John ELLIOTT (1624-1681)

and Ann BARHAM (1618-1700)

 

John Elliott and Ann Barham were my 9x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 30 April 1646 in Wadhurst, Sussex.

John Elliott was baptised on 6 March 1623/4 in Mayfield, Sussex.  He was the son of 5 276 Alexander Elliott (1584-1660) and 5 276 Constance Hepden (1596-1633).  He was buried on 4 March 1680/1 in Rotherfield, Sussex.  He left a will dated 27 February 1680 in which he appointed his cousin Alexander Ellyott of Mayfield and John Lockeyer of Rotherfield as executors.  He also mentioned his daughters in the following order:  Elizabeth wife of Edward Dodeswell; Anne wife of John Ashdowne; Mary wife of William Gilbert; Ellen and Frances.

Ann Barham was baptised on 5 January 1618/9 in Wadhurst.  She was the daughter of 5 280 Nicholas Barham (c1585-1652) and 5 280 Mary Barham (?-1673).  She was buried on 27 March 1700 in Rotherfield.

 

John Elliott and Ann Barham had 6 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Elliott, my 8x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 4 February 1648/9 in Rotherfield.  She married 5 272 Edward Dodswell in 1677.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Ann Elliott was baptised on 13 November 1650 in Rotherfield.  She was mentioned in her grandfather Nicholas Barham's will of 1652.

    Ann married John Ashdown on 6 April 1672 at St. Michaels in Withyham, Sussex.

    John was baptised on 6 December 1646 at St. Denys in Rotherfield and was the son of John Ashdown (1619-?) and Millicent Moreley.

    John and Ann had 8 known children:

    1. John Ashdown was baptised on 17 May 1674 in Rotherfield.  He may first have married Elizabeth Ovenden on 10 October 1697 in Framfield and then Mary Ovenden on 8 September 1729 in Withyham.

      John and Elizabeth had 2 known children:

      1. Thomas Ashdown was baptised on 28 Febraury 1701/2 in Rotherfield.

      2. John Ashdown was baptised on 18 June 1704 in Rotherfield.  He may have died young or he (or his father) may have married Mary Ovenden in 1729.

      John and Mary had 1 known son:

      1. John Ashdown was baptised on 28 May 1734 in Rotherfield.  He was buried on 19 January 1809 at St. Michael's in Withyham.

        John married Elizabeth Richardson on 25 October 1758 at the parish church of St. Denys in Rotherfield.

        John and Elizabeth had the following children:

        1. Elizabeth Ashdown was baptised on 26 December 1759 in Rotherfield.  She married Robert Pawley on 18 January 1785 in Withyham.  They had 5 known children.

        2. Thomas Ashdown was baptised on 25 February 1761 in Rotherfield and buried there on 29 March 1761.

        3. John Ashdown was baptised on 1 August 1762 in Rotherfield and was buried there on 12 November 1762.

        4. Hannah Ashdown was bapitsed on 8 November 1763 in Rotherfield.  Before her marriage she had an illegitimate son:

          1. Thomas Ashdown was baptised on 26 February 1786 in Rotherfield.  Thomas married Elizabeth Waters on 14 March 1809 in Withyham.  She was baptised on 10 March 1789 in Withyham and was the daughter of Stephen Waters and Elizabeth White.

          Hannah married John Coats on 24 December 1789 in Withyham.

        5. Ann Ashdown was baptised on 18 March 1766 in Withyham.  She married George Holmes on 11 November 1785 in Hartfield, Sussex.  They had 2 known children.

        6. Sarah Ashdown was baptised on 18 May 1768 in Withyham.

        7. Philadelphia Ashdown was baptised on 22 January 1770 in Withyham.

        8. Mary Ashdown was baptised on 7 November 1771 in Withyham.

        9. Sophia Ashdown was baptised on 8 May 1778 in Withyham and buried there on 13 January 1810.

    2. Alexander Ashdown was baptised on 28 May 1676 in Rotherfield.  He married Elizabeth Piper on 19 June 1701 in Brede, Sussex.  The couple had at least 3 known children.

    3. Thomas Ashdown was baptised on 15 April 1678 in Rotherfield.

    4. Anne Ashdown was baptised on 28 October 1680 in Rotherfield.

    5. Nicholas Ashdown was baptised on 19 July 1685 in Rotherfield.  He married Mary Hart on 12 October 1714 in Pett, Sussex.  The couple had 5 known children.

    6. William Ashdown was baptised on 17 April 1687 in Rotherfield.

    7. Edward Ashdown was baptised on 19 January 1688/9 in Rotherfield.

    8. James Ashdown was baptised on 21 December 1694 in Mayfield.

  3. Constance Elliott was baptised on 8 August 1652 in Rotherfield.  She was mentioned in the will of her grandfather Nicholas Barham.

    As a spinster of Mayfield she married John Wood of Burwash by licence on 15 August 1674 in Mayfield.  Strangely their marriage licence was dated 8 October 1674.

    John may have been baptised on 9 October 1642 the son of John Wood and Susan Johnson, or, on 19 February 1642/3 the son of James Wood and Elizabeth.  Both baptisms took place in Burwash.

    John and Constance had 6 known children:

    1. Susan Wood was born about 1675.

    2. Mary Wood was baptised on 15 May 1677 in Burwash.

    3. John Wood was baptised on 23 January 1679/80 in Burwash.

    4. Michael Wood was baptised on 3 May 1681 in Burwash.

    5. Alexander Wood was baptised on 3 March 1681/2 in Burwash.

    6. Constance Wood was baptised in February 1683 in Burwash.

  4. Mary Elliott was baptised on 26 November 1654 in Rotherfield.  She married William Gilbert, and they had 6 known children.

  5. Eleanor Elliott was baptised on 25 October 1656 in Rotherfield.  She married Richard Golden on 10 October 1681 or 1686 in Rotherfield.

  6. Frances Elliottís date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She married Thomas Ovenden by licence on 10 June 1684 in Lewes, Sussex.  Thomas was then of Tunbridge in Kent and Frances a spinster of Rotherfield.  The sponsor to the licence was William Read an innholder in Lewes.  They had 1 known daughter.
