Thomas DAVEY (1820-1894)

and Mary Ann ROBERTS (1821-1897)

 

Thomas Davey and Mary Ann Roberts married by banns on 19 February 1842 in Cowfold, Sussex.  He was a bachelor and labourer from Bolney and she a spinster and minor.  Their fathers were named as John Davey a labourer and William Roberts a sawyer.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Roberts and Ann Roberts.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Thomas was the nephew of my 5x Great Grandmother, Ann Alfrey.)

Thomas Davey was baptised on 23 January 1820 in Shermanbury, Sussex.  He was the son of John Davey (c1782-1871) and Sarah Alfrey (1792-1825).  He died aged 74 years and his death was registered in the first quarter of 1894 in the Cuckfield registration district.  When the 1841 census was recorded he was 20 years old and living with his father and step mother in Wineham Lane, Shermanbury.

Mary Ann Roberts was baptised on 6 December 1821 in Cowfold, Sussex.  She was the daughter of William Roberts (1801-1889) and Charity Mansbridge (1797-1861).  Mary Ann died aged 75 years and her death was registered in the fourth quarter of 1897 in the Cuckfield.  When the 1841 census was recorded she may have been a 15 year old servant in the home of John Blake at Sakeham in Shermanbury.

At the time of the 1851 census the couple and 5 children (Caroline, Sarah, William, Harriet and Frances) were living in Wheatsheaf Cottage, Shermanbury.  Thomas was a 32 year old agricultural labourer and Mary was 29.  He gave his place of birth as Shermanbury and she as Cowfold.

In 1861 the couple and 5 children ( Harriet, Frances, John, Alice and George) were living in Partridge Green within the parish of West Grinstead, Sussex.  Thomas was a 41 year old agricultural labourer and Mary A. was 40.  They again said they were born in Shermanbury and Cowfold.

The 1871 census recorded the couple and 3 children (George, Albert and Ellen) were living at ?wood Hill in Bolney, Sussex.  He was a 51 year old agricultural labourer and she was 49.  Once again they said they were born in Shermanbury and Cowfold.  Also lodging with the family was Thomas's half brother David Davey and his son Peter.

When the 1881 census was recorded the couple and daughter Ellen were living at 3 Budgins in Hurstpierpoint.  Thomas was a 62 year old agricultural labourer and Mary was 60.  They were both said to have been born in Cowfold.

By 1891 the couple were living with their daughter Caroline in ? Cottages, Hurstpierpoint.  He was a 71 year old agricultural labourer and she was 69.  He was born in Shermanbury and she in Cowfold.

 

Thomas Davey and Mary Ann Roberts had 10 known children:

  1. Caroline Davey was baptised on 2 October 1842 in Shermanbury, Sussex.  She was an 8 year old scholar in 1851.

    Caroline married George Goacher on 31 October 1863 in Hurstpierpoint.

    George was born about 1835 in Ashurst, Sussex.

    When the 1891 census was recorded the couple were living at ? Cottages in Hurstpierpoint.  George was a 56 year old agricultural labourer and Caroline was 48.  He was born in Ashurst and she in Shermanbury.  Also with them were her parents and 13 year old niece and scholar, Emily Mansbridge.

  2. Sarah Davey was baptised on 24 November 1844 in Shermanbury.  She was a 6 year old scholar in 1851.

    Sarah married James Knight on 17 June 1865 in Hurstpierpoint.

    James was baptised on 20 April 1845 in Shermanbury and was the son of Peter Knight and Reney Elms.

    James and Sarah had the following children:

    1. Mary Ann Knight

    2. Emily Knight

    3. Richard Knight

    4. James Knight

  3. William Davey was baptised on 2 September 1846 in Shermanbury.  He was 4 years old in 1851.

    William married Harriet Jarrad in the fourth quarter of 1868 in the Guildford registration district.

    Harriet was born about 1850 in Clandon, Surrey.

    William and Harriet had the following children:

    1. Mary A Davey

    2. Ellen Elizabeth Davey

    3. Emma Davey

    4. Alfred Davey

    5. Henry Davey

    6. Frank Davey

    7. Harriet Alice Davey

    8. Rose Susannah Davey

    9. Mary Davey

  4. Harriet Davey was baptised on 16 July 1848 in Shermanbury.  She was 2 years old in 1851.  In 1861 she was 12 years old.

  5. Frances Davey was baptised on 5 January 1851 in Shermanbury.  She was 4 months old at the time of the 1851 census.  In 1861 she was a 10 year old scholar.

    Frances married Henry Sayers on 11 November 1871 in Hurstpierpoint.

    Henry was born about 1850 in Hurstpierpoint.

    Henry and Frances had the following children:

    1. Harry Sayers

    2. Thomas Sayers

    3. Frances Sayers

  6. John Davey was baptised on 6 June 1853 in Shermanbury.  He was an 8 year old scholar in 1861.

    John married Sarah Fairhall on 25 September 1875 in Hurstpierpoint.

    Sarah was baptised on 17 May 1857 in Bolney and was the daughter of Stephen Fairhall and Sarah.

    John and Sarah had the following children:

    1. Mary Ann Davey

    2. Lizzie Davey

  7. Alice Davey was born in the fourth quarter of 1855 in Shermanbury.  She married Thomas Mansbridge in 1876.  (They have their own page.)

  8. George Davey was baptised on 28 April 1861 in West Grinstead.  At the time of the 1861 census he was 3 months old.  In 1871 he was a 10 year old agricultural labourer.

  9. Albert Davey was baptised on 3 April 1864 in Hurstpierpoint.  He was a 7 year old scholar in 1871.

    Albert married Sarah Bidwell in the second quarter of 1885 in the Bromley, Kent registration district.

    Sarah was born about 1861 in Ely, Cambridgeshire.

    Albert and Sarah had the following children:

    1. Thomas Davey

    2. Ellen Mary Davey

    3. Eliza Fanny Davey

    4. Ada Priscilla Davey

    5. Albert John Davey

    6. Henry James Davey

  10. Ellen Davey was baptised on 20 January 1870 in Hurstpierpoint.  She was a year old when the 1871 census was recorded.  In 1881 she was a 9 year old scholar.

    Ellen married William Fielder in the first quarter of 1901 in the Horsham registration district.

    William was baptised on 6 April 1874 in Wisborough Green, Sussex and was the son of James Fielder and Ann Covey.

    William and Ellen had the following child:

    1. Ellen Mary Fielder
