Joshua DIXON (1769-1852)
and Jane SMITH (c1783-1827)

Joshua Dixon
and
Jane Smith
were my 4x Great Grandparents. (Click
here to see their place in my pedigree chart.) They married by
banns on 6 September 1804 in the parish church of St. Nicholas in Guildford,
Surrey. Joshua was of the Guildford Barracks and Jane of St. Nicholas.
Joshua Dixon
was baptised on 7 January 1770 in Henham,
Essex. He was the son of

Dixon (1741-?) and

Susanna
Brand (1740-?). He died
aged 84 years in Sun Street, Brighton and was buried on 17 October 1852 at
St. Nicholas in Brighton. He joined the 10th
Light Dragoon Guards in 1795. On his release from the army in 1814 he
became a shoemaker. In 1841 he was living in Carlton Row, Brighton along
with his unmarried daughter Elizabeth and her son John. By the time of
the 1851 census he was an 82 year old Chelsea Pensioner (cordwainer) living
at 31 Sun Street in Brighton. Joshua was alone, but shared the property
with the Lloyd family of three.
Jane Smith's date
and place of birth and baptism are unknown, to me.
She died aged 43 years at
North Steine Row and was buried on 13 May 1827 in Brighton. A Jane
Smith, twin daughter of John Heather and Ann Smith of
Perry Hill, Worplesdon, Surrey was baptised on 3 January 1784, and was then
buried as an infant.
Joshua Dixon and Jane Smith had 8 known children:

was baptised on 24 June 1805 in Playden,
Sussex.

Dixon, my 3x Great Grandmother
was baptised on 10 June 1809 at St. Nicholas, Brighton. She married
William Spicer
in 1829. (They have their own
page.)

Frances Dixon
was baptised on 10 October 1811 in
Brighton.

Jane Dixon
was baptised on 27 November 1814 in
Brighton. She may have married William Ede by banns on 23 August 1835
in Brighton. She was then a spinster and he a bachelor and they were
both of Brighton. They both signed their names. The witnesses
to the marriage were Benjamin Markwick and Ann Davis who
also both signed their names.

Sarah Dixon
was baptised on 9 February 1817 in
Brighton.

Elizabeth Dixon
was baptised on 16 April 1820 in
Brighton. In 1841 she was a dressmaker. She died aged 25 years in Sun
Street and was buried on 23 July 1844 in Brighton. She had an
illegitimate son:

John Dixon
was born about 1839.

Ann Dixon
was baptised on 2 October 1821 in
Brighton. She died aged 1 year at North Steine Row and was buried on 16
November 1822 in Brighton.

William Dixon
was baptised on 13 July 1824 in Brighton
and buried there on 10 August 1824. He died at North Steine Row.
