William Denman and Susan Godsmark may have been my 8x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their possibly place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 27 June 1672 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  William had previously married Margaret Morley on 6 June 1658 in Shermanbury, Sussex.

William Denman was baptised on 25 April 1636 in Shermanbury.  He was the son of Thomas Denman (1601-1670) and Joan Gogger (c1605-1641).  He was buried on 12 January 1705 in Shermanbury and the burial register recorded that he was William Denman, senior.

Margaret Morley's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 10 August 1671 in Shermabury and the burial register recorded that she was Margaret wife of William Denman.

Susan Godsmark was baptised on 16 February 1639/40 in West Grinstead.  She was the daughter of Nicholas Godsmark (1597-1688) and Elizabeth Slater.  She was buried on 20 April 1695 in Shermanbury and the burial register recorded that she was Susan wife of William Denman.

The Shermanbury parish registers are missing from 1641 until 1653.

William Denman and Margaret Morley had 1 known child:

1. Ann Denman was baptised on 25 June 1661 in Shermanbury.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

William Denman and Susan Godsmark had 4 or possibly 5 known children:

1. William Denman was baptised on 9 February 1672/3 in Shermanbury and buried there on 24 February 1672/3.

2. William Denman was baptised on 22 March 1673/4 in Shermanbury.  He may have married Sarah Woolven on 13 October 1696 in Horsham, Sussex.  She was then a spinster.

3. John Denman was baptised on 2 July 1676 in Shermanbury.

   John married Bridget Horley on 21 April 1696 in Shermanbury.  She was then of Cowfold.

   John and Bridget had 6 known children:

   1. Elizabeth Denman was baptised on 28 February 1696/7 in Shermanbury.

   2. William Denman was baptised on 3 March 1698/9 in Shermanbury.

   3. John Denman was baptised on 6 October 1700 in Shermanbury.

   4. Charity Denman was baptised on 1 January 1702/3 in Shermanbury.

   5. Mary Denman was baptised on 31 May 1704 in Shermanbury and buried there on 21 August 1704.

   6. George Denman was baptised on 28 August 1709 in Shermanbury.

4. Hannah Denman, my 7x Great Grandmother, may have been born in the gap between John and Henry.  She married Nicholas West in 1700.  (They have their own page.)  The couple did name 1 of their 3 children William - might this have been after her father?

5. Henry Denman was baptised on 12 January 1679/80 in Shermanbury.

   Henry married twice, firstly to Mary Woolvin by licence dated 4 June 1706, which was issued by the Archdeaconry of Chichester.  Their marriage licence recorded that Henry was then of Shermabury and Mary a spinster of Washington.  Surety for the licence was provided by Henry himself, Edward Murrell and John Doe.

   Henry and Mary had 1 known daughter:

   1. Abigail Denman was baptised on 24 May 1709 in Shermanbury.  She married Thomas Turner on 26 September 1732 in Warnham.  She was then of West Grinstead and he a Soujourner of Horsham.

   Henry then married Mary Grant by licence on 16 December 1712 in Henfield.  Their marriage licence was dated 15 December 1712 and was issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes.  He was then of Shermanbury and she a spinster of Henfield.

   Mary was probably born on 14 August 1688 in Henfield, the daughter of John Grant (c1660-1715) and Ann Buck (c1665-1735).  She was buried on 20 May 1745 in Shermanbury and the burial register recorded that she was Mary wife of Henry Denman.

   Henry and Mary had 1 known daughter:

   2. Mary Denman was baptised on 18 February 1713/4 in Henfield.  She may have married Thomas Dench on 14 April 1735 in Shermanbury.  At the time they were both of Shermanbury.
