Michael FIELD (1687-1761)

and Mary CHURCHMAN (1698-?)

 

Michael Field and Mary Churchman married on 30 May 1717 in Rudgwick, Sussex.  The Sussex marriage index records a marriage licence was issued to them on 21 May 1717 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes.  He was then a yeoman of Cuckfield and she a spinster from Rudgwick.

Michael Field may have been baptised on 31 July 1687 in Bolney, Sussex and have been the son of Thomas Field and Elizabeth.  However, another Michael Field was baptised on 9 June 1690 in Ditchling, Sussex, the son of Thomas Field and Jane.  He left a will dated 29 April 1759 and appointed his youngest sons, Churchman and John as joint executors.  He also left them the farm and lands called Broxmead and Great Merryfields, Little Merryfields.  Michael was buried on 3 December 1761 in Cuckfield, Sussex.

Mary Churchman was baptised on 20 December 1698 in Slinfold, Sussex.  She was the daughter of William Churchman and Mary Dendy.  Mary was mentioned in her husband's will.

 

Michael Field and Mary Churchman had 13 known children:

  1. Michael Field was baptised on 21 August 1718 in Cuckfield.  He was mentioned as the eldest son in his father's will, by which he received a legacy of 5 per year.  He may have been buried on 4 June 1780 in Cuckfield.

  2. Mary Field was baptised on 8 April 1720 in Cuckfield and probably died young.

  3. Sarah Field was baptised on 15 November 1721 in Cuckfield.  She mentioned in her father's will as the wife of John Hamper, and she received a legacy of 1 to paid annually for 4 years after the decease of her father.

    Sarah married John Hamper on 19 September 1748 in Horsham, Sussex.

    John was left a legacy of 5 shillings by his father-in-law.

    John and Sarah had the following children:

    1. Lydia Hamper married ? Morey.

    2. Mary Hamper married ? Lewis.

    3. John Hamper

    4. Martha Hamper married William Myrth.

  4. Catharine Field was baptised on 17 April 1723 in Cuckfield.  She was mentioned in her father's will as the wife of George Stedman, and she received a legacy of 1 shilling and six pence to be paid weekly for 4 years after the decease of her father.

    Catherine married George Stedman on 25 April 1749 in Cuckfield.

    George was left a legacy of 5 shillings by his father-in-law.

    George and Catherine had the following children:

    1. George Stedman was baptised on 25 August 1754 in Bolney.

    2. John Stedman was baptised on 8 April 1759 in Bolney.

    3. Mary Stedman married Thomas Bannister.

      Thomas and Mary had the following child:

      1. Mary Bannister

    4. Catherine Stedman married Thomas Bilcliffe.

  5. Jane Field was baptised privately on 26 August 1724 in Cuckfield and buried there as an infant on 30 August 1724.

  6. James Field was baptised on 30 December 1725 in Bolney.  He was mentioned as the second son in his father's will, by which he received a legacy of 20 shillings to be paid quarterly.  He died before 1815 as he was mentioned as late brother in the 1815 will of his brother Churchman Field.  James married Ann.  (They have their own page.)

  7. Elizabeth Field was baptised on 1 February 1727/8 in Cuckfield.  She was mentioned in her father's will as Betty wife of Joseph Potter, and she received a legacy of 50 to be paid 12 months after her father's death.

    Elizabeth married Joseph Potter on 29 January 1754 in Slaugham, Sussex.  She was then from Ardingly.

    Joseph was left a legacy of 5 shillings by his father-in-law.

    Joseph and Elizabeth had the following children:

    1. Joseph Potter

    2. William Potter

    3. Ann Potter married Hubble.

    4. Mary Potter married William Coles.

    5. John Potter

  8. William Field was baptised on 30 August 1729 in Cuckfield and buried there on 9 December 1729.  The burial register noted he was the son of Michael and Mary.

  9. Thomas Field was baptised on 19 November 1730 in Cuckfield.  He was mentioned in his father's will, by which he received a legacy of 6 shillings and 6 pence to be paid monthly for his natural life.

  10. Churchman Field was baptised on 10 December 1732 in Cuckfield and most probably died as an infant.

  11. Churchman Field was baptised on 21 January 1734/5 in Cuckfield.  He left a will dated 7 February 1811 and proved on 27 May 1815.  He was then a yeoman on Bletchingly.

    Churchman married twice, firstly to Anne Blackmire on 3 January 1771 in Bletchingley, Surrey.  He next married married Ann Wallis on 30 June 1780 in Bletchingley.

  12. Mary Field was baptised on 27 February 1737/8 in Cuckfield.  She was mentioned in her father's will as his youngest daughter, and she received a legacy of 50 to be paid 12 months after his death.

    4. Elizabeth Weaire married James Sanderson.

      James and Elizabeth had the following child:

  13. John Field was baptised on 6 April 1743 in Cuckfield.  He died after 1815.  He was mentioned in the will of his brother Churchman Field.

    John married Sarah Willett by banns on 7 April 1763 in Cowfold.  He was then from West Grinstead and she of Cowfold.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Field and Walter Hills.

    Sarah was mentioned in the will of her brother-in-law Churchman Field.

    John had the following children:

    1. Sarah Field was baptised on 22 January 1764 in Cowfold.

    2. Michael Field was baptised on 16 February 1766 in Cowfold, as the posthumous son of John and Sarah (as per a transcript of the register).  Michael was mentioned in the will of his Uncle Churchman Field.

      Michael married Sarah Sayers by banns on 14 August 1799 in Slaugham, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor from Bolney and she a spinster of Slaugham.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Lindfield and John Sayers.

      Michael had the following children:

      1. Michael Field was mentioned in the will of his Great Uncle Churchman Field.

      2. John Field was mentioned in the will of his Great Uncle Churchman Field.

    3. John Field was mentioned in the will of his Uncle Churchman Field.

      John had the following child:

      1. John Field was mentioned in the will of his Great Uncle Churchman Field.

    4. James Field was mentioned in the will of his Uncle Churchman Field, at which time he was of Crouchers and Inholm in Bolney.

    5. William Field was mentioned in the will of his Uncle Churchman Field.

    6. Joseph Field was baptised on 28 December 1782 in Cuckfield.
