John DUPLOCK (c1774-?)
and Ann (c1780-1859)

John Duplock
and Ann may have married sometime before or about 1802. They
may have married as John Diplock and Ann Gladman on 27 March
1799 in West Firle, Sussex, or as John Duplock and Ann Heasman
on 13 August 1797 in Rotherfield, Sussex, at which time he was a widower and
she a widow. John may have previously married Ann Arnal on 19
May 1786 and/or Ann Midnor on 9 May 1787, both marriages took place
in Rotherfield and at each marriage John was a widower. (They
were not my direct ancestors.)
John Duplock's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.
He may have died aged 63 years on 27 August 1837 in Mayfield, Sussex and
have been buried there on 30 August 1837, therefore, born about 1774.
His name was recorded as John Duplock in the burial register.
A John Diplock was baptised on 27 March 1774 in Southover, Sussex
(near Lewes), the son of William Diplock and Ann Willard.
The East Sussex baptism index also records that a John Dyplock was
baptised in 1764 in Fletching. Another John Duplock on 31 March
1777 in Mayfield, the son of Joseph Duplock (1746-1830) and Ann
Hope (?-1840) and a John Diplock was baptised on 25 December 1783
in Rotherfield, the son of John Diplock and Lucy.
Ann's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.
Ann Duplock died aged 79 years and was buried on 9 March 1859 in
Mayfield. When the 1841 census was recorded Ann was living in the High
Street, Mayfield and she was described in the census as a 55 year old widow.
Also with her on census night were 14 year old Eliza Duplock, 55 year
old William Millen who was a letter carrier and 15 year old
Harriet Tomson who was a servant. The 1851 census records that she
was 72 years old in receipt of parish relief and that she had been born in
Mayfield. She was then living with the family of her son Richard in
Colkin Mill Street, Mayfield. An Anne Gladman was baptised on 8
October 1780 in Laughton, Sussex, the daughter of George Gladman and
Ruth Dollidge.
John Duplock and Ann had
11 known children:

Peter
Duplock was baptised on 7 February 1803 in Mayfield. He died
aged 28 years and was buried on 12 August 1831 in Mayfield. The
Mayfield burial register records that he was Peter Duplock of
Barcombe.

Fanny Duplock
was baptised on 10 February 1805 in Rotherfield, Sussex. Did she
marry Robert Cornford on 12 October 1830 in Mayfield?

Richard Duplock was baptised on 16
August 1807 in Mayfield. He died age 52 years and was buried on 23
October 1859 in Mayfield.
Richard married
Elizabeth Young by banns on 18 September 1830 in South Malling,
Sussex. The witnesses to their marriage were Martha Ede and
Samuel Smith.
Elizabeth was
born about 1808 in Brenchley or Pembury, Kent. She died aged 70
years and was buried on 8 August 1878 in Mayfield. When the 1861
census was recorded she was a 53 year old widow and living at 4 Colkins
Mill. She was then a draper and grocer and the head of her household
of 16 year old son Richard and 13 year old niece Mercy Duplock.
In 1871 she was a 63 year old grocer and living in Coggins Mill Street in
Mayfield along with her 9 year old grandson, Richard Duplock.
When the 1841
census was recorded, Richard and Elizabeth were living at Rolfs in
Mayfield along with 3 children and Richard's younger, Mark. In 1851
the couple together with 3 sons and Richard's mother were living in
Colkins Mill. Richard was then a 43 year old agricultural labourer.
Richard and
Elizabeth had 6 known children:

Amos Duplock
was born about 1831. He died aged 14 years and was buried on 15
May 1845 in Mayfield. The 1841 census records that he was 10 years
old.

Peter
Duplock was baptised on 3 August 1834 in Mayfield. He died
aged 55 years and his death was registered in the second quarter of 1890
in the Wandsworth registration district. He was 6 years old in
1841. In 1851 he was a 16 year old agricultural labourer living at
home with his parents and younger brothers.
Peter married
Philadelphia. She was born about 1838/9 in Mayfield and
died in 1893.
When the 1881
census was recorded the couple were living at 636 Wandsworth Road,
Clapham, Surrey. Peter was then a 43 year old builder employing 5
men and 1 boy. Also with the couple on census night was a 14 year
old visitor, Elizabeth Sinnett was a scholar who had been born in
St. Pancras, Middlesex.

Ellinor
Duplock was baptised on 12 February 1837 in Mayfield, at which time
her father was a labourer of Wallis in Mayfield. She died aged 11
months and was buried on 28 December 1837 in Mayfield. The burial
register recorded her name as Elenor Duplock.

David Duplock was baptised on 8
September 1839 in Mayfield, at which time his father was a labourer of
Argos Hill in Mayfield. At the time of the 1841 census he was a
year old. He was 11 years old when the 1851 census was recorded.
David married
Sarah Weeks on 30 March 1861 in Mayfield.
Sarah was
baptised on 20 December 1840 in Mayfield and was the daughter of
Reuben
Weeks (1817-1890) and
Ann
Midmore (c1817-?).

Ellen
Duplock was baptised on 7 August 1842 in Mayfield, at which time her
father was a labourer of Roffs in Mayfield. She died aged 2 years
and was buried on 4 July 1844 in Mayfield. The burial register
recorded that the family were then of Wind Mill Cottage in Mayfield.

Richard
Duplock was born on 25 December 1844 and baptised on 26 January 1845
in Mayfield, at which time his father was a labourer of Third Mile
Cottage in Mayfield (or it might have been Mud Mile Cottage). In
1851 he was 6 years old.

was born on 5 May 1809 and baptised on 4 June 1809 in Rotherfield.

Duplock was born on 7 February 1812 and baptised on 5 July 1812 in
Rotherfield. He died before 1881. The 1841 census records that
he was a 25 year old agricultural labourer living in the home of
William Taylor at Sharnden, Mayfield.
Charles married
Eliza Goldsmith on 6 October 1851 in Rotherfield.
Eliza was born
about 1830 in Rotherfield and was the daughter of James Goldsmith
(c1785-1860) and Jane Brown (c1789-?). She died at Colkins
Mill on 3 May 1883.

Duplock was born on 28 February 1854 in Mayfield. She died on
15 April 1939 in Kemsing, Kent.
Ellen married
Thomas Medhurst on 17 April 1875 in Mayfield. He was then
24 years old and she 22. Their father were named as Edward
Medhurst and Charles Duplock.

Duplock was born about 1861 in Mayfield.

George Duplock
was baptised on 5 February 1815 in Mayfield, at which time his father was
a labourer of Rotherfield. He died aged 10 years and was buried on
24 May 1826 in Mayfield. (Note, need to double check burial
register, as he should have been 11 years old.)

Hannah Duplock
was baptised on the same day as her brother George. She died aged 16
years and was buried on 3 November 1831 in Mayfield.

David Duplock
was baptised on 9 August 1817 in Rotherfield. He died aged 86 years
and his death was registered in the second quarter of 1905 in the Uckfield
registration district as David Diplock. In 1881 David
was a 63 year old widower and living at Peeps Cottage in Gravel Hill,
Mayfield, along with his daughter Elizabeth. He was a 73 year old
widower in 1891 and living with his daughter Eliza.
David married
twice, firstly to Sarah Wicker on 10 April 1842 in Mayfield.
David was then of full age and a bachelor and labourer of Crouch.
Sarah was a 20 year old spinster and servant of Alms House. They
both made their X marks in the marriage register. Their fathers were
named as John Duplock and Thomas Wicker who were both
labourers. The witnesses to their marriage were Michael Mitten
who signed his name and Ann Wicker who made her mark.
Sarah died aged
28 years and was buried on 5 June 1850 in Mayfield.
When the 1851
census was recorded David was a 34 year old widower and agricultural
labourer, lodging with his 2 children at Colkins Mill in the home of
Richard Gess.
David and Sarah
had 4 known children:

Walter
Duplock was baptised on 20 July 1843 in Mayfield, at which time his
father was a labourer of Colkins Mill, Mayfield. He died aged 4
months and was buried on 22 October 1843 in Mayfield.

John Duplock
was baptised on 16 February 1845 in Mayfield, at which time his father
was a labourer of Colkens Mill in Mayfield. He was 6 years old in
1851. In 1861 he was a 17 year old carter boy living at home with
his father and step mother. When the 1871 census was recorded he
was a 25 year old agricultural labourer living at Coggins Mill in the
home of William Eaton.
John married
Philadelphia Parker on 1 September 1872 in Mayfield. He was
then 27 years old and she was 21. Their fathers were named as
David Duplock and Henry Parker.
Philadelphia
was born about 1852 in Rotherfield.
When the 1881
census was recorded the couple and 5 children were living at Trowshatch
in Mayfield and John was a 37 year old labourer. Also with them on
census night was a 38 year old unmarried boarder, Will Sharp.

Duplock was born about 1873 in Mayfield. She was an 8 year
old scholar in 1881.

Duplock was born about 1875 in Mayfield. He was a 6 year old
scholar in 1881.

Duplock was born about 1877 in Mayfield. In 1881 she was 4
years old.

Philadelphia A Duplock was born about 1879 in Mayfield. In
1881 she was 2 years old.

Rhoda
Duplock was born in 1881 in Mayfield. At the time of the
1881 census she was 2 months old.

Mercy
Duplock was privately baptised on 18 March 1848 in Mayfield.
At the time of her baptism her father was a labourer of Mayfield.
In 1851 she was 3 years old. When the 1861 census was recorded she
was a 13 year old servant living in the home of her Aunt Elizabeth
Duplock.
As Mercy
Duplock she married Benjamin David Austain (or Daniel) on 25
December 1867 in Mayfield. Their fathers were named as David
Duplock and Benjamin Austain. Mercy was then said to be
20 years old.

Thomas
Duplock was born about 1850 in Mayfield. He was an 11 year old
scholar in 1861 living at home.
David next
married Rhoda Weston on 27 July 1851 in Mayfield. Their
fathers were then named as John Duplock and John Weston.
Rhoda may have
been baptised on 25 February 1827 in Mayfield and have been the daughter
of John Weston and Sarah. She died aged 55 years and
was buried on 26 September 1878 in Mayfield.
At the time of
the 1861 census, David, Rhoda and 6 children were living at Mousehall in
Mayfield. David was then an agricultural labourer. In 1871 the
couple and 4 daughters were living at Mark Cross, Mayfield. David
was then a 54 year old gamekeeper.
David and Eliza
had 6 known children:

Eliza
Duplock was baptised on 1 November 1851 in Mayfield. She was a
9 year old scholar in 1861. When the 1891 census was recorded she
was a 39 year old widow living at the Brewers Arms in Mayfield where she
was a beer and lodging house keeper. Also with her on census night
were her 3 sons, father and sister Elizabeth Palmer, and 18
lodgers.
Eliza married
Samuel Medhurst on 8 November 1871 in Mayfield. Samuel was
then 30 years old and Eliza 21. Their fathers were named as
Samuel Medhurst and David Duplock.

Medhurst was born about 1884 in Rotherfield. He was a 7 year
old scholar in 1891.

Medhurst was born about 1885 in Rotherfield. He was a 6 year
old scholar in 1891.

Medhurst was born in 1891 in Mayfield. When the 1891 census
was recorded he was 6 days old.

Harriet
Duplock was baptised on 4 September 1853 in Mayfield. She was
a 7 year old scholar in 1861. In 1871 she was 19 years old.

Duplock was baptised on 2 March 1856 in Mayfield. He died aged
6 months and was buried on 9 April 1856 in Mayfield.

Sarah
Duplock was born about 1859 in Mayfield. At the time of the
1861 census she was a year old. In 1871 she was an 11 year old
scholar.

Mary Duplock
was born about 1861-4 in Mayfield. She was a 7 year old scholar in
1871. She married Charles Holden on 24 December 1879 in
Mayfield. He was then 20 years old and she was 18.

Elizabeth
Duplock was baptised on 2 June 1867 in Mayfield. When the 1871
census was recorded she was a 3 year old scholar. She was a 13
year old scholar in 1881 and living with her father. In 1891 she
was living with her sister Eliza. She was then said to be 25 year
old married Elizabeth Palmer, a monthly nurse. Her husband
was note with her at the time.

Mark Duplock
was born on 3 February 1820 and baptised on 12 March 1820 in Rotherfield.
He died aged 45 years and was buried on 17 March 1865 in Mayfield.
When the 1841 census was recorded he was an agricultural labourer and
living the family of his brother Richard at Rolfs in Mayfield.

Matthew
Duplock was born 3 February 1820 and baptised on 12 March 1820 in
Rotherfield. He died aged 23 years and was buried on 27 March 1842
in Mayfield.

Eliza Duplock
was baptised on 15 April 1827 in Mayfield and the baptism register records
that she was the daughter of John and Ann. She was 14 years old in
1841.
As a 16 year old
she may have married George Saunders on 2 October 1842 in Mayfield.
Their fathers were named as John Duplock and Samuel Saunders.
