Charles FIELD (1860-?)

and Louisa DEAN (1858-1944)

Charles Field and Louisa Dean married in the second quarter of 1881 in the Cuckfield, Sussex registration district.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Charles Field was baptised on 26 February 1860 in Slaugham, Sussex.  He was the son of John Field (1825-1906) and Matilda Ede (1822-1893).  He was a year old at the time of the 1861 census and living with his parent in George Cottages, Slaugham.  (The previous property on the census enumerators route was occupied by the family of 32 year Walter Field.)  In 1871 Charles was 11 years old and living with his parents in Keymer, Sussex.  His place of birth was noted as Slaugham, Sussex.  At the time of the 1881 census Charles was an unmarried 21 year old gardener and living with his brother, Friend Field, at Pondfield Cottage in Ardingly, Sussex.  His place of birth was again given as Slaugham.  Might he have died aged 87 years and his death registered in the fourth quarter of 1947 in the Surrey South Eastern registration district?

Louisa Dean was baptised on 12 December 1858 in Washington, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Isaac Dean (1824-1905) and Dorinda Moore (1827-1920).  She died aged 85 years and her death was registered in the first quarter of 1944 in the Cuckfield registration district.  When the 1861 census was recorded she was 2 years old and living with her parents on Heath Common in Washington, Sussex.  Her place of birth was then given as Washington.  In 1871 she was a 12 year old servant and assistant in a kitchen, and living in the home of Thomas C. Renshaw at Sandrocks in Keymer, Sussex.  Her place of birth was again given as Washington.  (The previous property on the census enumerators route was occupied by 43 year old Walter Field and his family at Holly Farm.)  At the time of the 1881 census she was an unmarried 22 year old and living with her parents at Little Theobalds in Keymer and once more her place of birth was given as Washington.

At the time of the 1891 census the couple and 2 children (Charles G. and Louisa B.) were living in Coachman's Cottage in Westham, Sussex.  Charles was a 31 year old domestic coachman and Louisa was 32.  He gave his place of birth as Slaugham, Sussex and she as Ashington, Sussex.

In 1901 the couple and 4 children (Charles, Winifred, Sidney and Stanley) were living in Milton Road, Haywards Heath.  Charles was a 41 domestic coachman and Louisa was 42.  His place of birth was recorded as Cuckfield and hers as Ashington.

When the 1911 census was recorded the couple and 3 children (Winifred, Sidney and Stanley) were living in 5 rooms in Gower Road, Heathfield, Haywards Heath.  Charles was then a 51 year old domestic gardener and gave his place of birth as Cuckfield, whilst Louisa was 52 and from Ashington.  They said they had been married 30 years and had had 7 children, 5 of whom were living and 2 had died.
