Roger CRYPES
(c1550-1620)
and Johanna THORNDEN (c1550-1609)

Roger Crypes
and
Johanna Thornden
were most probably my 11x Great Grandparents.
(Click
here to see their place in my pedigree chart.) They married on 6
August 1574 in Cowfold, Sussex.
Roger Crypes date and place of
birth/baptism are unknown, to me. He was buried on 22 May 1620 in
Cowfold and his name was recorded in the burial register as Roger Cripps.
In 1604 he was a Churchwarden of Cowfold. Might his father, or perhaps
a brother, have been buried as Rycus Cripes on 7 January 1559 in
Cowfold? A Richard Cryppes of Cowfold left a will dated 3
January 1558 and proved at Lewes on 18 April 1559 (ref. Register 3 262) -
I will order a copy of this will next time I'm at the ESRO. Or was his father,
and/or brother, one of two Thomas Cripes buried on 19
August 1584 or 17 June 1594 in Cowfold?
Johanna Thornden's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to
me. She was buried on 5 December 1609 in Cowfold. The burial
register recorded her name as Joane wife of Roger Crips.
Roger Crypes and Johanna
Thornden may have had the following children:
-
Joan Crepes married Walter Dente on 21 September 1595 in
Cowfold.
-
Ricardus
Crepes, my 10x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 3 September 1576
in Cowfold. Neither of his parents names were recorded in the
baptism register. He married
Jane Gratwick
in 1600. (They have their own page.)
-
John Cripes was baptised on 27 October 1578 in Cowfold.
Neither of his parents were named in the baptism register.
-
Ann Crippes married John Parson on 28 November 1598 in West
Grinstead.
-
There may have been a son named Roger Cripes who married Ann
Chatfeild by licence on 2 December 1611 in Brighton, Sussex.
Roger was then said to be of Cowfold. Their marriage licence was
issued on 18 November 1611 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, which also
recorded that Ann was a widow of Brighton, whilst Roger was a yeoman of
Cowfold.
Roger may have had a brother, or perhaps a son by an earlier marriage:
Thomas Cripes married Bennett King on 25 September 1586
in Cowfold.
Bennet Crips, widow, was buried on 4 June 1625 in Cowfold.
Thomas and Bennet may have had the following children:
-
Roger Cripes was baptised on 5 April 1595 in Cowfold. Only
his father's name was recorded in the baptism register. He may have
married Joan Smith on 29 January 1628 in West Grinstead, Sussex.
-
Elizabeth Crips was baptised on 22 September 1603 in Cowfold.
Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register. She or
perhaps her mother was buried on 24 August 1615 in Cowfold. The
burial register only records that Elizabeth Crippes was buried.
-
Joan Cripps married William Raynolds on 1 May 1620 in
Cowfold.
-
Susan Crips married Stephen Sumner on 21 September 1624 in
Cowfold. She was said to be the daughter of Bennet Crips,
widow.
