Stephen COMBER (1758/68-1835/40)
and Ann BARTLEY (1767-1841)

Stephen Comber
married Ann
Bartley by banns on 6 September 1792 at St. Nicholas in
Brighton, Sussex. The witnesses to the marriage were Lisabeth
Tirrell and Ba Jeffery. The banns were published at
St. Nicholas on 13, 19 and 26 August 1792. (They were not my direct ancestors. Stephen
may have been the grand nephew of my 6x Great Grandmother, Anne Comber.)
Stephen Comber
may have been baptised on 20 August 1758 in Slaugham, Sussex, the son of
Stephen Comber (1733-1798) and
Elizabeth Mitchell
(?-1766) and have died aged 78 years and buried on 19 November 1835 in
Slaugham. Or he may have been baptised on 21 February 1768 in
Slaugham, the son of John Comber and Sarah (possibly Sarah
Waters) and have been buried on 4 February 1840 in Beeding,
Sussex.
Ann Bartley
was baptised on 15 May 1767 in Slaugham. She was the daughter of
Richard Bartley and Ann Hounsame (1743-?). She died aged 72
years in Beeding and was buried on 4 February 1841 in Slaugham.
Stephen Comber and Ann Bartley had 10 known children:

John Comber
was baptised on 5 July 1795 in Slaugham. He married
Sarah Wood
on 6 May 1816 in Slaugham. (They have their own page.)

Stephen Comber was baptised on 3 September 1796 in Slaugham and
buried there as an infant on 6 September 1796.
-
Ann Bartley Comber was baptised on 26 October 1797 in Slaugham.
Ann married Henry Vaughan by banns on 2 July 1815 in Slaugham.
They were both then of Slaugham. The witnesses to the marriage were
William Briggs and Agnes Martindale.
Henry was born
about 1792 in Cuckfield, Sussex. He may have been the son of
William Vaughan and
Zilpha Alfrey (1753-?).
When the 1841 and 1851 census were
recorded the family were living in Handcross in the parish of Slaugham and
Henry was an agricultural labourer.
Henry and Ann had 16 known
children:

Ann Vaughan was baptised on 20 October 1816 in Slaugham.

Henry Vaughan was baptised on 30 July 1820 in Slaugham. When
the 1881 census was recorded he was a 61 year old jobbing gardener living
in Belmont Park Road in Hornsey, Middlesex along with his 59 year old
wife, Frances, and 3 children.

Sarah Vaughan was baptised on 18 February 1821 in Slaugham.

John Vaughan was baptised on 27 July 1821 in Slaugham.

William Vaughan was born in 1823 in Cuckfield and baptised on 15
June 1823 in Slaugham. He died aged 73 years in the second quarter
of 1897. When the 1841 census was recorded he was a 15 year old and
the eldest of his siblings at home. In the 1851 census he may have
been a 27 year old farm labourer living at Balcombe Down in Balcombe,
along with wife Mary aged 23 years, who was born in Worth, and 2
children:

Frederick Fielding Vaughan was baptised on 2 April 1848 in
Balcombe.

Mary Mercy Vaughan was baptised on 7 April 1850 in Balcombe.
William may have married Mary Hills on 1 November 1846 in
Worth.
Mary was baptised on 9 March 1828 in Worth and was the
daughter of Mercy Hill.
When the 1881 census was recorded
William and Mary were living at 2 Stone Cottages, London Road in Keymer,
Sussex and he was the a general labourer. Also with at that time was
their 3 year old Granddaughter Fanny Stenning and 37 year old
lodger David Wheeler.

Richard Vaughan was baptised on 18 October 1840 in Slaugham.
When the 1841 census was recorded he may have been a 15 year old servant
in the home of Thomas Cooper a broom maker at Oak Cottage in
Slaugham.

Maria Vaughan was born about 1828 in Cuckfield and baptised on 18
October 1840 in Slaugham. In 1841 she was a 13 year old. At
the time of the 1851 census she was an unmarried 23 year old living in the
parental home.

Frederic Vaughan was born about 1829 and baptised on 18 October
1840 in Slaugham. Fred was a 12 year old at the time of the
1841 census. When the 1881 census was recorded he was the
Independent Minister of Broadwindsor Stoke Abbott and Venn Chapels, living
in Chapel Street, Broadwindsor, along with his 40 year old wife George
Ann (that's what's in the census index), 3 children and a general
domestic servant.

Stephen Vaughan was born about 1831/2 in Cuckfield and baptised on
18 October 1840 in Slaugham. In 1841 he was a 10 year old.
When the 1851 census was recorded he was 19 year old agricultural labourer
living with his parents.

James Vaughan was born about 1833 in
Staplefield, Sussex. He was an 8 year at the time of the 1841
census. (He was NOT the

Field on 22 July 1854 in Slaugham.)

Joseph Vaughan was born about 1835 and baptised on 18 October 1840
in Slaugham. He was a 6 year old in 1841.
-
Charity Vaughan was born about 1836 and baptised on 18 October 1840
in Slaugham. In 1841 she was a 5 year old.
Charity married
Samuel Merritt on 24 April 1858 in Slaugham.
When the 1881
census was recorded the family were living in East Street, Storrington,
Sussex and Samuel was a blacksmith. He was born about 1837 in
Brighton.
The couple had at least 6 children:

Alfred Merritt was born about 1859 in Ashington, Sussex. He
was a 22 year old bricklayer's labourer in 1881.

Samuel Merritt was born about 1865 in Storrington. He was a
16 year old farm labourer in 1881.
-
Charles Merritt was born about 1867 in Storrington. In 1881
he was a 14 year old carter boy.
-
George Merritt was born about 1869 in Storrington. He was a
12 year old scholar in 1881.
-
Edwin Merritt was born about 1875 in Storrington. In 1881 he
was a 6 year old scholar.

Harriett Merritt was born about 1877 in Storrington. She was
4 years old when the 1881 census was recorded.

Richard Benjamin Vaughan was born about 1839/40 in Slaugham and baptised on
18 October 1840 in Slaugham. He died in 1927 in Ferntree Gully, Victoria,
Australia. In 1841 he was 2 years old. At
the time of the 1851 census he was an 11 year old living at home.
Richard
married Ann Williams in 1871 in Brighton, Victoria, Australia.
Ann died aged 60 years in 1911 in Scoresby, Victoria. Her parents were then
named as Thomas Williams (c1826-?) and Hannah Strickland
(c1830-?). They
had married in Victoria in 1851. Ann was born in 1851 in
Collingwood, Victoria.
The couple had 1 known son:

Frederick Benjamin Vaugham was born in 1880 in Oakleigh, Victoria
and died in 1961 in Sale, Victoria. He married Frances Elizabeth
Butler in 1904 in Ferntree Gully, Victoria. She was born in 1878
in Yan Yean, Victoria and was the daughter of Thomas Butler and
Frances Elizabeth Holmes. Frederick and Frances had 7 children:

Eliza Vaughan was baptised on 6 September 1840 in Slaugham.

George Vaughan was baptised on 18 October 1840 in Slaugham.

Emma Vaughan was born about 1844 in Worth. When the 1851
census was recorded she was a 7 year old scholar living at home with her
parents.
-
William Comber was baptised privatley on 26 February 1799 in Slaugham and
buried there on 21 June 1827, aged 27 years.
-
Phelle Comber was baptised on 25 January 1801 in Slaugham.
She was probably a widow by the time the 1841 census was recorded and
living at Welshgate in Upper Beeding, along with 4 children and 25 year
old William Akhurst. The 1851 census records that she was a
50 year old widow and living at Plummers in Lower Beeding along with 2
children. On census night the family had visitor staying with them,
namely, 25 year old Joseph Vaughan.
As
Phyllis Coomber she married Richard Baines on 2 December
1823 in Upper Beeding, Sussex.
Richard and Philadelphia had the following known children:

Sally Baines was baptised on 7 November 1824 in Slaugham.

George Baines was baptised on 9 October 1825 in Slaugham.

William Baines was baptised on 13 April 1827 in Slaugham. In
1841 he was a 14 year old shoemakers apprentice and the eldest of his
siblings living at home.

Edwin Baines was baptised on 13 April 1827 in Slaugham.
-
Thomas Baines was baptised on 28 September 1828 in Slaugham.
He was 11 years old in 1841.
-
Andrew Baines was baptised on 9 January 1831 in Slaugham. He
died or was buried on 27 May 1834.
-
Stephen Baines was born about 1833 in
Beeding. In 1841 he was 7 years old. He married
Rebecca Anscombe in the first quarter of 1857 in the Newington
registration district. She was the daughter of
Allen Anscombe and
Mary Scutt.

Mahala Baines was baptised on 23 October 1836 in Slaugham.
She was 5 years old in 1841.

Fanney Comber was baptised on 20 March 1803 in Slaugham. She
married ? Fielden.

Maria Comber was baptised on 21 October 1804 in Slaugham and buried
there on 10 May 1832, aged 26 years.

Sarah Comber was baptised on 11 October 1807 in Slaugham and buried
there on 2 March 1828, aged 22 years.
-
Richard Bartley Comber was baptised on 15 May 1808 in Slaugham and
buried there on 20 July 1825, aged 18 years.

Thomas Comber
was baptised on 22 April 1810 in Slaugham. He
