William COMBER (1779-1857)
and Susanna HYATT (1784-?)
Susannah Hyatt married on 13 October 1804 at St. George in Hanover
Square, Westminster, London. (They were not my direct ancestors.)
William Comber may have been baptised on 1 August 1779 in East
Grinstead, Sussex and have been the son of
William Comber (1759-?)
and Sarah Young
(c1760-?). (William, senior was most probably the son of Dorothy
Comber (1737-1835).) William left a very brief will dated 26 May
1849, which was proved in London on 19 November 1857. William was then
of Hollybush in East Grinstead. He appointed his son John Comber
and daughter Mary Ann Simmonds, wife of Thomas Simmonds as
joint executors of his will. (I will eventually transcribe his will
and include that transcript in this site.)
Susanna Hiat was born on 1 September 1784 and baptised on 5 October
1784 in Flaunden, Hertfordshire. She was the daughter of James Hiat
and Susanna Hatton. She was mentioned in her husband's will,
but not by name. She may have died before the recording of the 1861
When the 1841 census was recorded there was a 55 year old William Comber
living in Holly Bush Cottage in East Grinstead along with 20 year old
Harriet Comber. William was then a farmer. When the 1851
census was recorded he may have been a 72 year old farmer of 8 acres living
at Hollybush in East Grinstead, along with his 65 year old wife Susannah,
who had been born in Herefordshire, and their servant 25 year old unmarried
Elizabeth Wheeler who had been born in East Grinstead. In 1851
William gave his place of birth as East Grinstead and his age in the census
implies he was born in 1779. There was a
born in East Grinstead in 1783, but he may have married Mary in about 1810
and had children baptised in East Grinstead from 1811-1819.
Note: 1779 and 1783 William's may both have been the grandsons on
William Comber and Susanna had
8 known children:
Mary Ann Comber was born on 26 March 1806 and baptised on 11 July
1806 in Latimer, Buckinghamshire. She was appointed a joint executor
of her father's will. She married Thomas Simmonds and in 1857
they were living in Brighton, Sussex. I have not found their
marriage recorded in the Sussex marriage index or the IGI. When the
1851 census was recorded Thomas and Mary Ann were living at 2 Church Place
in Brighton and he was then a 45 year old fly master who gave his place of
birth as Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. Their eldest child at home as 19
years old, therefore, the couple married sometime before 1832.
Benjamin Lucas Comber was baptised on 27 April 1810 in East
Grinstead and buried there on 21 June 1810.
Charlotte Comber was baptised on 14 March 1813 in East Grinstead.
James Hyatt Coomber was baptised on 19 April 1815 in East
John Millson Comber was baptised on 15 March 1819 in East
Grinstead. He was a appointed a joint executor of his father's will.
When the 1861 census was recorded John Wilson Comber was 41 years
old and living at 18 Brighton Terrace in Lambeth, Surrey, where he was a
victualler and fly master. He was then said to be married but his
wife was not at the same address on census night. John's household
then comprised of 7 year old son John Wilson Comber and 24 year old
housekeeper Jane Hughes Luke who was unmarried.
Henry Comber was baptised on 13 December 1820 in East Grinstead.
Joseph Coomber was baptised on 12 February 1823 in East Grinstead.
Susannah Comber was baptised on 6 April 1825 in East Grinstead.
