George FAIRS (1859-1942)

and Ellen LELLIOTT (1860-1937)

George Fairs and Ellen Lelliott married by banns on 8 July 1882 in Steyning, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and coachman from Cuckfield and she was a spinster.  Their fathers were named as David Fairs and Peter Lelliott who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were P. Lelliott and M. Fairs.  (They were not my direct ancestors, although I share distant ancestors with the couple.)

George Fairs was born on 28 February 1858 (should this 1859?) and baptised on 27 March 1859 in Cowfold, Sussex.  He was the son of David Fairs (1826-?) and Ann Woolven (c1831-?).  George died on 23 October 1942 in Perth, Western Australia.  He emigrated to Australia on board the Orsova in 1912 along with the majority of his children.

Ellen Lelliott was baptised on 11 November 1860 in Henfield, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Peter Lelliott (1830-1896) and Mary Ann Woolgar (1833-?).  Ellen died on 3 January 1937 in Perth, Australia.

When the 1891 census was recorded the couple and 2 children were living in North Mundham, Sussex and George was then a 32 year old coachman and Ellen was 30.  George's brother David was living in the previous property on the census enumerators route.  In 1901 the couple and 7 children were living in a cottage in Nutley Street in the parish of Maresfield, Sussex.  George was then a 42 year old coachman and groom and Ellen was 40.

George Fairs and Ellen Lelliott had 10 known children:

1. George Frederick Fairs was born on 18 January 1885 in North Mundham.  He was a 6 year old scholar in 1891.  In 1901 he was a 16 year old nursery labourer/gardener.  George died on 18 January 1972 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.  (He was the only one of his siblings who did not emigrate to Australia.)

   George Frederick married Florence Davis in the third quarter of 1904 in the East Preston registration district.

   Florence was born about 1885.  She died aged 72 years and her death was registered in the second quarter of 1957 in the Tonbridge registration district.

   Fred and Florence had the following children:

   1. Charles Frederick Fairs was born on 22 January 1905.  He died aged 70 years and his death was registered in the fourth quarter of 1975 in the Tonbridge registration district.

   2. Florence Bertha Fairs was born in the first quarter of 1909 and her birth was registered in the Thakeham registration district.

   3. Norman George Fairs was born on 19 May 1916.  He died in October 1998 and his death was registered in the Tunbridge Wells registration district.

2. Annie Ellen Fairs was born in the fourth quarter of 1887 in North Mundham.  She was 3 years old in 1891 and 13 in 1901.

3. Philip Harry Fairs was born and died in the first quarter of 1889 and in the Westhampnett registration district.

4. Alice Rose Fairs was born in the second quarter of 1891 in North Mundham.  She was 9 years old in 1901.

5. Florence Mabel Fairs was born in third quarter of 1893 in North Mundham.  She was 7 years old in 1901.

6. Philip Victor Fairs was born in the third quarter of 1895 in North Mundham.  He was 5 years old in 1901.

7. Eric Charles Fairs was born in the third quarter of 1895 in North Mundham.  The 1901 census records that he was 5 year old Charles E. Fairs.  Eric married Violet Caporn.

8. James Elvey Fairs was born in the fourth quarter of 1897 in North Mundham.  He was 3 years old in 1901.

9. Nellie Kathleen Fairs was born in the first quarter of 1902 in the Uckfield registration district.

10. Millie Winifred Fairs was born in the second quarter of 1905 in the Uckfield registration district.
