James DOWICK (c1730-1763)

and Mary (?-1779)

James Dowick and Mary married sometime before or about 1754.  They settled in Pulborough, Sussex.  Might they have married as James Dewick and Mary Smith on 15 October 1744 in Barrow-upon-Soar in Leicestershire?  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

James Dowick's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He was buried on 23 June 1763 in Pulborough, by the name of James Dowick.  Might he have been a bargeman or waterman?

A James Dewck was baptised on 18 November 1722 at St. Andrew's in Holborn, London, the son of William Dewick and Isabella (they also had another son, William, baptised there in March 1720).  The IGI also records that children were born to James Dewick and Elizabeth between 1720 and 1740 in Barrow-upon-Soar, including a James in 1740.  Might the 1744 marriage of James and Mary, have been of widower James?

Mary's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 2 July 1779 in Pulborough, by the name of Mary Dowick.

James Dowick and Mary had 6 known children:

  1. John Dowick was baptised on 16 June 1754 in Pulborough.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  He married Avice Piper in 1783.  (They have their own page.)

  2. James Dowick was baptised on 4 December 1756 in Pulborough.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  He most probably died young.

  3. Sarah Dowick was baptised on 30 July 1758 in Pulborough.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  She was buried on 5 March 1759 in Pulborough and the burial register noted that she was the daughter of James Dowick.

  4. James Dowick was baptised on 6 September 1759 in Pulborough.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  He was buried on 24 September 1759 in Pulborough and the burial register noted that he was the son of James Dowick.

  5. Thomas Dowick was baptised on 6 September 1759 in Pulborougn.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  He was buried on 24 September 1759 in Pulborough and the burial register noted that he was the son of James Dowick.

  6. James Doick was baptised on 18 January 1761 in Pulborough.  Both his parents were named in the baptism register as James and Mary.
