Charles DOWLEN (1827-1896)

and Susan HOADLEY (1834-1901)

St. Peter's, Henfield, circa 1905 - from http://www.westsussexpast.org.uk/pictures/index.htmlCharles Dowlen and Susan Hoadley were my 2x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by banns on 28 September 1856 at the parish church of St. Peter's in Henfield, Sussex.  They were both of full age and both of Henfield and could both sign their names.  He was a bachelor and labourer and she a spinster.  The witnesses to their marriage were Isaac Adams (1825-1862) and Ann Dowlen (1836-1915) who both made their X marks.  (Isaac was soon to be Charles's brother-in-law and Ann his sister.  Isaac and Ann married in 1857.)

St. Mary's, Slaugham, circa 1910 - from http://www.westsussexpast.org.uk/pictures/index.htmlCharles Dowlen was born on 23 January 1827 and baptised on 4 March 1827 at St. Mary's in Slaugham, Sussex.  He was the eldest son of 5 23 John Dowlen (1802-1875) and Elizabeth Mansbridge (1808-1879).  Charles died aged 69 years on 27 April 1896 at Frogs Hole, Henfield.  His cause of death was tetanus for 5 days and cardiac failure.  His death was registered by his brother Mark Dowlen.  When the 1841 census was recorded he was 14 years old and living with his parents and younger siblings at Blundens in Henfield.  In 1851 Charles was an unmarried 23 year old servant and agricultural labourer, living in the home of William Wickham at Morleys in Woodmancote, Sussex.  He registered his mother-in-law's death in 1881 and he was then of Shiprods Cottage, Henfield.

Susan Hoadley was baptised on 27 July 1834 in Henfield.  She was the daughter of John Hoadley (1799-1865) and Susan Norris (1802-1881).  The baptis  register noted her father was a cordwainer.  Her death was registered in the second quarter of 1901 in the Steyning registration district.  At the time of the 1841 census Susanna was 7 years old and living with her parents and siblings in Church Street, Henfied.  In 1851 Susan was 16 years old and living with her parents in Church Lane, Henfield.

On 26 November 1854 Charles and Susan were witnesses to the marriage of Susan's brother Albert Hoadley to Emma Geere.

When the 1861 census was recorded the couple and young son were living at New Inn Green, Henfield.  Charles was a 34 year old agricultural labourer and Susan was 27.  He gave his place of birth as Slaugham and she as Henfield.

By 1871 the family were living at Oreham Common, Henfield.  Charles was a 44 year old agricultural labourer and Susan was 37.  Four children were at home on census night.  The previous property on the census enumerators route was that of the Blue Anchor and it was occupied by the family of Edward Lelliott.

The 1881 census sees the family living at Shiprods Cottages in Henfield.  Charles was a 54 year old agricultural labourer and Susan was 47.  Three children were at home on census night.

When the 1891 census was recorded Charles and Susan were living in the home of their daughter Susan Edith and her husband, in South Street, Chailey, Sussex.  Charles was a 64 year old labourer and Susan was 57.

At the time of the 1901 census Susan was a 67 year old widow and living with the family of her daughter Susan Edith at 3 Park Crescent, Portslade, Sussex.

Charles Dowlen and Susan Hoadley had 5 known children:

  1. John Dowlen was baptised on 20 January 1858 in Henfield.  In 1861 he was 3 years old and living with his parents.  In 1871 he was a 13 year old agricultural labourer and living at home.

John had left his parents home by 1881 and may have been the 24 year old John Dowling boarding at 21 Locksley Street in London, where he was an unmarried schoolmaster who gave his place of birth at Brighton, Sussex.  In 1891, 34 year old John Dowling was living with his 29 year old wife and children at 5 ? Thomas was baptised on 3 July 1864 in Cuckfield, Sussex and was the son of James Newnham (c1820-?) and Rebecca Chatfield.  Thomas died aged 82 years and his death was registered in the first quarter of 1947 in the Cuckfield registration district.  He was a bricklayer's labourer.  In 1901 the family were living in Cuckfield.

Susan married Peter Jesse Wynn on 26 December 1888 in Henfield.  At the time of their marriage Peter was a 20 year old bachelor and watchmaker of Burgess Hill, Sussex.  Susan was a 23 year old spinster and servant of Henfield.  The witnesses to their marriage were Charles Dowlen, Henry Thomas Wynn and Olive Dowlen.

Peter was born about 1868 in Brighton and was the son of Henry Thomas Wynn (1843-?) and Ruth Buckwell (1841-?).

In 1891 the could and young son were living in South Street, Chailey.  Peter Jesse was a 22 year old watchmaker and Susan Edith was 24.  Also with them were Susan's parents.
