John ELSEY (c1620-1673)

and Mary BURTENSHAW (1622-1692)

John Elsey and Mary Burtenshaw were my 9x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by licence on 27 April 1641 in Ardingly, Sussex.  In the marriage licence her name was spelt Mary Burtonshae and in the marriage register as Mary Burtonshoe.

John Elseyís date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He was buried on 18 February 1672/3 in Ardingly, and he was described in the burial register as an ancient married man.

Mary Burtenshaw was baptised on 15 December 1622 in Cuckfield, Sussex.  She was the daughter of 5 256 John Burtenshaw (1578-1653) and 5 256 Mary Wheeler (c1594-1645).  She was buried on 8 May 1692 in Ardingly.  There was also a Mary Burtenshaw baptised on 17 October 1619 in East Grinstead, the daughter of William Burtenshaw and Elizabeth Jewel.

John Elsey and Mary Burtenshaw had 5 known children:

  1. George Elsey, my 8x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 2 October 1642 in Ardingly.  He married Mary Norman in 1675.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Elizabeth Elsey was baptised on 14 February 1646/7 in Ardingly.
