Thomas FAIRS
(c1780-1864)
and Mary HAYBITTLE (1781-1862)

Thomas Fairs and Mary Haybittle
married by licence on 9
February 1819 in West Grinstead, Sussex. The witnesses to their
marriage were Ann Haybittle and John
Summarsell. Their marriage licence was
issued on 30 January 1819 by the Archdeaconry of Chichester, which
recorded that they were both aged 30 years and upwards. He was
a bachelor and farmer of West Grinstead and she a spinster of
Horsham. Surety for the licence was provided by Thomas himself
and Henry Sayers a farmer of West Grinstead.
(They were not my direct ancestors.)
There were no known children from this marriage.
Thomas Fairs may have been born sometime between 1780 and
1785, and according to the census, in West Grinstead, although no possible
baptism has been found there for him. He died aged 82 years and was
buried on 14 March 1864 in West Grinstead.
The West Grinstead baptism register records the following baptisms between
1775-1790:
-
Frances Fairs was baptised on 4 February 1775, the
daughter of Richard
Fairs and Sarah. (Sarah should
probably have been Ann.) Richard and Ann had a
son Thomas Fairs born in 1770 who married
Elizabeth Lindfield in 1795.
-
John Fairs was baptised on 22 June 1777, the son of
Richard Fairs
and Ann.
-
John Fairs was baptised on 21 March 1779, the son of
Charles Fairs
and Sarah. Charles and Sarah don't seem to have
had a son named Thomas and their children were baptised at fairly
regular intervals, although, might they have had a child born in about
the second half of 1780?
-
James Fairs was baptised on 5 April 1781, the son of
Richard Fairs and Ann.
-
Mary Fairs was baptised on 10 November 1782, the
daughter of Charles Fairs and Sarah.
-
Elizabeth Fairs was baptised on 4 July 1784, the
daughter of Elizabeth Fairs. Might she have had
other illegitimate children?
-
Elizabeth Fairs was baptised on 6 January 1785, the
daughter of Charles Fairs and Sarah.
-
Charles Fairs White was baptised on 6 January 1785, the
son of Sarah White.
-
Samuel Fairs was baptised on 19 February 1786, the son
of George Fairs and Elizabeth.
George married Elizabeth Bennett on 28 September 1779
in West Grinstead. The witnesses to their marriage were
William Crow and Richard Stiles.
Did they have any children between 1779 and 1786, and if so,
where? A Sarah Sayres was baptised on 5 March
1781 in West Grinstead to George and Elizabeth, might her surname have
been wrongly recorded? Might Elizabeth have been buried on 30
August 1803 in West Grinstead?
-
Charlotte Fairs was baptised on 7 June 1786, the
daughter of Charles Fairs and Sarah.
-
Ann Fairs was baptised on 25 March 1788, the daughter
of Charles Fairs and Sarah.
-
Susannah Fairs was baptised on 1 October 1790, the
daughter of Charles Fairs and Sarah.
Mary Haybittle was baptised aged 7 months on 30 March 1782 in West Grinstead and was the
daughter of Henry Haybittle (1749-?) and
Mary Botting (c1750-?). (Henry was baptised on 22
October 1749 and was the son of Thomas Haybittle
and Ann.) Mary died aged 80 years and was
buried on 4 September 1862 in West Grinstead.
When the 1851 census was recorded, 70 year old Thomas and 68 year
old Mary were living at Newhouse in West Grinstead. Also with
them on census night were the following: Henry Gates
an unmarried 43 year old servant born in West Grinstead; Walter Clark
unmarried 20 year old nephew born in South Bersted;
Reuben Fairs
unmarried 19 year old servant born in West Grinstead; Henry Fairs 15 year
old servant born in West Grinstead; Susannah Parker unmarried 20 year old
servant born in Nuthurst; and Rebecca Robinson 15 year old servant
born in Billingshurst.
(Note, Henry Fairs was
baptised on 10 January 1836 in West Grinstead, the son of
John Fairs and Eliza
Worsfield.)
(I still have details to add from the 1841 and 1861 census and details of
the poor children taken in.)
