William COOMBER (1840-1916)

and Elizabeth MANSBRIDGE (c1843-1916)

 

William Comber and Elizabeth Mansbridge married on 15 December 1864 in West Hoathly, Sussex.  (William and Elizabeth were not my direct ancestors.  Elizabeth was the niece of my 3x Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Mansbridge (1808-c1880).  I also have earlier Comber ancestors from Ardingly, but don't know, yet, if there is any link.  My Comber line comes to a halt with Francis Comber born about 1610.  I have listed William's ancestors at the end of this page.)

William Comber was baptised on 3 January 1841 in West Hoathly.  He was the son of John Comber (1796-1842) and Sarah Mason (1798-1876).  His father and elder brother were Sawyers.  William's surname was recorded as Coomber in the 1861 and 1881 census and his occupation at both times was given as Lath Cleaver (which I assume was preparing strips of wood for constructing walls and ceilings ready for a plasterer to cover).  When the 1861 census was recorded he was living in West Hoathly along with his widowed mother and elder sister, who were both Bakers.  William was buried on 1 July 1916.

Elizabeth Mansbridge was born about 1843 in Bolney, Sussex.  She was the daughter of William Mansbridge (1792-1874) and Sarah Walder (1799-1878).  She was an 8 year old Scholar in 1851 living with her parents.  By 1861 she was probably the 19 year old Servant living in the home of Thomas Sewell (think that's his surname) at Bolney Cottage in Bolney.  Elizabeth died in 1916.

When the 1881 census was recorded the family were living in West Hoathly.

 

William Coomber and Elizabeth Mansbridge had 8 known children:

  1. Jane Coomber was born about 1869 in West Hoathly.

  2. Elizabeth Coomber was born about 1871 in West Hoathly.

  3. William Ephraim Coomber was born/baptised on 29 October 1871 in West Hoathly.  He died in 1915.  He married Constance Holman.  She was born in 1874 and died in 1962.

  4. Harry Coomber was born/baptised on 9 March 1873 in West Hoathly.  He died in 1946.

  5. Mary Coomber was born about 1875 in West Hoathly.  When the 1881 census was recorded she was staying in the home of her Uncle Peter Mansbridge.

  6. Robert Coomber was born about 1876 in West Hoathly.  He died in 1961.

  7. Arthur Coomber was born/baptised on 27 February 1877 in West Hoathly.  He died in 1954.

  8. Sarah Coomber was born about 1879 in West Hoathly.
