George DEAN (1786-1856)

and Catherine GOACHER (1787-1867)

George Dean and Catherine Goacher married by banns on 3 February 1807 in Shipley, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were Hannah Dean and Philadelphia Dean.  (The were not my direct ancestors.)

George Deane was most probably born in Durrington, Sussex and baptised on 16 July 1786 in Angmering, Sussex.  He was the son of John Deane and Sarah Standen.  (When his parents married in West Tarring in 1785 they were both of Durrington.)  George died aged 73 years (as per the register) and was buried on 26 November 1856 in Shipley.  The burial register noted he was from Ashington.

Katherine Gocher was baptised on 13 April 1787 in Shipley, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Daniel Gocher (1749-1824) and Elizabeth Knight (?-1805).  She died in Washington, Sussex in 1867.

At the time of the 1841 census the couple and 3 children (George, James and Ellen) were living in Washington.  George was said to be a 55 year old agricultural labourer and Catherine was 54.  Also with the family was 25 year old James Green and 66 year old Abraham Kendell who were both agricultural labourers.

When the 1851 census was recorded the couple and 2 children (James and Ellen) were living in Washington.  George was a 64 year old agricultural labourer from Durrington and Catherine was 63 and from Shipley.  Also with them was 2 month old granddaughter, Harriott Dean.

By 1861, Catherine was a 74 year old widow and living with the family of her son Isaac on Heath Common, Washington.

George Dean and Catherine Goacher had 9 known children:

  1. Mary Dean was baptised on 6 September 1807 in Shipley.

Mary married Alexander Flote by licence on 20 December 1825 in Shipley.  He was a bachelor from Steyning and she was a spinster.  The witnesses to their marriage were Edward Botting and George Dean.  Their marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Chichester on 13 December 1825 and noted that Alexander Float was a 22 year old bachelor from Guildford, whilst Mary was a 20 year old spinster of Shipley and married with the consent of George Dean.

  2. Sarah Dean was baptised on 1 November 1809 in Shipley.  Sarah died aged 61 years and was buried on 12 February 1871 in Shipley.

Sarah married Michael Streater by banns on 25 January 1826 in Shipley.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.  The witnesses to their marriage were Edward Bristow and Sarah Streater.

  3. George Dean was baptised on 29 January 1815 in Shipley.  The baptism register noted his father was a labourer.

George married Frances Baker in the second quarter of 1842 in the Thakeham registration district.

Frances was born about 1820 in Washington.

When the 1851 census was recorded the couple and 3 children (Caroline, Walter and Ann) were living in Washington.  George was then a 36 year old agricultural labourer and Francis was 30.  He gave his place of birth as Shipley and she as Washington.

George and Frances had the following children:

    1. Caroline Dean was born about 1843 in Washington.  She was 8 years old in 1851.

    2. Walter Dean was born about 1846 in Washington.  He was 5 years old in 1851.

    3. Ann Dean was born about 1850 in Washington.  She was a year old at the time of the 1851 census.

  4. James Dean was baptised on 26 October 1817 in Shipley.  The baptism register noted his father was a labourer.  In 1851 he was an unmarried 34 year old agricultural labourer.

  5. William Dean was baptised on 25 September 1820 in Shipley.  The baptism register noted his father was a labourer.  He died aged 1 week and was buried on 27 September 1820 in Shipley.

  6. Isaac Dean may have been born in 1824 in Shipley, Sussex, although he was baptised on 9 January 1825 in Ashington.  The baptism register noted his father was a huckster from Shipley.  He married Dorinda Moore in 1846.  (They have their own page.)

  7. Caroline Dean was baptised on 2 June 1822 in Shipley.  The baptism register noted her father was a labourer.

  8. Harriot Dean was baptised on 20 May 1827 in Shipley.  The baptism register noted her father was a labourer.

    Ellen had the following daughter:

    1. Harriet Dean was baptised on 2 March 1851 in Washington.  She was 2 months old when the 1851 census was recorded.

Ellen married Peter Penfold by banns on 14 May 1853 in Shipley.  He was a bachelor and labourer and she a spinster.  Their fathers were named as Peter Penfold and George Dean who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were Charles Bristow and Jane Penfold.
