George DUFFIELD (1667-1746)

and Jane WHITNEY (1671-1757)

George Duffill and Jane Whitney were my 8x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 12 February 1693/4 at St. Thomas, Lewes, Sussex.

George Douffall was baptised on 12 March 1666/7 in Isfield, Sussex.  He was the son of 5 363 John Doffell (c1640-1705) and 5 363 Joan Ashdown (c1645-1697).  He may have been buried as “Old Goodman Duffield” on 20 November 1746 in Isfield. 5 223

Jane Whitney was baptised on 29 March 1671 in Ringmer, Sussex.  She was the daughter of 5 308 John Whitney (c1640-?) and 5 308 Thomason.  She was buried on 31 July 1757 in Isfield as Jane Duffil.  Before her marriage to George, she had an illegitimate daughter.

Unknown and Jane Whitney had 1 known daughter:

  1. Elizabeth Whitney was baptised on 4 December 1691 in Isfield, although mother and daughter were of Ringmer.

George Duffield and Jane Whitney had 8 known children: 5 202

  1. Tabitha Doefield was born on 1 May and baptised on 14 May 1695 in Isfield.

  2. Mary Doefield was born on 26 February and baptised on 7 March 1696/7 in Isfield.

  3. John Doefield was born on 10 March and baptised on 25 March 1699 in Isfield.  He may have been buried on 9 November 1705 in Isfield but the burial register just records that a Jno Doffield was buried, so this burial may refer to his Grandfather or an Uncle.

  4. George Doefield was born on 15 April and baptised on 25 April 1701 in Isfield.  He was buried on 6 December 1772 in Isfield.

George married Margaret.  The Sussex Family History Groups's marriage index records that a George Duffield and Mary Cretolder were married on 20 October 1724 in the Fleet Prison, London.  George was said to be of Isbet(?), Sussex and Mary of Ringmer, Sussex.

Margaret was buried on 29 January 1769 in Isfield.

George and Margaret had 2 known children:

    1. John Doefield was baptised on 5 February 1725/6 in Isfield.

    2. Sarah Doefield was baptised on 27 December 1729 in Isfield.

  5. Jane Doefield was born on 26 March and baptised on 29 March 1703 in Isfield.  A Jane Duffield of Brighthelmstone married William Gorringe of St. Michael’s, Lewes, on 18 April 1731 in Isfield.  I’m not sure if the marriage was for 1703 Jane, as there were also Duffield families in Brighton at this time.

  6. Elizabeth Doefield, my 7x Great Grandmother, was born on 28 April and baptised on 8 May 1707 in Isfield.  She married 5 227 Thomas Thorpe in 1731.  (They have their own page.)

  7. Henry Duffield was baptised on 3 December 1711 in Isfield.  A Henry Duffield was buried on 28 December 1782 in Ringmer.

As Henry Durfield he married Sarah Davies on 26 November 1735 in Ringmer.  He was then of Wartling and she of Lewes.

Henry and Sarah had 1 known daughter:

    1. Sarah Duffell was baptised on 16 July 1738 in Ringmer.

  8. Thomas Dufild was baptised on 25 February 1715/6 in Isfield.
