Thomas CROUCH (c1560-1627)

and Eleanor HOGGE (c1565-1617)

Thomas Crouch and Eleanor Hogge married on 3 June 1588 in Warbleton, Sussex.

Thomas Crouch was buried on 9 May 1627 in Warbleton.  It was noted in the burial register that he was an old man.  He left a will dated 24 April 1627 and proved at Lewes on 18 June 1627.  His will described him as a yeoman of Warbleton.  Did Thomas have a brother named Rychard Crouch?

The wife of Thomas Crooch was buried on 20 November 1617 in Warbleton.

The Warbleton registers commence in 1559 and I have checked a transcript for the baptism of Thomas and Eleanor, but neither were found.

Thomas Crouch and Eleanor Hogge had 5 known children:

  1. Mearcie Crouch was baptised on 22 February 1588/9 in Heathfield.  She married Benjamin Waters on 8 April 1611 in Warbleton.

  2. Thomas Crouch was baptised on 7 July 1594 in Heathfield.

Might he have married Margaret Fever on 12 February 1618/9 in Warbleton?  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Warbleton.

Margaret wife of Thomas Crouch was buried on 11 January 1635/6 in Warbleton.

    Thomas was the father of:

    1. Elyzabeth Crooch was baptised on 21 February 1620/1 in Warbleton.

    2. John Crouche was baptised on 8 August 1630 in Warbleton.

    3. Francis Crooch (daughter) was baptised on 17 February 1632/3 in Warbleton and buried there on 23 February 1636/7.

    4. Charles Crouch was baptised on 3 January 1635/6 in Warbleton.  Might he have been buried on 25 February 1640/1 in Warbleton as "the son of Thomas Crouch".

  3. Josias Crouch was baptised on 26 July 1597 in Heathfield.  Might he have been buried on 1 July 1648 in Warbleton?

Josias married Mary Jarvis on 15 January 1620/1 in Heathfield.

A transcript of the Warbleton burial register records that Mary wife of Joseph Crouch was buried on 27 April 1648 - should that be Josias?

Josyas and Mary had the following children:

    1. Thomas Crooche was baptised on 12 January 1621/2 in Warbleton and probably died as an infant, although his burial has not been recorded in a transcript of the Warbleton burial register.

    2. Thomas Crooche was baptised on 5 January 1622/3 in Warbleton.

Thomas married Mary Harmer on 12 or 28 April 1642 in Heathfield.

Mary was the daughter of John Harmer and Margaret Walkett.

      Thomas was the father of:

      1. Robert Crouch was baptised on 13 October 1644 in Warbleton.

      2. Alice Crouch was baptised on 13 October 1644 in Warbleton.

      3. Joseph Crouch was baptised on 4 January 1645/6 in Warbleton.

      4. Richard Crouch was baptised on 19 November 1646 in Warbleton.

    3. Maria Crouch was baptised on 19 September 1624 in Heathfield, and it would also seem she was baptised as Mary Crooch on 6 February 1624/5 in Warbleton.  She may have been buried on 13 December 1684 in Heathfield, as widow Harmor, a pauper.

Mary married William Harmer on 17 August 1643 in Heathfield.

William was the son of John Harmer and Margaret Walkett.  He may have been buried on 10 February 1666/7 in Heathfield.

William and Mary had the following child:

      1. John Harmer was baptised on 9 June 1644 in Heathfield.

      2. William Harmer was baptised on 11 October 1649 in Heathfield.

      3. William Harmer was baptised on 23 March 1650/1 in Heathfield.  He died in 1697.  As William Harman he married Susannah Brooker on 28 May 1672 in Heathfield.  She was baptised on 13 September 1647 in Rotherfield and was the daughter of Will Brooker and Anne Adams.  She died in 1724 in Heathfield.

      4. Mary Harmer was baptised on 28 August 1653 in Heathfield.

      5. Josiah Harmor was baptised on 8 November 1655 and buried there on 22 December 1655.

      6. Ann Harmor was baptised on 28 March 1658 in Heathfield.

      7. Margery Hamer was baptised on 18 April 1661 in Heathfield and buried there on 30 April 1661.

      8. Thomas Harmer was baptised on 18 September 1662 in Heathfield.

      9. Josiah Harmer was baptised on 25 June 1665 in Heathfield.  As Josiah Harman he may have married Ann Turner by licence on 23 June 1693 at St. Anne's in Lewes.  The marriage entry noted that they were both of the parish of St. Anne's.  Their marriage licence was issued on 21 June 1692 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, which noted that he was of Lewes and she was a spinster of the parish of St. Peter in Lewes.

    4. Elizabeth Crooch was baptised on 26 September 1630 in Warbleton.  Did she or either of her cousins (see above and below) marry William Baker on 10 September 1650 in Heathfield?

  4. William Crouch was baptised in 1600 in Heathfield.  A William Crouch was buried on 15 March 1640/1 in Heathfield - I'm not sure which William was buried.

Might he have married Ann Douffield on 21 November 1623 in Warbleton?  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Warbleton.  Might he then have married Elizabeth Vinsen on 3 August 1641 in Heathfield?

Elizabeth wife of William Crouch was buried on 23 February 1651/2 in Heathfield.

William was the father of, but I'm not sure if it was the same William who fathered all the following children:

    1. Elizabeth Crooch was baptised on 6 February 1624/5 in Warbleton.

    2. John Crooch was baptised on 13 April 1627 in Warbleton.

    3. George Crouch was buried on 19 December 1629 in Heathfield.

    4. Mary Crouch was baptised on 12 June 1636 in Heathfield.

    5. William Crouch was baptised on 23 December 1644 in Heathfield and buried there on 19 May 1645.

    6. Thomas Crouch was baptised on 15 November 1646 in Heathfield.

    7. Twins of William Crouch were born on 2 or 12 February 1653/4 in Heathfield.  At least one was a son.  An unbaptised son of William was buried on 3 February 1653/4 in Heathfield.  Mary daughter of William was buried on 14 August 1654 in Heathfield.

  5. Mary Crouch was baptised on 27 November 1606 in Heathfield.  Might she have married John Tyshurst on 28 May 1635 in Heathfield?

Did they also have a daughter Margaret Crouch who married Thomas Isted in 1632?

Margaret a Crouche, widow married Thomas Cokell on 19 August 1570 in Warbleton.

Margarit Crouche married Steven Watter on 27 July 1575 in Warbleton.

Alse Crouche, widow was buried on 19 June 1579 in Warbleton.

Thomas Croche, a child was buried on 14 July 1611 in Warbleton.
