William EASTWOOD (1714-1788)

and Ann MONK (1719-?)

 

William Eastwood and Ann Monk married on 10 June 1739 in Burwash, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Ann was the sister of my 6x Great Grandmother, Frances Monk.)

William Eastwood was baptised in May 1714 in Mayfield, Sussex.  He was the son of John Eastwood (c1679-1744) and Ann Piper (?-1760).  William was buried on 18 February 1788 in Burwash.  (His mother may have been baptised on 26 July 1676 in Mayfield, Sussex and have been the daughter of Richard Piper and Ann - thanks to her descendant, John Eastwood, for passing on this data.)

Ann Monk was baptised on 5 July 1719 in Etchingham, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Henry Monk (1682-1759) and Sarah Collins (c1685-1767).  She was mentioned in her father’s will as the wife of William Isted,  although it is believed that he was William Eastwood.

 

William Eastwood and Ann Monk had 16 known children:

  1. Sarah Eastwood was baptised on 10 April 1740 in Burwash.  She married Joseph Barrow in 1764.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Ann Eastwood was baptised on 2 June 1742 in Burwash.  She may have married Thomas Forde on 17 January 1769 in Burwash.

  3. William Eastwood was baptised on 4 September 1743 in Burwash.

    William married Elizabeth Blunden on 24 September 1775 in Burwash.

    Elizabeth was baptised on 1 January 1750/1 in Burwash and was the daughter of Thomas Blunden (1726-1799) and Mary Inskipp (1725-1799).  Elizabeth was buried on 9 February 1821 in Burwash.

    William and Elizabeth had the following child:

    1. Elizabeth Eastwood was baptised on 4 December 1775 in Burwash.

    2. William Eastwood was baptised on 30 June 1782 in Burwash, the same day as his cousin Sarah Eastwood.  At the time of his baptism, his parents were of Shoyswell.

  4. Henry Eastwood was baptised on 14 April 1745 in Burwash.

    Henry married twice.  Firstly to Susanna Wood by licence on 20 April 1772 in Brightling.  He was then of Burwash.

    As a widower Henry married Elizabeth Morris on 10 August 1779 in Burwash.

    Henry and Susanna had the following children:

    1. Susannah Eastwood was baptised on 12 January 1773 in Burwash.

    2. Henry Eastwood was baptised on 12 January 1773 in Burwash.

    3. Stephen Eastwood was baptised on 4 April 1774 in Burwash.  His father's named was recorded as Harry Eastwood in the baptism register.

    4. Henry Eastwood was baptised on 5 May 1776 in Burwash.

      Henry married Mary Parker by banns on 29 July 1798 in Ticehurst.  He was then of Burwash and she of Ticehurst.  The witnesses to their marriage were his father Henry Monk and James Brockhurst.

      Henry and Mary had the following son:

      1. William Eastwood was born on 25 October 1803 and baptised on 22 January 1804 in Ninfield.

        William married Ann Ingerfield, from Kent, and they had the following son:

        1. William Eastwood married Eliza Ann Driver, from Surrey, and they had the following son:

          1. Charles William Eastwood married Harriet Emily Pipe, from Suffolk.

            Many thanks to John Eastwood for the line of descent from Henry and Mary.

      2. Mary Eastwood was born on 12 August 1805 and baptised on 20 October 1805 in Ninfield.

      3. Edmund Eastwood was born on 9 July 1808 and baptised on 14 August 1808 in Ninfield.  Edmund married Elizabeth.  Elizabeth was born about 1808 in Goudhurst, Kent.  When the 1851 census was recorded the couple and 7 children were living at Chessons in Ticehurst.  Edmund was then said to be a 41 year old agricultural labourer and Elizabeth was 43.  Also with them on census night was 3 year old visitor George Eves.  Edmund and Elizabeth had the following children:

        1. Edmund Eastwood was born about 1833 in Goudhurst.  He was an 18 year old farm labourer in 1851.

        2. Elizabeth Eastwood was baptised on 2 November 1834 in Ticehurst.  She was 16 years old in 1851.

        3. Samuel Eastwood was baptised on 8 January 1837 in Ticehurst.  In 1851 he was a 12 year old scholar.

        4. Alfred Eastwood was born about 1839 in Ticehurst.  In 1851 he was a 9 year old scholar.

        5. Eliza Eastwood was born about 1842 in Ticehurst.  She was a 9 year old scholar in 1851.

        6. James Eastwood was born about 1844 in Ticehurst.  In 1851 he was a 7 year old scholar.

        7. Caroline Eastwood was born in 1850 in Ticehurst.  At the time of the 1851 census she was 7 months old.

    5. Samuel Eastwood was baptised on 24 March 1779 in Burwash.

  5. Thomas Eastwood was baptised on 13 October 1747 in Burwash and buried there on 13 October 1747.

  6. Edward Eastwood was baptised on 23 July 1748 in Burwash.

  7. Stephen Eastwood was baptised on 25 January 1749/50 in Burwash.

    He may have married Ann Langridge on 26 March 1780 in Burwash.

    Stephen and Ann had the following children:

    1. Elizabeth Eastwood was baptised on 17 May 1780 in Burwash.

    2. Ann Eastwood was baptised on 31 August 1783 in Burwash.  The baptism register noted that her parents were from Etchingham.

    3. Stephen Eastwood was baptised on 5 October 1788 in Burwash.

  8. Elizabeth Eastwood was baptised on 11 May 1751 in Burwash.

  9. Mary Eastwood was baptised on 4 August 1753 in Burwash.  She may have married Thomas Waterhouse on 5 May 1776 in Burwash.  Mary had an illegitimate daughter:

    1. Lucy Eastwood was baptised on 12 May 1774 in Burwash.

  10. James Eastwood was baptised on 1 September 1755 in Burwash.

    He may have married Mary Blunden on 16 October 1779 in Burwash.

    James and Mary had the following children:

    1. Sophia Eastwood was baptised on 27 July 1780 in Burwash.

    2. James Eastwood was baptised on 12 May 1782 in Burwash.

    3. Hannah Eastwood was baptised on 15 June 1783 in Burwash.

    4. Harriot Eastwood was baptised on 15 January 1786 in Burwash.

  11. Hannah Eastwood was baptised on 25 February 1757 in Burwash.  She was buried there on 2 December 1789.

    Hannah married Thomas Pilbeam on 8 June 1780 in Burwash.

    Thomas was baptised on 18 June 1756 in Burwash and was the son of Stephen Pilbeam (1720-1782) and Sarah Rowland (1721-1808).  Thomas was buried on 17 October 1822.

    Thomas and Hannah had 5 known children:

    1. Thomas Pilbeam was baptised on 7 May 1781 in Burwash.

    2. Hannah Pilbeam was baptised on 4 November 1782 in Burwash.

    3. George Pilbeam was baptised on 10 November 1784 in Burwash.

    4. Sarah Pilbeam was baptised on 17 December 1786 in Burwash.

    5. James Pilbeam was baptised on 9 August 1789 in Burwash.  He was buried on 13 April 1850 in Burwash.

      James married Bridget Reeves on 11 October 1810 in Burwash.

      James and Bridget had 11 known children:

      1. James Pilbeam was baptised on 21 December 1810 in Burwash.  He married Eliza.

      2. Thomas Pilbeam was baptised on 22 March 1812 in Burwash and buried there on 9 April 1812.

      3. William Pilbeam was baptised on 17 September 1813 in Burwash.  He was buried there on 25 January 1887.  William married Mary Leany by banns on 22 May 1835 in Burwash.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Burwash.

      4. Henry Thomas Pilbeam was baptised on 8 January 1815 in Burwash.  He died in 1887.  Henry married Hannah Waghorn on 25 November 1837 in Goudhurst, Kent.

      5. Mary Ann Pilbeam was baptised on 26 May 1816 in Burwash.  Mary married Thomas Edwards by banns on 9 December 1834 in Etchingham, Sussex.  She was then a spinster of Burwash and he a bachelor of Etchingham.

      6. Levi Pilbeam was baptised on 22 February 1818 in Burwash.  Levi married Eliza Mepham by banns on 21 January 1837 in Frant, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Frant.

      7. Hannah Pilbeam was baptised on 8 July 1819 in Burwash.  Hannah married George Eastwood Holmes on 2 January 1843 in Burwash.

      8. Harriet Pilbeam was baptised on 19 June 1821 in Burwash.  Harriet married Reuben Russell on 14 November 1844 in Southwick, Sussex.  Before their marriage they had an illegitimate daughter, Bridget Russell Pilbeam, baptised on 2 October 1842 in Burwash.

      9. Edmond Pilbeam was baptised on 29 June 1823 in Burwash.  He died on 19 April 1873 in Oriskany Falls, New York, USA.  Edmund married Hannah Vidler on 24 March 1844 in Ticehurst.  Hannah was born on 4 April 1819 and baptised on 28 May 1820 in Ticehurst and was the daughter of Thomas Vidler.  She died on 15 September 1858 in Bodiam, Sussex and was buried on 17 September 1850.

      10. George Pilbeam was baptised on 25 December 1824 in Burwash.  He died on 4 July 1878 in Hawkhurst, Kent.  George married Philadelphia Lockyer.

      11. Ambrose Pilbeam was baptised on 9 May 1830 in Burwash.

  12. Robert Eastwood was baptised on 23 June 1758 in Burwash.

  13. Samuel Eastwood was baptised on 8 March 1760 in Burwash.  He married Sarah Thompson in 1782.  (They have their own page.)

  14. George Eastwood was baptised on 7 February 1762 in Burwash.

    George have married Elizabeth Tindall on 10 December 1790 in Burwash.

    George and Elizabeth had the following children:

    1. Anne Eastwood was baptised on 6 February 1791 in Burwash.

    2. Mary Eastwood was baptised on 10 July 1792 in Burwash.

    3. Stephen Eastwood was baptised on 23 March 1794 in Burwash.

      Stephen may have married Elizabeth Hyland by banns on 16 February 1821 in Etchingham, Sussex.  They were both then of Etchingham.  However, he did have a cousin named Stephen Eastwood who was born in 1795.

      When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and 7 children were living at Miskins in Etchingham.

      Stephen and Elizabeth had the following children:

      1. Mary Ann Eastwood was baptised on 12 August 1821 in Etchingham.

      2. Stephen Eastwood was baptised on 16 November 1823 in Etchingham.  He was 15 years old in 1841.

      3. Alfred Eastwood was baptised on 15 October 1826 in Frant, Sussex.  He was 14 years old in 1841.  Alfred married Sarah.  She was born about 1830 in Burwash.  The couple were living in Ticehurst in 1851 along with his younger sister, Charlotte.  Alfred was then an agricultural labourer.

      4. Henry Eastwood was baptised on 10 December 1828 in Frant.  He was 11 years old in 1841.

      5. Louisa Eastwood was baptised on 7 March 1831 in Salehurst.  She was 9 years old in 1841.

      6. Harriet Eastwood was baptised on 6 December 1836 in Etchingham.  She was 5 years old in 1841.

      7. Ann Eastwood was baptised on 11 April 1841 in Etchingham.  She was 3 years old in 1841.

      8. Charlotte Eastwood was baptised on 11 April 1841 in Etchingham.  She was 3 months old in 1841.  In 1851 she was a 10 year old scholar living with her elder brother Alfred and his wife.

    4. Thomas Eastwood was baptised on 13 December 1795 in Burwash.

    5. John Eastwood was baptised on 20 December 1798 in Burwash.

    6. Henry Eastwood was baptised on 16 November 1800 in Burwash.

      Henry may have married Ruth Rummery on 17 December 1821 in Burwash.  Or he may have married Frances Leaney by banns on 4 June 1826 in Ticehurst, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were Benjamin Leaney and Philadelphia Harmer.  (See below for the families of the 2 couples.)

    7. Elizabeth Eastwood was baptised on 29 May 1803 in Burwash.

  15. Lucy Eastwood was baptised on 23 February 1763 in Burwash.

  16. Joseph Eastwood was baptised on 25 March 1764 in Burwash.

 

 

Henry Eastwood and Ruth Rummery married on 17 December 1821 in Burwash.

Henry was born about 1802 in Burwash (as per the 1851 census).

Ruth was born about 1804 in Heathfield, Sussex.

At the time of the 1841 census the couple together with 6 children and 30 year old Elizabeth Eastwood were living on Road side in Burwash.  Henry and Ruth were both said to be 35 years old and he was an agricultural labourer.  In 1851 the family were living "on Town Gate" in Burwash.

Henry and Ruth had the following known children:

  1. George Eastwood was baptised on 30 September 1824 in Burwash.

  2. Henry Eastwood was baptised on 27 October 1825 in Burwash.  He was 15 years old in 1841 and in 1851 he was an unmarred 25 year old agricultural labourer living at home with his parents.

  3. James Eastwood was baptised on 21 April 1828 in Burwash.  He was 13 years old in 1841.

  4. Mary Anne Eastwood was baptised on 17 April 1831 in Burwash.  The 1841 census records that she was 10 year old Mary Eastwood.

  5. Thomas Eastwood was baptised on 30 June 1833 in Burwash.  He was 7 years old in 1841.  In 1851 he was a 17 year old agricultural labourer living at home.

  6. Ruth Eastwood was baptised on 10 July 1836 in Burwash.  At the time of the 1841 census she was 5 years old.  In 1851 she was 15 years old.

  7. Harriet Eastwood was baptised on 14 June 1840 in Burwash.  She was a year old when the 1841 census was recorded.  In 1851 she was a 10 year old scholar.

  8. John Eastwood was baptised on 22 June 1845 in Burwash.  He was 5 years old in 1851.

 

Henry Eastwood and Frances Leaney married by banns on 4 June 1826 in Ticehurst, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were Benjamin Leaney and Philadelphia Harmer.

Frances died in 1838.

When the 1841 census was recorded 40 year old Henry and his 5 children were living at Miskins in Etchingham.  He was then an agricultural labourer.

Henry and Frances had the following known children:

  1. Sarah Eastwood was born about 1826/7.  She was 15 years old in 1841.

  2. Coele Eastwood was baptised on 10 February 1828 in Ticehurst.  The 1841 census records that she was 12 year old Celia Eastwood.  She married William Grey in the second quarter of 1858 in the Newington registration district.

  3. Harriet Eastwood was baptised on 31 October 1830 in Ticehurst.  She was 10 years old in 1841.

  4. Elizabeth Ellen Eastwood was baptised on 14 April 1833 in Etchingham, Sussex.  The 1841 census records that she was 8 year old Ellen Eastwood.

  5. Hezekiah Eastwood was baptised on 25 October 1835 in Ticehurst.  He was 6 years old in 1841.
