John FIELD (1825-1906)

and Matilda EDE (1822-1893)

John Field and Matilda Ede married by banns on 19 March 1845 in Bolney Sussex.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.  Their fathers were named as Churchman Field and William Ede.  The witnesses to their marriage were Walter Holman and Sarah Field.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Field was baptised on 8 May 1825 in Bolney, Sussex.  He was the son of Churchman Field (1781-1865) and Sarah Penfold (1788-1849).  The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer.  He most probably died aged 81 years and his death registered in the third quarter of 1906 in the Steyning, Sussex registration district.  In 1841 he was 16 years old and living with his parents at Bolney House in Bolney.

Matilda Ede was baptised on 14 July 1822 in Slaugham, Sussex.  She was the daughter of William Ede (c1782-1832) and Mary Fiest (1788-1839).  She died aged 71 years and was buried on 21 December 1893 at St. Wilfred's in Haywards Heath.  The burial register noted she was from Ashen Ground in Keymer.  When the 1841 census was recorded she was 19 years old and lodging in the home of her brother-in-law William Langley in Slaugham.  Also with her was 7 month old Matilda Ede and 13 year old Walter Ede.  (Little Matilda died aged 2 years and was buried on 14 November 1842 in Slaugham.  She had been baptised on 13 December 1840 in Lower Beeding and was the baseborn daughter of Matilda Ede.)

At the time of the 1851 census the couple and 3 children (John, Ann and Mary A.) were living in Bonnett Cottage in Bolney.  John was a 25 year old agricultural labourer and Metilda was 29.  His place of birth was given as Bolney and she was from Slaugham.

In 1861 the couple and 5 children (Mary A., Emma, Betsy, Friend and Charles) were living in George Cottages in Slaugham.  John was a 36 year old agricultural labourer and Matilda was 39.  His place of birth was given as Bolney and hers as Slaugham.  The next property on the census enumerators route was occupied by the family of 32 year old Walter Field.

When the 1871 census was recorded the couple and 4 children (Emma, Frederick, Charles and Julia) were living in a Cottage in Keymer, Sussex.  John was a 46 year old gamekeeper from Bolney and Matilda was 49 and from Slaugham.

The 1881 census recorded the couple were living at 2 Ashenground Cottage, Keymer.  He was then a 56 year old gardener from Bolney and she was 59 and from Slaugham.  Also with them was 8 year old grandson and scholar, James Clatson.

In 1891 the couple were living in Ashenground, Keymer.  He was a 66 year old domestic servant and gardener and she was 69.  Also with them was their daughter Julia.

By 1901, John was a 76 year old widower and living with his married daughter Emma Knight and her husband at Wiggey Farm Cottage in Reigate, Surrey.  He was then a retired gardener from Bolney.
