Thomas DENYER
(1754-?)
and Sarah BULL (c1755-?)

Thomas Denyer
and
Sarah Bull
were my 4x Great Grandparents. (Click
here to see their place in my pedigree chart.) They married
on 26 November 1777 at the parish church of St. Margaret's in Fernhurst, Sussex. Thomas was then a servant of Woolbeding and Sarah of Fernhurst. The witnesses
to their marriage were
Richard Denyer
and
Richard Roly.
The banns were published at Woolbeding parish church on 9, 16 and 23 November
1777.
Thomas Denyer,
was I believe,
baptised on 1 April 1754 in Lurgashall,
Sussex, the son of
William Denyer
(1713-?) and
Mary Wild (1716-?).
Sarah Bull’s
date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me. A Sarah Bull
was baptised on 21 October 1753 in Petworth, the daughter of Thomas Bull
and Sarah Barber. But I think she married James Hurst on
5 November 1777 in Petworth.
Thomas Denyer and Sarah
Bull had 7 or 8 known children:
-
Thomas Denyer
was baptised privately on 13 June 1783 in
Woolbeding.
-
Elizabeth Denyer
was baptised on 29 September 1785 in
Midhurst and it was noted in the baptism register that her parents were
paupers from Woolavington. Was this the same Elizabeth who was baptised in 1789 aged 3
years?
-
Elizabeth Denyer
was born about 1786 and baptised on 1
March 1789 in Woolbeding. A note in the parish register records "This
infant was privately baptised 3 years before but not registered". Did she
marry James
Hersey on 1 August 1815 in
Easebourne, Sussex, or
William Caplen
(born 1792 Lurgashall) on 10 October 1815
in Lurgashall, Sussex?
-
Hannah Denyer
was baptised privately on 21 October 1787
in Woolbeding and buried there on 28 November 1787. Her parents were
described as paupers at her baptism.
-
Sarah Denyer
was baptised privately on 17 November 1788
in Woolbeding. Her parents were then described as paupers.
-
Ann Denyer
was baptised on 29 April 1791 in
Woolbeding. She was a witness to her sister Charlotte’s marriage on
9 August 1814, when she was still single.
Ann married
Richard Burns
on 25 March 1815 in Woolbeding.
Richard was born baptised on 18 September 1791 in Stedham and was the son
of Moses Burne and Ann Elliot.
When the 1851 census was recorded the couple were living in a house in
Stedham village and Richard was an agricultural labourer. Also with
them on census night was the family of their son Moses.
Richard and Ann had the following children:
-
Moses Burns was born about 1816 in Woolbeding. He married
Mary before or about 1843. In 1851 he was a 35 year old agricultural
labourer.
Mary's name was recorded as Ann in the 1851 census and she was born about
1816 in Easebourne. In 1851 she was a labourer at a paper factory.
Moses and Mary had the following children:
-
Moses Burns was born about 1843 in Sufling, Suffolk. In 1851
he was an 8 year old scholar.
-
Charlotte Burns was baptised on 26 January 1845 in Stedham.
She was a 6 year old scholar in 1851.
-
Aaron Burns was baptised on 29 May 1846 in Stedham. In 1851
he was a 4 year old scholar.
-
Noah Burns was baptised on 7 April 1848 in Stedham. He was 3
years old in 1851.
-
Job Burns was baptised on 29 January 1829 in Stedham.
-
Charlotte
Denyer, my 3x Great
Grandparents, was baptised on 1 December 1793 in Woolbeding. She married
John
Pearson in 1814. (They have
their own page.)
-
Robert Denyer
was baptised privately on 5 August 1795 in
Woolbeding. He married Charlotte Boxall
in
1819. (They have their own page.)
