Isaac DEAN (1824-1905)

and Dorinda MOORE (1827-1920)

 

Isaac Dean and Drenda Moore married in the second quarter of 1846 in the Thakeham, Sussex registration district.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Isaac Dean may have been born in 1824 in Shipley, Sussex, although he was baptised on 9 January 1825 in Ashington, Sussex.  He was the son of George Dean (1786-1856) and Catherine Goacher (1787-1867).  The baptism register noted his father was a huckster from Shipley.  Isaac died aged 80 years and his death was registered in the first quarter of 1905 in the Cuckfield registration district.  When the 1841 census was recorded he was a 15 year old servant in the home of 55 year old George Goacher at Jessops in Ashurst, Sussex.

Dorinda Moore was baptised on 14 October 1827 in Cowfold, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Henry Moore (1805-1834) and Mary Ann Smith (c1809-1833).  The baptism register noted her father was a labourer.  Derenda Dean died aged 93 years and her death was registered in the fourth quarter of 1920 in the Cuckfield registration district.  At the time of the 1841 census she was a 14 year old servant living in the home of Henry Leppard in Bolney.

When the 1851 census was recorded the couple and 3 children (William, John and Harriott) were living at Charts in Washington, Sussex.  Isaac was a 26 year old agricultural labourer from Shipley and Derenda was 24 and from Cowfold.

In 1861 the couple and 6 children (William, John, Harriett, Susan, Louisa and George) were living on Heath Common, Washington.  Isaac was a 37 year old agricultural labourer and Derenda was 36.  He was from Shipley and she from Cowfold.  Also with the family was Isaac's widowed 74 year old mother Catherine Dean who had been born in Shipley.

The 1871 census recorded the couple and 5 children (John, George, Henry, Mary A. and Elizabeth were living at Little Theobolds in Keymer, Sussex.  Isaac was a 47 year old agricultural labourer from Shipley and Devenda was 45 and from Cowfold.

At the time of the 1881 census the couple and 6 children (Louisa, George, Henry, Mary A., Elizabeth D. and Charles A.) were living at Little Theobalds, Keymer.  Isaac was a 56 agricultural labourer and Derenda was 53.

The couple and 3 children (Henry, Elizabeth D. and Charles A.) were still living at Little Theobalds, Keymer in 1891.  Isaac was a 6 year old agricultural labourer and Deronda was 63.  Also with them was 2 year old granddaughter, Isabella Dean who had been born in Keymer.

In 1901 the couple and 2 children (Henry and Derenda) were at Little Theobalds.  Isaac was a 75 year old garden labourer and Derenda was 73.  Also with them was 7 year old granddaughter, Isabella Dean who had been born in Keymer.

By the time of the 1911 census Derenda Dean was an 85 year old widow living in Haywards Heath.  Also with her were 2 of her children (Henry and Elizabeth Derenda).  She said she had been married 59 years and had had 10 children, 9 of who were living and 1 had died.

 

Isaac Dean and Dorinda Moore had 10 known children:

  1. William Dean was baptised on 30 May 1847 in Ashington.  In 1851 he was 4 years old and the census noted he was born in Ashington.  He was a 14 year old farm boy in 1851.

  2. John Dean was baptised on 18 February 1849 in Ashington.  In 1851 he was 2 years old and the census noted he was born in Ashington.  He was a 12 year old farm boy in 1851.  In 1871 he was an unmarried 22 year old agricultural labourer.

  3. Harriet Dean was baptised on 27 April 1851 in Washington.  At the time of the 1851 census she was 3 months old and had been born in Washington.  She was a 10 year old scholar in 1851.

  4. Susan Dean was baptised on 6 August 1853 in Washington.  She was an 8 year old scholar in 1851.

  5. Louisa Dean was baptised on 12 December 1858 in Washington.  She married Charles Field in 1881.  (They have their own page.)

  6. George Dean was born about 1861 in Washington.  At the time of the 1851 census he was 2 months old.  In 1871 he was 10 years old.  In 1881 he was a 20 year old agricultural labourer.

  7. Henry Dean was born about 1864 in Washington.  In 1871 he was 7 years old.  He was a 17 year old agricultural labourer.  In 1891 he was an unmarried 26 year old agricultural labourer.  He was a 30 year old builder's labourer in 1901.  The 1911 census recorded he was an unmarried 46 year old bricklayer.

  8. Mary Ann Dean was baptised on 9 June 1867 at St. John's, Keymer.  She was 4 years old in 1871.  In 1881 she was a 14 year old scholar.

  9. Elizabeth Derenda Dean was baptised on 11 September 1870 at St. John's, Keymer.  She was 11 months old at the time of the 1871 census.  In 1881 she was a 10 year old scholar.  She was 21 years old in 1891.  In 1901 she was 27 years old and working in a laundry.  She was an unmarried 40 year old in 1911 and working in a laundry.

  10. Charles Alfred Dean was baptised on 29 December 1872 in Wivelsfield.  He was an 8 year old scholar in 1881.  In 1891 he was 19 years old.
