Charles DOWLEN

and Susan HOADLEY (1834-1901)

Charles Dowlen and Susan Hoadley were my 2x Great
Grandparents. (Click
here to see their place in my pedigree chart.) They married
by banns on 28 September 1856 at the parish church of St. Peter's in Henfield, Sussex.
They were both of full age and both of Henfield and could both sign their
names. He was a bachelor and labourer and she a spinster. The
witnesses to their marriage were Isaac Adams (1825-1862) and Ann Dowlen
(1836-1915) who both made their X marks. (Isaac was soon to be
Charles's brother-in-law and Ann his sister. Isaac and Ann married in
1857.)
Charles Dowlen was born on 23 January 1827 and baptised on 4 March
1827 at St. Mary's in Slaugham, Sussex. He was the eldest son of

Mark Dowlen. When the 1841 census was recorded he was 14 years old
and living with his parents and younger siblings at Blundens in Henfield.
In 1851 Charles was an unmarried 23 year old servant and agricultural
