John CROUCH (1764-?)

and Mary VIDLER (1766-?)

 

John Crouch and Mary Vidler married on 20 August 1786 in Burwash, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Crouch was baptised on 17 January 1764 in Burwash, Sussex.  He was the son of John Crouch and Ruth Greenfield.

Mary Vidler may have been baptised as Mary Vitler on 23 September 1766 in Ticehurst, Sussex, and have been the daughter of Thomas Vitler and Abby Pearman.

 

John Crouch and Mary Vidler had 9 known children and possible another:

  1. Abby Crouch was baptised on 3 June 1787 in Burwash.  She died on 10 December 1838 in Ewhurst.

    Before her marriage she had the following son:

    1. Thomas Crouch was baptised on 1 February 1807 in Ewhurst.  As Thomas Crouch of Ewhurst, he married Maria Hawkins on 27 September 1829 in Ewhurst.

    As Abigail Crouch she married Thomas Eldridge on 27 May 1809 in Ewhurst, Sussex.

    Thomas was baptised on 14 June 1778 in Sedlescombe, Sussex and was the son of Thomas Eldridge (1752-1825) and Elizabeth Hiscock (1758-1792).  He died on 5 November 1848 in Ewhurst.

    When the 1841 census was recorded Thomas was said to be a 60 year old carpenter and he was living at Snags Hall in Ewhurst along with his children Louis and Edgar.  Also with the family was 13 year old Aaron Soloman and 35 year old Henry Newble.

    Thomas and Abby had the following children:

    1. John Eldridge was baptised on 26 November 1809 in Ewhurst.

    2. Eliza Eldridge was born about 1811.

    3. Jane Eldridge was baptised on 7 February 1813 in Ewhurst.

    4. William Eldridge was baptised on 17 December 1815 in Ewhurst.

    5. Maria Eldridge was baptised on 15 February 1818 in Ewhurst.

    6. Lois Eldridge was baptised on 24 December 1820 in Ewhurst.  In 1841 she was a 20 year old dressmaker.

    7. Mary Ann Eldridge was baptised on 29 January 1826 in Ewhurst.

    8. Edgar Eldridge was baptised on 27 January 1828 in Ewhurst.  In 1841 he was 13 years old.

  2. Anne Crouch was baptised on 27 December 1788 in Burwash.

    Ann married Jesse Hawkins on 13 December 1808 in Burwash.

    Jesse was baptised on 27 December 1789 in Burwash and was the son of Jesse Hawkins and Sarah Watson.

    When the 1841 census was recorded, 50 year old Ann was a labouring woman and she was living with her daughter Hannah in the Square in Burwash.

    Jesse and Ann had the following children:

    1. Edmund Hawkins was born on 20 June 1811 and baptised on 25 June 1811 in Burwash.

    2. Winefred Hawkins was baptised on 11 June 1813 in Burwash.

    3. Mary Hawkins was baptised on 19 May 1815 in Burwash.

    4. Frances Hawkins was baptised on 17 August 1817 in Burwash.

    5. Thomas Hawkins was baptised on 27 June 1819 in Burwash.

    6. Ruth Hawkins was baptised on 1 July 1821 in Burwash.

    7. Anne Hawkins was baptised on 27 December 1823 in Burwash.

    8. Hannah Hawkins was baptised on 2 April 1827 in Burwash.  She was 13 years old in 1841.

    9. Mary Maria Hawkins was baptised on 19 June 1831 in Burwash.

  3. Mary Crouch was baptised on 9 May 1790 in Burwash.  She most probably died aged 25 years and was buried on 6 February 1816 in Burwash.

    Mary married Henry Flemming on 17 May 1814 in Burwash.

    Henry was baptised on 14 April 1793 in Burwash and was the son of John Fleming (c1759-1839) and Ann Geere (1758-1827).

  4. Philadelphia Crouch was baptised on 23 October 1791 in Burwash.  She may have married Samuel Croft on 3 May 1809 in Brightling, or William Forward on 9 October 1810 in Ticehurst.

  5. John Crouch may have been part of this family.  He was born about 1794/5 in Burwash, although his baptism does not appear in the baptism register around about that time.

    John married Frances Barham on 8 February 1814 in Ewhurst.  He was then of Udimore.

    Frances was born about 1792 in Bethersden, Kent.

    When the 1841 census was recorded the couple were living at Suckwish Farm in Brightling.  He was then said to be a 45 year old agricultural labourer and Frances's age was recorded as 50 years.  With them on census night were 5 children.

    John and Frances had the following children:

    1. James Crouch was baptised on 10 April 1814 in Rye.

    2. John Crouch was baptised on 21 May 1820 in Brightling.

    3. Maria Crouch was baptised on 22 August 1824 in Brightling.

    4. Edmund Crouch was baptised on 20 November 1825 in Brightling.

    5. Abigail Crouch was baptised on 24 February 1828 in Brightling.

    6. Mary Ann Crouch was baptised on 29 July 1832 in Brightling.  She died in 1891.  Mary Ann married George Sands.

  6. Edmund Crouch was baptised on 26 July 1796 in Burwash.

  7. Thomas Crouch was baptised on 9 September 1798 in Burwash.  Thomas married Sarah Masters in 1820.  (They have their own page.)

  8. William Crouch was baptised on 9 February 1800 in Burwash.

  9. James Crouch was baptised on 31 October 1802 in Burwash.

  10. George Crouch was baptised on 8 April 1805 in Burwash.

    George married Mary Weaver by banns on 23 April 1824 in Bodiam.  He was then from Ewhurst.  When the 1851 census was recorded the couple and 3 of their children were living at Colliers Green in Ewhurst.  George was then a 46 year old agricultural labourer and Mary was 49.  He gave his place of birth as Burwash and she as Bodiam.

    Mary was baptised on 21 June 1801 in Bodiam and was the daughter of James Weaver and Elizabeth.  She died between 1852 and 1854.

    George married for a second time to Philadelphia Whyborn on 20 February 1856 in Ewhurst.  As Philadelphia Read she had previously married William Wybourn on 10 March 1821 in Seddlescombe, Sussex.

    George and Mary had the following children:

    1. George Crouch was baptised on 5 December 1824 in Bodiam.  In 1851 he was an unmarried 25 year old agricultural labourer and he was living at home with his parents.

    2. Harriet Crouch was baptised on 6 December 1829 in Ewhurst.

    3. Ellen Crouch was born about 1832 in Ewhurst.

    4. Eliza Crouch was baptised on 4 May 1834 in Ewhurst.

    5. Sarah Ann Crouch was born about 1836 in Ewhurst.  She was 15 years old in 1851 and living at home.

    6. Henry John Crouch was baptised on 14 June 1838 in Ewhurst.  In 1851 he was a 12 year old agricultural labourer.
