Family History is my hobby.  I am not a professional genealogist.

John DOFFELL (c1640-1705)

and Joan ASHDOWN (c1645-1697)

John Duffell and Joan Ashdoun were my 9x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 16 October 1666 at the parish church of St. Margarets in Isfield, Sussex.  They were both then described as being of Isfield. 5 363

John Duffell’s date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He may have been baptised on 27 July 1645 in Worth as the son of George Duffield (1620-?) and Mary, but, there were also Duffield’s in Brighton.  John was probably buried on 9 November 1705 in Isfield, but the register just records a name and no further details.  I have not found a will for John. 5 223

Joan Ashdown’s date and place of birth are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 7 May 1697 in Isfield and the entry in the burial register records that “Joan wife of John Doefield was buried”.

Although John and Jane were married and buried in Isfield, neither seem to have been baptised there.

John Duffell and Jone had 3 known children:

  1. George Douffall, my 8x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 12 March 1666/7 in Isfield, as George Douffall.  He married 5 307 Jane Whitney on 12 Febuary 1693/4 at St. Thomas, Lewes, Sussex.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Jane Doffelld was baptised on 13 December 1668 in Isfield.  She married William Whitney on 30 December 1694 in Little Horsted.  (William's sister married Jane's brother.)

  3. Mary Doffell was baptised on 3 January 1674/5 in Isfield.  She married William Hartfield on 19 June 1697 in Framfield, Sussex.

Isfield is a non-IGI’d parish as are the surrounding parishes of Little Horsted and Uckfield where I have yet to look for any Duffield events.  I also need to check Maresfield, Newick, Chailey and Lindfield.

Thomas Douffoull and Alice had the following child:

  1. Mary Douffoull was baptised on 3 May 1640 in Isfield.
