Abraham CORD (1629-1689)

and Elizabeth (c1630-1661)

and Mary JONES (c1640-?)

 

Abraham Cord and Elizabeth were my 9x Great Grandparents.  They may have married before or about 1659.  No possible marriage has been found for them in the Sussex Family History Group's marriage index, nor the IGI.  As a widower, Abraham Cord married Mary Jones on 6 April 1665 in Mountfield, Sussex.  They were both of Mountfield.

St. Bartholomews's, Burwash, circa 1907, from: http://www.theweald.org/P5.asp?PID=5754BurwshAbraham Cord was baptised on 11 January 1628/9  in Burwash, Sussex, as Abraham Coarde.  He was the son of 5 202 Abraham Corde (1583-?) and 5 202 Susan Barber.  He died at Whatlington and was buried on 15 May 1689 in Mountfield, Sussex.  I have not found a Will for Abraham.

Elizabeth’s date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 19 September 1661 in Mountfield.

Mary Jones’s date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  After Abraham's death, Mary Cord may have married Elias Purfield on 18 February 1690 in Whatlington, Sussex.  She was then of Whatlington.

 

Abraham Cord and Elizabeth had 2 known children:

  1. Thomas Cord was born on 26 September 1659 in Mountfield.  (His mother’s name was not recorded in the parish register.)

  2. Susanna Cord, my 8x Great Grandmother, was born on 14 March 1660/1 in Mountfield.  (Her mother’s name was not recorded in the parish register.)  She married John Tompsett in 1686.  (They have their own page.)

 

Abraham Cord and Mary Jones had 8 known children:

  1. Jane Cord was born on 13 February and baptised on 20 February 1665/6 in Mountfield.

  2. Mercy Cord was born on 1 May and baptised on 27 May 1667 in Mountfield.

  3. Anne Cord was born 20 December and baptised on 25 December 1668 in Mountfield.  She was buried on 17 June 1671 in Whatlington.

  4. Patience Cord was born 3 November and baptised on 17 November 1670 in Mountfield.  She married Thomas Sander on 21 May 1695 in Whatlington.  He was then of Westfield, Sussex.

  5. Abraham Cord was baptised on 20 January 1674 in Whatlington.

  6. Mary Cord was baptised on 12 December 1675 in Whatlington.  She married Daniel Eldridge on 7 July 1702 in Whatlington.  She was then of Whatlington and he of Battle, Sussex.

  7. Sarah Cord was born and baptised on 9 December 1677 in Whatlington.  She may have married John Robins on 17 February 1703/4 in Mountfield, Sussex.  She was then said to be of Northiam, Sussex.

  8. John Cord was born on 19 February and baptised on 22 February 1680 in Whatlington.  He married Ann Holman on 16 July 1706 in Burwash, Sussex.  He was then of Whatlington.  John and Ann had 5 known children:

    1. A stillborn child was buried on 12 August 1707 in Whatlington.

    2. Anne Cord was born on 25 October and baptised on 31 October 1708 in Whatlington.

    3. Abraham Cord was born and baptised on 27 June 1710 in Whatlington and buried there on 23 January 1710/11.

    4. John Cord (1718-?)

    5. Elizabeth Cord (1720-?)
