John COMBER (1725-1785)

and Jane OBARD (1733-1805)

John Comber and Jane Obard married by banns on 28 April 1761 in West Hoathly, Sussex.  At the time they were both of West Hoathly and both able to sign their names.  The witnesses to the marriage were Stephen Sawyer, junior (see notes below), and Bristow Burjery, who both signed their names.  The banns were published on 22 and 29 March and 5 April 1761, by Edmund Robertson the Curate, who also married the couple.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  John was the nephes of my 6x Great Grandmother, Anne Comber.)

John Comber was baptised on 21 March 1724/5 in Ardingly, Sussex.  He was the son of John Comber (1692-1672) and Catherine Illman (1691-1692).  John died on 3 July and was buried on 6 July 1785 in West Hoathly.  His will was dated 14 February 1785 and proved on 28 July 1786.  He was a yeoman of Stonelands in West Hoathly.  John was the Executor to his father's will in 1762 and to his Uncle William Comber in 1778.  He was a Churchwarden in 1762 and 1765.

Jane Obbard was baptised on 23 February 1732/3 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex.  She was the daughter of William Obbard and Catherine.  Jane died on 22 March 1805 in Crowhurst, Surrey.

John Comber and Jane Obard had 7 known children:

  1. John Comber was baptised on 9 July 1762 in West Hoathly.  He died on 16 January 1836 in Maresfield, Sussex.

John married twice, firstly to Sarah Tully by licence on 21 June 1786 in Ardingly.  Their marriage licence was issued on 20 June 1786 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes.  It noted that John was a bachelor of West Hoathly and Sarah a spinster of Ardingly.

Sarah was baptised on 26 February 1764 and was the daughter of John Tully and Sarah Isted.  She died on 7 November 1797.  (Sarah's sister Mary Tully married Richard Comber on 4 August 1783 in Lindfield, Sussex.)

John and Sarah had 7 known children:

    1. Sarah Comber was born on 20 August 1786 and baptised on 8 September 1786 in Ardingly.

    2. Jane Comber was baptised on 31 March 1788 in West Hoathly.

    3. Mary Elizabeth Comber was born on 15 June 1790 and baptised on 6 July 1790 in Ardingly.

    4. Elizabeth Comber was born on 20 July 1792 and baptised on 14 August 1792 in Ardingly.

    5. Catherine Comber was privately baptised on 16 February 1794 in West Hoathly and admitted to the Church on 6 May 1794 in Ardingly.

    6. Harriet Comber was born on 29 March 1796 and baptised on 18 April 1796 in Ardingly.

    7. John Comber was privately baptised on 10 October 1797 in West Hoathly.  He was of Stonelands and later of Broadhurst in Horsted Keynes, Sussex.  In 1841 he also held Goddenwick in Lindfield.  He died aged 75 years on 9 February 1872 and was buried in West Hoathly.

John married Esther Head on 20 January 1830 in Horley, Surrey.

John and Esther were the 2x Great Grandparents of Andrea Biddolph.  She tells me that Esther's father William left a will dated 1832 in which he mentioned a nephew William Alston Head a solicitor who was the son of John Head and Sarah of Lingfield.  But when and where were the brothers William and John born?  Could they have been the sons of William Head and Ann Turner who married by licence 17 June 1770 in Crowhurst, Surrey?

Esther was born in Crowhurst, Surrey and was the daughter of William Turner Head and Sarah.  She died aged 81 years at Elstree, Hertfordshire on 2 February 1892 and was buried in West Hoathly.

John and Esther had 9 known children - 5 sons and 4 daughters.  Their son John Turner Coomber (1841-?) was Andrea's Great Grandfather.  He and his family emigrated to Australia in 1883.

John next married Sarah Isted on 11 April 1805 in West Hoathly.  They were both of West Hoathly.

John and Sarah may have had the following daughters:

    1. Rebecca Comber was baptised on 5 August 1804 in West Hoathly.

    2. Sophia Comber was baptised on 16 September 1804 in West Hoathly.

    3. Ann Comber was born on 14 September 1806 and baptised on 10 November 1806 in West Hoathly.

  2. Jenny Comber was baptised on 15 July 1764 in West Hoathly.  She was mentioned in her father's will of 1785.  Her will was dated 17 January 1787 and proved on 17 March 1787.

As Jane Comber of West Hoathly she married Thomas Stanbridge of Ardingly by banns on 30 March 1785 in Ardingly.  He was the only son and heir of Thomas Stanbridge.  Thomas junior was buried in Ardingly on 8 March 1786.  His will was dated 1 March 1786 and proved on 8 April 1786.  He left his wife "Wheeler's Field" which had been purchased by his father.

  3. Mary Comber was baptised on 13 April 1766 in West Hoathly.  She was mentioned in the wills of her father and sister Jenny.

  4. Catherine Comber was baptised on 3 April 1768 in West Hoathly.  She was mentioned in the wills of her father and sister Jenny.

  5. Thomas Comber was baptised on 1 April 1770 in West Hoathly.  He was mentioned in his father's will of 1785 and that of his sister Jenny in 1787.

  6. Elizabeth Comber was baptised on 29 September 1771 in West Hoathly.  She was mentioned in the wills of her father and sister Jenny.

  7. Sarah Comber was baptised on 17 June 1774 in West Hoathly.  She was mentioned in the wills of her father and sister Jenny.

Stephen Sawyer, junior (mentioned above), was a witness to the 1761 marriage of John Comber and Jane Obard.  He was born about 1726.  He died aged 46 years and was buried on 9 May 1772 in West Hoathly.  He was the son of Stephen Sawyer (1690-1761) and Elizabeth Gatland.  His Grandparents were Thomas Sawyer (1663-?) and Mary Green, and William Gatland and Elizabeth Cheale.
