Richard FAIRS (c1760-?)

and Elizabeth WOOLVIN (1766-?)

Richard Fairs and Elizabeth Woolvin married by banns on 10 April 1788 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Woolven and William Gratwick.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Elizabeth was the niece of my 6x Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Steel.)

Richard Fairs date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  His baptism was not recorded in the West Grinstead or Ashurst parish registers, unless he was baptised on 6 September 1749 in West Grinstead, the son of Richard Fairs and Mary Haybittle?  Or might he have been the son of Richard Fairs and Ann Peckham who married in 1761?

Elizabeth Woolven was baptised on 15 October 1766 in West Grinstead.  She was the daughter of William Woolven and Ann Steel

Richard Fairs and Elizabeth Woolvin had 9 known children:

  1. Richard Fairs was baptised on 2 May 1790 in Cowfold.  He married Elizabeth Brown in 1816.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Ann Fairs was baptised on 12 February 1792 in Cowfold.  She may have married John Batchelor by licence on 12 November 1816 in Brighton.  She was a spinster of Brighton and he a widower of West Grinstead.

  3. Thomas Fairs was baptised on 5 January 1794 in Cowfold, Sussex.  He married Mary Jupp in 1822.  (They have their own page.)

  4. James Fairs was baptised on 20 December 1795 in Cowfold.

  5. John Fairs was baptised on 3 December 1797 in Shermanbury.  He died aged 74 years and was buried on 10 July 1872 in Cowfold.

John married Elizabeth Jupp on 17 April 1827 in Nuthurst, Sussex.  He was then of Cowfold and she of Nuthurst.  (Another John Fairs married Eliza Worsfield on 11 October 1826 in West Grinstead, Sussex.)

Elizabeth was baptised on 15 May 1803 in Nuthurst and was the daughter of Joseph Jupp and Ann Lidbetter.  She died aged 66 years and was buried on 4 May 1868 in Cowfold.

(John's elder brother, married Elizabeth's elder sister.)

John and Elizabeth had the following children:

    1. Ann Fairs was baptised on 16 March 1828 in Cowfold.  She was baptised on the same day as her cousin Eliza Fairs.  She may have died aged 31 years and have been buried on 3 May 1859 in Cowfold.

    2. Mary Fairs was baptised on 11 October 1829 in Cowfold.

    3. Aaron Fairs was baptised on 12 June 1831 in Cowfold.

    4. Peter Fairs was baptised on 9 September 1832 in Cowfold.  He died aged 48 years at the County Asylum and was buried on 25 October 1880 in Cowfold.

    5. Edmund Fairs was baptised on 16 February 1834 in Cowfold.

    6. Walter Fairs was baptised on 30 August 1835 in Cowfold.  Walter married Jane Newman on 9 November 1861 in Cowfold.  He was a bachelor and labourer, and Jane was a spinster.  Their fathers were named as John Faires and William Newman who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were Peter Faires and Caroline Faires.

    7. Rebecca Fairs was baptised on 17 November 1839 in Cowfold.

    8. Caroline Fairs was baptised on 28 November 1841 in Cowfold.  Caroline married James Parsons on 14 May 1864 in Cowfold.  He was a bachelor and labourer and she was a spinster.  Their fathers were named as James Parsons and John Faires who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were Walter Faires and Alfred Sherlock.

    9. Mark Fairs married Rebecka Freeman on 27 April 1867 in Cowfold.  He was a bachelor and labourer and she was a spinster.  Their fathers were named as John Faires and William Freeman and they were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were Peter Faires and Caroline Parsons.

    10. Jesse Faires was baptised on 25 July 1847 in Cowfold.  Jesse married Mary Ann Slaughter on 22 October 1869 in Cowfold.  He was then a 22 year old bachelor and labourer and she was a 21 year old spinster.  Their fathers were named as John Faires and George Slaughter who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Parsons and Caroline Parsons.

  6. Joseph Fairs was baptised on 5 January 1800 in Shermanbury.  He married Philadelphia Richards in 1826.  (They have their own page.)

  7. Jesse Fairs was baptised on 8 April 1804 in Shermanbury.

  8. Elizabeth Fairs was baptised on 23 March 1806 in Shermanbury.

  9. Sarah Fairs was baptised on 15 November 1807 in Shermanbury and buried there on 1 May 1808.

A Richard Fairs had married Ann Hurst by banns on 28 June 1787 in West Grinstead.  Ann may have been buried on 13 September 1787 and Richard on 2 April 1788, both in West Grinstead.  Unless Ann's widower married Elizabeth Woolvin and the Richard who was buried was perhaps the father of a younger Richard?

But, Richard Fairs, bachelor of West Grinstead, married Ann Peckham, spinster of Ashurst, by banns on 28 December 1761 in Ashurst, and it may have been they who were buried in 1787 and 1788.

Previously, another Richard Fairs had married Mary Haybittle on 6 May 1740 in West Grinstead.  Might the elder Richard have been baptised as Richard Fayers on 29 August 1706 in Horsham, Sussex, the son of Thomas Fayers and Sarah, who had married as Thomas Faires and Sarah Wood on 19 July 1705 in West Grinstead?  And might Thomas have been baptised on 18 January 1679 in Albourne, the son of Thomas Faires and Mary Fairehall who had married on 13 April 1676 in Cowfold?
