John COMBER (1798-?)

and Mary DADSWELL (1803-1847)

John Comber and Mary Dadswell married by banns on 19 November 1825 in Rotherfield, Sussex.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Rotherfield.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Mary was probably the half sister of my 3x great grandmother Frances Dadswell.)

John Comber was baptised on 11 November 1798 in Rotherfield, Sussex.  He was the son of James Comber and Jane.  John may have died aged 72 years and his death registered as John Coomber in the second quarter of 1871 in the East Grinstead, Sussex registration district.

Mary Dadswell may have been baptised on 20 March 1803 in Rotherfield and have been the daughter of Robert Dadswell (1784-1852) and Frances Baldock (1776-1808).  Mary died aged 44 years and was buried on 23 May 1847 in Rotherfield.  There were 2 other Mary's baptised in Rotherfield:  13 October 1803 daughter of Thomas Dadswell and Ann Day; and 18 November 1804 daughter of Robert Dadswell (1773-1853) and Mary Finch (c1777-1820).

When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and 6 children (James, Eliza, George, Jane, John and Richard) were living at Hole Farm in Rotherfield.  John was then said to be a 40 year old agricultural labourer and Mary was 35.

In 1851, John was a 52 year old widower, pauper and agricultural labourer.  He was living at Hole Farm in Rotherfield along with his 5 children (George, John, Jane, Harriett and Mary).  The family were living next door to, or sharing a property with the family of 40 year old William Dadswell.

The 1861 census recorded that 65 year old John was living at Pellings in Rotherfield, along with his son John.  They were both agricultural labourer.  They were said to be visitors in the household of 73 year old James Dadswell and his wife Mary.
