Henry COOPER (1789-1865)

and Philadelphia WILLARD (1795-1847)

Henry Cooper and Philadelphia Willard married on 31 July 1814 in Sullington, Sussex.  At the time he was a bachelor and she a spinster of Storrington, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Mitchell and Lucy Mitchell.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Henry Cooper was baptised on 18 October 1789 in Storrington, Sussex.  He was the son of John Cooper and Mary.  He died aged 80 years and was buried on 8 January 1865 in Storrington.

Philadelphia Willard was baptised on 31 May 1795 in West Chiltington, Sussex.  She was the daughter of William Willard (1757-?) and Philadelphia Kidd.  She died aged 52 years at Oldfield Common and was buried on 8 August 1847 in Storrington.

On 19 April 1819 a Removal Order was issued to Henry, wife Philadelphia and children, 4 year old William, 2 year old Harriet and 7 month old George, from Storrington to Sullington, or vice versa.  When the 1841 census was recorded the family were living in Storrington.  At the time of the 1861 census, Henry was living at Old Field Cottage, Storrington, along with widowed daughter and 3 grandsons.  He was then a 76 year old bailiff who gave his place of birth as Storrington.

Henry Cooper and Philadelphia Willard had 9 known children:

  1. William Cooper was baptised on 5 February 1815 in Storrington, at which time his father was a labourer from Roundabouts.  He may have died aged 67 years in the third quarter of 1881.

William married Charlotte Tribe by banns on 24 October 1835 in Pulborough, Sussex.  He was then of Storrington and she of Pulborough.  The witnesses to the marriage were Mary Cooper and Charles Balchin.

    Charlotte was born about 1816.

William and Charlotte had 4 known children:

    1. George Cooper was born about 1836.

    2. Thomas Cooper was born about 1837.

    3. William Cooper was born about 1839 in Storrington.  He married Emily.  She was born about 1845 in Bishops Waltham, Hampshire.  When the 1881 census was recorded the family were living in Sea Horse Street in Alverstoke, Hampshire, and William was then a brewer's foreman.  The couple had 5 known children:

      1. Henry Cooper was born about 1868 in Gosport, Hampshire.  When the 1881 census was recorded he was a 13 year old Blacksmith's Boy, and the eldest of his siblings living at home.

      2. George F Cooper was born about 1869 in Gosport.  He was a 12 year old Scholar in 1881.

      3. Eliza Annie Cooper was born in 1875 in Gosport (fourth quarter).  She was a 5 year old Scholar in 1881.

      4. Lydia Harriet Cooper was born in 1878 in Gosport (second quarter).  She was a 3 year old Scholar when the 1881 census was recorded.

      5. John H Cooper was born about 1880 in Gosport.  He was 10 months old at the time of the 1881 census.

Also with the family in 1881 was their 1 year old niece, Emily K Wittenham.

    4. Harriot Cooper was born about 1841.

  2. Harriet Cooper was born baptised on 11 July 1816 in Storrington.

  3. George Cooper was bapitsed on 1 March in Storrington.  He probably died aged 84 years in the first quarter of 1903.  It would seem he was still living in the parental home when the 1841 census was recorded and he was then a labourer.  He married twice.  Firstly in the fourth quarter of 1840 in the Midhurst registration to Ann.  Ann was born about 1820 in Billingshurst.

George and Ann had the following children:

    1. Oliver Cooper was born about 1840 in Billingshurst.

    2. Jane Cooper was born about 1845 in Billingshurst.

    3. Caroline Cooper was born about 1846 in Storrington (possibly the third quarter).  She was 15 and living at home in 1861.  Caroline married Alfred Clements in the third quarter of 1867 in the Thakeham district.  When the 1881 census was recorded the couple and their 10 year old son were living at Charmans in West Chiltington and Alfred was then a shoemaker.  He had been born about 1845 in Thakeham.  They had 2 known children:

George then married Sarah in about 1855.  She was born about 1807 in Washington, Sussex.  When the 1861 census was recorded the family were living at Old Field Common in Storrington and George was a farm labourer.

  4. Caroline Cooper was baptised on 5 November 1820 and then again on 5 August 1821 in Storrington, at which time her father was a labourer from Roundabouts.  The Storrington burial register does not record the burial of an infant Caroline.  She married William Streeter on 6 May 1854 in West Chiltington, Sussex.  He died before the recording of the 1861 census, as Caroline was then a widow living with her father at Old Field Cottage.  They had 1 known son:

    1. William Streeter was born about 1855 in Billingshurst, Sussex.

  5. John Cooper was baptised on 10 November 1822 in Storrington.  He died on 6 May 1902 in Storrington.  John married Mary Feast in the third quarter of 1841.  She was born about 1825 in Beeding and died on 11 September 1897 in Storrington.  When the 1861 census was recorded the family were living at Roundabouts in Storrington, and John was then a labourer.  The couple and their son Walter, daughter Jane and 1 year old grandson, George H Cooper who had been born in Portslade, were still living at Roundabouts when the 1881 census was recorded and John was then a farm servant.  They had the following children:
