John COMBER (1692-1762)

and Catherine ILLMAN (1691-1762)

 

John Comber and Catherine Illman married on 4 June 1724 in Balcombe, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  John was the brother of my 6x Great Grandmother, Anne Comber.)

John Comber was baptised on 12 February 1691/2 in Balcombe.  He was the eldest son of John Comber (1660-1729) and Judith White (1666-1726) - he did have an elder brother who died in infancy.  John died aged 69 years and was buried on 18 September 1762 in Ardingly, Sussex.  He received One Guinea under the terms of his father's will, and was mentioned in his brother William's will of 1778.  His own will was dated 18 September 1762 and was proved on 23 October 1762. 

Catherine Illman was baptised on 23 August 1691 in Ardingly.  She was the daughter of Thomas Illman and Mary Sayers.  Catherine died aged 71 years and was buried on 6 November 1762 in Ardingly. 

The family lived at Newhouse in Ardingly. 

 

John Comber and Catherine Illman had 6 known children: 

  1. John Comber was baptised on 21 March 1724/5 in Ardingly.  He married Jane Obard in 1761.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Thomas Comber was born on 30 September 1726 and baptised on 16 October 1726 in Ardingly, and buried there on 2 March 1728/9.

  3. Francis Comber was born and baptised on 6 August 1728 in Ardingly and buried there on 11 August 1728.

  4. Thomas Comber was born on 5 July 1729 and baptised on 20 July 1729 in Ardingly.  He married Emme Cresey in 1761.  (They have their own page.)

  5. William Comber was born on 23 January 1731/2 and baptised on 30 January 1731/2 in Ardingly.  He was of 'Bagpiths' in Balcombe, which his wife had inherited from her father.  He was mentioned in his father's will and that of his Uncle William Comber.

    William married Ann Wheatley on 21 June 1763 in Balcombe.

    Ann was buried on 29 July 1765.

    William and Ann had 2 known children:

    1. John Comber inherited 'Bagpiths'.  He died on 16 March 1847 and was buried in Balcombe on 22 March 1847.

      John married Sarah Streatfield on 5 May 1804 in Balcombe.

      Sarah was the daughter of John Streatfield and Mary Kingsland of 'Monks' in Balcombe, who were previously of Hartfield, Sussex.  She died aged 47 years and was buried on 23 June 1826 in Balcombe.

      John and Sarah had 7 known children:

      1. Richard Comber was baptised on 25 August 1805 in Balcombe.  He was born at 'Monks'.  He was buried in Balcombe on 22 November 1839.  Richard married Elizabeth Mitchell on 3 December 1831 in Balcombe.  She was the daughter of Henry Mitchell of 'Woodards' in Balcombe.  Elizabeth died in 1860.  The couple had 5 known children.

      2. Elizabeth Comber was baptised on 31 May 1807 in Balcombe.  She died aged 82 years on 9 June and was buried on 13 June 1889 in Balcombe.

      3. Thomas Comber was baptised on 14 January 1810 in Balcombe.  He died in 1886.  He married Esther Dench on 30 September 1837 in Balcombe.  She was the daughter of William Dench.

      4. John Comber was baptised on 22 January 1815 in Balcombe.  He died on 31 May 1889 and was buried in Balcombe.  He married Celia who died on 24 June and was buried in Balcombe on 27 June 1881.  John sold 'Bagpiths' to his nephew John.

      5. James Comber was born about 1818.  He died aged 13 years and was buried in Balcombe on 16 October 1831.

    2. William Comber was baptised on 25 February 1764 in Balcombe.

    Did William then marry Ann Standing before 1766?  William and Ann had 2 known children:

    1. Ann Standing Comber was baptised on 19 November 1766 in Balcombe.

    2. Thomas Illman Comber was baptised on 8 October 1775 in Balcombe and buried there on 6 May 1776.

  6. Elizabeth Comber was born on 13 June 1734 and baptised on 23 June 1734 in Ardingly.  She married William Henty on 10 November 1763 in Balcombe.
