Edward DOWLER (1700-1787)

and Jane GRANT (1709-1783)

 

Edward Duly and Jane Grant were my 5x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 11 May 1730 in Bolney, Sussex.

Edward Dowler was baptised on 25 February 1699/1700 at the parish church of St. George in West Grinstead, Sussex.  He was the son of Edward Dowling (1669-1760) and Mary (?-1758).  He died aged 87 years and was buried on 12 March 1787 in Cowfold, Sussex.  Probate of his estate was granted to his son, Edward Dowlen of Pelham House.  In 1731 Edward was an overseer of Cowfold.  He was left a shilling in the 1707 will of his uncle John Freeman.  (John was an uncle by marriage to Elizabeth Dowlen.)

Jane Grant was born on 28 December 1709 and baptised on 2 February 1709/10 in Henfield, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Grant (c1660-1715) and Ann Buck (c1665-1735).  She died on 23 November 1783 and was buried on 26 November 1783 in Cowfold.

Edward and Jane were mentioned in the 1775 will of her brother, Daniel Grant.  In April 1769, Edward Dowlen the elder hired John Batchelor for 1 year.

 

Edward Dowler and Jane Grant had 11 known children:

  1. Anne Dowler was baptised on 14 February 1730/1 in Cowfold, Sussex and buried there on 23 March 1730/1.

  2. John Dowlen was born on 23 March 1732 and baptised on 1 April 1732 (not Cowfold or West Grinstead).  He was a yeoman farmer.  John married Jane Turner in 1769 in Itchingfield, Sussex.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Edward Dowler was baptised on 2 November 1735 in West Grinstead, Sussex and buried there on 4 November 1735.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism and burial register.

  4. Mary Dowler was born on 17 March 1736/7 and baptised on 3 April 1737 in West Grinstead.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

  5. Ann Dowler was born on 21 June 1739 and baptised on 7 July 1739 in West Grinstead.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

    Ann married Joseph Bates of Nuthurst, on 24 May 1759 in West Grinstead.  The witnesses were John Dowler and Edward Dowler.

    Joseph was baptised on 17 February 1739/40 in Nuthurst and was the son of John Bates and Mary Bland.

    Joseph and Ann had the following children:

    1. Ann Bates was baptised on 13 April 1760 in Nuthurst.

    2. Joseph Bates was born about 1762.

    3. Nanny Bates was baptised on 6 January 1765 in Nuthurst.

    4. Elizabeth Bates was baptised on 15 June 1766 in Nuthurst

    5. Susannah Bates was baptised on 25 August 1771 in Nuthurst..

    6. Mary Bates was baptised on 2 March 1783 in Nuthurst.

  6. Elizabeth Dowler was born on 24 December 1741 and baptised on 6 January1741/2 in West Grinstead.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  She married George Buckwell in 1767.  (They have their own page.)

  7. Edward Dowler was born on 10 October 1744 and baptised on 21 October 1744 in Cowfold.  In 1785 he became the tenant of Goodyers and Woodlands in Cowfold for a period of 21 years.  He died aged 70 years on 11 January 1815 and was buried on 18 January 1815 in Cowfold.  Edward was a witness to the marriage of James Woolven of Nuthurst and Mary Anscombe of Cowfold, on 29 September 1781 in Cowfold.

    Edward married Sarah Unwins by licence on 18 June 1778 in Cowfold.  The witnesses to the marriage were Joseph Bates and Robert Unwins.

    Sarah was baptised 21 September 1749 in Cowfold and was the daughter Robert Unwins and Sarah.  Sarah died aged 80 years on 1 May 1830 and was buried on 5 May 1830 in Cowfold.

  8. Sarah Dowler was born on 14 October 1746 and baptised on 1 November 1746 in West Grinstead.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  She was buried on 15 March 1825 in Bolney.

    Sarah married John Davey by banns on 31 July 1768 in Cowfold.  He was then of Bolney and she of Cowfold.  The witnesses were Joseph Bates and John Dowlen.

    John and Sarah had 7 known children:

    1. Sarah Davy was baptised on 2 July 1769 in Bolney.

    2. Edward Davy was baptised on 4 August 1771 in Bolney.

    3. James Davy was baptised on 21 November 1773 in Bolney.

    4. Stephen Davy was baptised on 27 May 1776 in Bolney.

    5. Sarah Davy was baptised on 26 December 1778 in Bolney.

    6. Charles Davy was baptised on 19 August 1781 in Bolney.

    7. Elizabeth Davy was baptised on 6 June 1784 in Bolney.

  9. Christian Dowler was born on 19 January 1749/50 and baptised on 11 February 1749/50 in West Grinstead.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

    Christian married Daniel Wood by banns on 29 June 1779 in Cowfold.  He was then of Shipley, Sussex and she of Cowfold.  The witnesses were Edward Dowlen and Charles Dowlen.

    Daniel and Christian had 6 known children:

    1. Christian Wood was baptised on 18 April 1780 in Shipley.

    2. Charles Wood was baptised on 31 December 1781 in Shipley.

    3. Edward Wood was baptised on 7 November 1784 in Shipley.

    4. Daniel Wood was baptised on 5 August 1787 in Shipley.

    5. Charlotte Wood was baptised on 20 June 1789 in Shipley.

    6. Charlotte Wood was baptised on 29 September 1793 in Shipley.

  10. Thomas Dowler was born on 13 October 1751 and baptised on 27 October 1751 in West Grinstead.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  He died on 1 August 1827 within the parish of St. Mary's in Guildford, Surrey.  Thomas was a saddler/collar maker of High Street, Guildford.  In September 1825 he received half an acre of land, part of Frithland, from George Buckwell.  The piece of land was previously owned by Bates and before that by Grant.

    Thomas married Martha Boyce on 25 May 1786 at St. Saviours, Southwark, London.  Martha was born in about 1746 and died on 2 May 1838 in Guildford.  The informant on her death certificate was Edward Davey.

  11. Charles Dowler, my 4x Great Grandfather, was born on 4 July 1754 and baptised on 21 July 1754 in West Grinstead.  Both his parents were named in the baptism register.  Charles married 5 24 Ann West in 1783.  (They have their own page.)
