Thomas COMBER (1700-1774)

and Ann FAIRHALL (1704-1766)

Thomas Comber and Ann Fairhall married on 26 February 1733/4 at the parish church of St. Anne’s in Lewes, Sussex.  At the time of their marriage Thomas was of Balcombe and Ann of Lindfield.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Thomas was the brother of my 6x Great Grandmother, Ann Comber.)

Thomas Comber was born on 29 April and baptised on 30 April 1700 in Ardingly, Sussex.  He was the fourth son and fifth child of John Comber (1660-1729) and Judith White (1666-1726).  He was buried 27 July 1774 in Balcombe, Sussex.  He was a yeoman.  He along with his brother William were named as joint executors of their father's will, by which they were to jointly receive the residue of their father's goods and chattels.  In 1755 he was a Churchwarden at Balcombe.  His will was dated 12 May 1766 and proved on 14 January 1775.

Ann Fairhall was born in 1704 in Lindfield, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Henry Fairhall and Elizabeth Brett.  Ann died aged 61 years and was buried on 4 July 1766 in Balcombe.

Thomas Comber and Ann Fairhall had 6 known children:

  1. Thomas Cumber was baptised on 10 July 1735 in Balcombe.  His parent's names were not recorded in the baptism register.  He was mentioned in his father's will and that of his Uncle William Comber.

As Thomas Coomber he married Elizabeth Burt, widow by banns on 11 April 1763.  At the time Thomas was a bachelor.  The witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Burt and Henry Goldsmith.

Thomas and Elizabeth had 1 known daughter:

    1. Anne Comber was baptised on 28 May 1764 in Balcombe.

Ann married Richard Tester by banns on 17 October 1791 in Balcombe.  The witnesses were John Rasstrigg and Thomas Pirdman.

Richard may have been baptised on 27 January 1760 the son of Richard Tester and Elizabeth Wilde, or on 22 March 1761 the son of William Tester and Elizabeth Illman.  Both baptisms were in Balcombe.

Richard and Ann had 7 known children:

      1. Mary Tester (1792-?)

      2. Ann Tester (1794-?)

      3. Sarah Tester (1798-?)

      4. Thomas Tester (1801-?)

      5. Elizabeth Tester (1803-?)

      6. Richard Tester (1806-?)

      7. Charlotte Tester (1809-?)

Did Elizabeth previously marry John Burt on 20 June 1749 in Balcombe as Elizabeth Doust?  John may have been born 1718 in Balcombe and died after 1758.  He may have been the son of Walter Burt and Ann Peacock.  Elizabeth may have been the daughter of Thomas Doust and Mary Virgoe who married in 1729.

(An Elizabeth Burt was born in Ardingly on 27 March 1738 (baptised 9 April 1738) and was the daughter of James Burt (?-1773) and Mary Pilbeam (1703-1765).  But this Elizabeth Burt died aged 30 years and was buried on 10 May 1768 in Ardingly.)

  2. John Cumber was baptised on 3 July 1737 in Balcombe.  His parent's names were not recorded in the baptism register.  He was the executor of his father's will.  He was also mentioned in the will of his Uncle William Comber.  He died aged 76 years and was buried on 15 January 1814 in Balcombe.  He left a will.

John married Hannah Isted by banns on 30 July 1772 in Balcombe.  At the time they were both of Balcombe.  The witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Coomber and Henry Goldsmith.

Hannah died on 18 June 1800 aged 51 years and was buried on 21 June 1800 in Balcombe.  Was she baptised on 17 November 1748 in East Grinstead, Sussex, the daughter of Henry Isted and Mary?

John and Hannah had 5 known children:

    1. John Comber was baptised on 11 June 1773 in Balcombe and buried there on 18 May 1780.

    2. Sarah Comber was baptised on 13 October 1774 in Balcombe.  She had an illegitimate son:

      1. Thomas Comber was baptised on 9 December 1792 in Balcombe.

Thomas married Sarah Dancey by banns on 27 March 1815 in Cuckfield, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Cuckfield.

Thomas and Sarah had the following son:

        1. Charles Comber was born about 1825/6 in Brighton.

Charles married Emma Pilbeam in the second quarter of 1850 in Brighton.

Emma was baptised on 8 August 1824 at St. Nicholas in Brighton and was the daughter of John Pilbeam (1791-1842) and Martha Mockford (1798-?).

When the 1851 census was recorded the couple were living at 16 Mount Sion Place in Brighton.  Charles was then a 25 year old carpenter and Emma was 26.  They were sharing the property with 53 year old Martha Rhoades and her 2 sons, 15 year old George Pilbeam and 12 year old Walter Pilbeam.

Charles and Emma had the following son:

          1. George Isaac Comber was born in the first quarter of 1871 in Brighton.  He married Alice Charlotte Lansdown in the first quarter of 1894 in the Marylebone registration district.  They had the following son:

            1. Douglas George Comber was born in the second quarter of 1897 in the Hendon registration district.  He married Jessie Taylor in the second quarter of 1927 in the Islington registration district.

Did Sarah marry William Bannister by licence on 16 October 1794 in West Hoathly?  She was then of Balcombe and he of West Hoathly.

    3. Thomas Comber was born about 1776 and was of 'Stonehall' in Balcombe.  In 1841 he was 65 years old.

Thomas married Elizabeth Tester by licence on 23 November 1799 in Balcombe.  The witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Gardnere, Thomas Comber and Thomas Haselgrove.

Elizabeth may have been baptised on 18 February 1781 in Balcombe and have been the daughter of William Tester and Elizabeth.  Thomas and Elizabeth had 8 known children.

    4. Ann Comber, a twin, was baptised on 19 July 1779 in Balcombe.

    5. Mary Comber, a twin, was baptised on 19 July 1779 in Balcombe.

  3. Elizabeth Comber was baptised on 5 February 1738/9 in Balcombe.  Her parent's names were not recorded in the baptism register.  She died aged 91 years on 9 October 1828.  She was mentioned in the 1778 will of her Uncle William Comber, by which she inherited many of his household goods after the death of her Aunt.

Elizabeth married John Newnham in 1763.  (They have their own page.)

  4. Ann Comber was baptised privately on 18 January 1738/9 in Balcombe.  She was a twin and both her parent's names were recorded in the baptism.

  5. Sarah Comber was baptised privately on 18 January 1738/9 in Balcombe.  She was a twin and both her parent's names were recorded in the baptism.  She may have died in infancy.

  6. Sarah Coomber was baptised on 3 June 1745 in Balcombe and buried there on 10 June 1747.  Her father's name was mentioned against both her baptism and burial.
