Hove.  He was 2 years old when the 1891 census was recorded.  In 1901 he was 11 years old.  Might his birth have been registered as James Conroy Ford in the first quarter of 1889 in Brighton?

    4. Thomas Ford was born in the first quarter of 1891 in Hove.  In 1901 he was 10 years old.

    5. Emily Eliza Ford was born in the fourth quarter of 1893 in Hove.  The 1901 census records that she was 6 year old Eliza Ford.

    6. Martha Elizabeth Ford was born in the second quarter of 1895 in Hove.  In 1901 she was 5 years old.

    7. Nellie Ford was born in the third quarter of 1897 in Hove.  She was 3 years old in 1901.

  9. Charles Ford was born in in the first quarter of 1866 in Brighton.  In 1871 he was 5 years old.

Charles married Charlotte Wisdom in the third quarter of 1887 in the Steyning registration district.

Charlotte was baptised on 4 February 1866 at St. Nicholas, Brighton and was the daughter of Jonathan Warner Wisdom (c1835-?) and Selina Smith (c1834-?).  When the 1871 census was recorded she was a 5 year old scholar and living with her parents and elder siblings at 24 Lavender Street in Brighton.  Her father was then a barber.

When the 1891 census was recorded the couple were both 25 year old visitors in the home of 30 year old Jim Barnet at 86 Clarendon Road, Hove.  Also with them was their young daughter.

Charles and Charlotte had the following known (to me) child:

    1. Charlotte Ford was born about 1888 in Hove.  She was 3 years old in 1891.

  10. Emily Eliza Ford was born in the second quarter of 1870 in Brighton.  She was a year old at the time of the 1871 census.  In 1881 she was an 11 year old scholar.  In 1891 she was a 20 year old ironer living with her the family of brother John.
