Thomas CRIPPS

Thomas Cripps
and
Mary Wales
were my 9x Great
Grandparents. (Click
here
to see their place in my pedigree chart.) They married on 7 October 1634 in Bolney, Sussex.
Thomas next married Mary Gratwick, widow on 31 January 1658/9 in
Shermanbury, Sussex.
Thomas Cripps’s date and place of
birth/baptism are unknown, to me. He was the son of
Richard Crips
(1576-1652)
and Jane Gratwick
(1580-?). He was buried on 25 November 1670 in Cowfold, Sussex.
His name was recorded as Thomas Crips in the burial register.
Thomas signed the 1641/2 Protestation Return for Cowfold.
Mary Wales was baptised on 19 February 1614/5 in Bolney. She
was the daughter of
Humphrey Wales
(1579-1645) and Alice Gray. She
was buried on 16 October 1657 in Cowfold. The burial register recorded
that she was the wife of Thomas Cripps.
Mary's date and place of birth and baptism and her previous marriage
are unknown, to me. She was buried on 10 February 1684/5 in Cowfold
and it was noted in the burial register that she was Mary Crips widow
from West Grinstead, Sussex.

Wales had the following known children:

Humphrey Crips was baptised on 4 October 1635 in Cowfold and buried
there on 1 April 1639.

Mary Crips was baptised on 25 February 1636/7 in Cowfold and buried
there on 27 February 1636/7.

John Crips was baptised on 11 February 1637/8 in Cowfold. He
left a
will which was proved in 1675. He was buried on 21 July 1675 in
Cowfold and the burial register recorded that he was of West Grinstead.

Thomas Crips was baptised on 25 March 1640 in Cowfold. He
was mentioned in his brother John's will. He may have been
buried on 22 February 1687/8 in West Grinstead, Sussex. The burial
register recorded that he was Thomas Cripps, senior. He may
have had a son who was buried on 20 July 1681 in West Grinstead, as
Thomas Cripps, junior.

Mary Crips was baptised on 28 February 1641/2 in Cowfold and buried
there on 1 July 1660. It was noted in the burial register that she
was the daughter of Thomas Cripps of Shermanbury.

Jane Cripps was mentioned in her brother John's will.
Jane married Drew Mitchell on September 1662 in Shermanbury, Sussex.
It was noted in the marriage register that she was the daughter of
Thomas Crips, whilst he was of West Grinstead.
Drew was the son of Henry Michell and Elizabeth
Cheale (?-1666). His will was dated 20 August and proved
on 3 October 1667.
Drew and Jane had 3 known children:

Thomas Mitchell was baptised on 10 September 1663 in West
Grinstead. He was mentioned in his Uncle John Cripps will.

Ann Mitchell was baptised on 20 April 1665 in West Grinstead.
She was mentioned in her Uncle John Cripps will.

Jane Mitchell was baptised on 17 January 1666/7 in West Grinstead.
She was mentioned in her Uncle John Cripps will.

Cripps, my 8x Great Grandmother, married
Richard Woolven in 1666. (They have their own page.)
Jane and Ann may have been baptised in Cowfold or Shermanbury, however,
there is a gap in the Cowfold registers from 1642-1648 and in Shermanbury
from 1641-53.

An unbaptised child of Thomas Crips was buried on 7 September 1648
in Cowfold.

Elizabeth Cripps was baptised on 16 November 1653 in Shermanbury
and buried there on 2 December 1653.

Richard Cripps was born and baptised on 24 October 1654 in
Shermanbury. He was buried in Cowfold on 28 October 1654 and it was
noted that his father was from Shermanbury.

Suzan Cripps was born and baptised on 24 October 1654 in
Shermanbury. She was also buried on 28 October 1654.
Thomas Crips and Mary had
1 known child:

James Cripps was baptised on 6 March 1660 in Shermanbury. He
was under 21 in 1675.
