James DADSWELL (1786-1838)

and Charlotte OVENDEN (1788-1882)


James Dadswell and Charlotte Ovenden married on 2 June 1807 in Mayfield, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

James Dadswell was baptised on 12 March 1786 in Rotherfield, Sussex.  He was the son of Thomas Dadswell (1733-1803) and Sarah Brown (?-1808).  He died on 15 October 1838 and was buried on 18 October 1838 in Mayfield.

Charlotte Ovenden was baptised on 5 October 1788 in Mayfield, Sussex.  She was the daughter of William Ovenden and Mary Wood.  She died aged 99 years (as per her death certificate) on 15 March 1882 in Rotherfield.

The 1841 census recorded that Charlotte was a 50 year old labourer and living at Reedings, Little Street, Mayfield, along with 3 children (James, Alfred and Charles).

In 1851, Charlotte was a 66 year old widow and living with the family of 32 year old widower Edward Bassett and his 2 children, at Gas Lane in Tonbridge.

When the 1871 census was recorded, Charlotte was an 86 year old widow and annuitant and she was living with her married 30 year old granddaughter Isabella Bassett and her 5 year old son Walter at Catts in Rotherfield.

In 1881 Charlotte was a 96 widow and alms woman, and she was living with the family of her daughter Jane in a cottage in Rotherfield.


James Dadswell and Charlotte Ovenden had 10 known children:

  1. James Dadswell

  2. Mary Ann Dadswell was born on 15 November 1809 and baptised on 16 March 1828 in Mayfield.

  3. Obadiah Dadswell was baptised on 8 November 1812 in Mayfield.  He married Sarah Ann Cole in 1837.  (They have their own page.)

  4. Amos Dadswell was baptised on 19 February 1815 in Mayfield.  The baptism register noted his father was a labourer.  He died as an infant and was buried on 11 April 1815 in Mayfield.

  5. Elizabeth Dadswell

  6. James Dadswell was born about 1820.  The 1841 census recorded he was a 20 year old agricultural labourer.

  7. Alfred Dadswell was born on 15 December 1823 and baptised on 20 March 1842 in Mayfield.  He was said to have been a 15 year old agricultural labourer when the 1841 census was recorded.

    Alfred married Mary Ann Cole.

    They had the following child:

    1. James Dadswell married Harriet and they were the parents of:

      1. Walter Henry Dadswell married Mary Valenti and they were the parents of:

        1. Barbara Dadswell

  8. Jane Hannah Dadswell was born about 1825 and baptised on 19 January 1834 in Mayfield.  The baptism register noted her father was a labourer.

    Jane married John Bassett.

    John was born about 1833 in Rotherfield.

    When the 1881 census was recorded the couple and 2 children (Charles and Alfred) were living in a Cottage in Rotherfield.  Also with them was Jane's widowed mother.

    John and Jane had the following children:

    1. Charles Bassett was born about 1841 in Mayfield.  He was an unmarried 25 year old wheelwright in 1881.

    2. Alfred Bassett was born about 1844 in Rotherfield.  He was an unmarried 22 year old hay trusser in 1881.

  9. Thomas William Dadswell was born on 25 November 1828 and baptised on 20 March 1842 in Mayfield.  He died on 5 October 1908 in Australia.

    Thomas married Helena Aurora Scheer in Berlin, Germany in 1856.

    Thomas and Helena had the following child:

    1. Alfred Otto Dadswell married Emma Lewin and they were the parents of:

      1. Henry William Dadswell married Jessie Isobel Smiley and they were the parents of:

        1. Harley Dadswell (see Dadswell Family)

  10. Charles Dadswell was born in March 1834 and baptised on 3 July 1842 in Mayfield.  He was 6 years old in 1841.
