Edward DOWLING (1669-1760)

and Mary (?-1758)

Edward Dowling and Mary were my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married sometime before or about 1694, in or near West Grinstead, Sussex, but so far no possible marriage has been found in the IGI or the Sussex Family History Group's marriage index.

Edward Dowling was baptised on 30 January 1669/70 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  He was the son of 5 27 Edward Dowling (1631-1706) and 5 27 Ann (?-1688).  He was buried on 28 November 1760 in West Grinstead, as Edward Dowler, senior.

Maryís date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 7 February 1757/8 in West Grinstead, as Mary Dowler.  Her name was also at times recorded as Maria.

Edward Dowling and Mary had 8 known children:

  1. Elisabeth Dowler was baptised on 17 March 1694/5 in West Grinstead.  She was buried on 3 April 1776 in Cowfold by the name of Elizabeth Dowlen.  She was left a shilling in the 1707 will of her uncle John Freeman.

  2. Mary Dowley was baptised on 17 January 1696/7 in West Grinstead.  She was left a shilling in the 1707 will of her uncle John Freeman.

  3. Edward Dowler, my 5x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 25 February 1699/1700 in West Grinstead.  He married 5 25 Jane Grant in 1730.  (They have their own page.)

  4. Sarah Dowler was baptised on 1 March 1701/2 in West Grinstead.  She was left 40 shillings in the 1707 will of her uncle and godfather John Freeman.

  5. William Dowler was baptised on 30 September 1705 in West Grinstead.  He was buried on 14 March 1735/6 in West Grinstead.

  6. Anne Dowler was baptised on 11 January 1707/8 in West Grinstead.

  7. Thomas Dowler was baptised on 14 October 1711 in West Grinstead.  He was buried on 9 March 1740/1 in Shermanbury, Sussex.

Thomas married twice.  Firstly to Susan Silsby on 6 May 1736 in Shermanbury.  At the time of their marriage Thomas was of Cowfold and Susan of Shermanbury.

Susan was buried on 21 February 1736/7 in Shermanbury.

Thomas and Susan had 1 known daughter:

    1. Hannah Dowlen was baptised on 18 February 1736/7 in Shermanbury and buried there on 24 May 1737.

Thomas then married Mary Jenner on 9 October 1739 in Steyning, Sussex.

Thomas and Mary had 1 known son:

    1. Edward Dowlen was baptised on 4 January 1740/1 in Cowfold.  He was buried on 14 April 1742 in Shermanbury.

After Thomasís death, Mary married William Stenning on 7 October 1742 in Cowfold.

Mary was buried on 2 February 1788 in Cowfold.  William Stenning was also buried in Cowfold on 29 December 1788.

William and Mary had the following children:

    4. John Stenning was baptised on 20 August 1749 in Cowfold.  Did he marry Hannah Day by banns on 14 August 1775 in Chailey, Sussex?  The  witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Bull and Nathaniel Welch.  Might he also have married Mary Swaine by licence on 25 August 1784 in Chailey?  John was then a widower and they were both of Chailey.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Hoather and James Kemp.

    5. James Stenning was baptised on 26 April 1752 in Cowfold.  James may have married Mary Glasebrook by banns on 27 August 1778 in Cowfold.  He was then from Chailey.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Martin and Walter Hills.
