Thomas FAIRS (1770-1844)

and Elizabeth LINDFIELD (c1773-1835)

Thomas Fairs and Elizabeth Lindfield married by banns on 6 October 1795 in Cowfold, Sussex.  They were both then of Cowfold.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Caffyn and Jane Caffyn.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Thomas Fairs was baptised on 16 September 1770 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  He was the son of Richard Fairs (1736-1813) and Ann Peckham.  He died aged 73 years and was buried on 25 February 1844 in West Grinstead.

Elizabeth Lindfield's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She died aged 62 years and was buried on 13 August 1835 in West Grinstead, therefore, born about 1773.  The burial register recorded that she was the wife of Thomas Fairs.

The couple were buried together and their headstone records that she died on 10 August 1835, aged 62, whilst he died aged 73 years on 20 February 1844.  (Details from a transcript of monument inscriptions by the Sussex Family History Group.)

Thomas Fairs and Elizabeth Lindfield had 7 known children and maybe more:

  1. Harry Fairs was baptised on 17 April 1796 in West Grinstead.  Henry Fairs died aged 54 years on 16 July 1850, as per his headstone, and was buried on 20 July 1850 in West Grinstead.

  2. James Fairs was baptised on 12 November 1797 in West Grinstead.

  3. Thomas Fairs was baptised on 20 April 1800 in West Grinstead.  He may have married Mary Roberts in 1824.  (They have their own page.)

  4. John Fairs was baptised on 9 December 1804 in West Grinstead.  He may have died aged 27 years in Henfield and have been buried on 12 November 1833 in West Grinstead.  Or he may have died aged 41 years and have been buried on 11 March 1846 in West Grinstead.

  5. Elizabeth Fairs was baptised on 7 February 1807 in West Grinstead.

  6. She married James Funnell from Broadwater by licence on 20 June 1823 in West Grinstead.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Stone and Peter Page.  Their marriage licence was issued the day before by the Archdeaconry of Chichester which recorded that Elizabeth was 17 years old and of West Grinstead some years.  She married with the consent of her father, Thomas Fairs a labourer of West Grinstead.  James was a 25 year old bachelor of Broadwater near Nuthurst, 2 months.  Surety for the licence was provided by James himself and James Stone a cooper of West Grinstead.

  7. Richard Fairs was baptised on 26 November 1809 in West Grinstead.  He died aged 22 years and was buried on 10 October 1832 in West Grinstead.  His headstone notes that he died on 6 October 1832, aged 22 years and that he was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Fairs.

  8. Lucy Fairs was baptised on 24 July 1814 in West Grinstead, at which time her father was a labourer.
