George COMBER
(1831-?)
and Sarah STREETER (1835-?)

George Comber and Sarah Ann Streater
married on 7 April 1862 in Rotherfield, Sussex. He was 28 and she 26
years old. Their fathers were named as John Coomber
and James Streater. (They were not my direct
ancestors. George was most probably the nephew of my
3x great grandmother Frances
Dadswell.)
George Comber was born at Turks and baptised on 4
December 1831 in Rotherfield. He was the son of
John Comber (1798-?) and
Mary Dadswell
(1803-1847). In 1841 he was 9 years old and living
with his parents at Hole Farm, Rotherfield. He was a 19 year old
agricultural labourer in 1851 and again living at Hole Farm with his
parents. When the 1861 census was recorded he was a 28 year old
agricultural labourer, visiting the home of the family of his sister
Eliza Pattenden at Pellings in Rotherfield. George may have
died between 1875 and 1881.
Sarah Streeter was baptised on 22 March 1835 in
Rotherfield. She was the daughter of
James Streeter
(1811-?) and
Sarah Pratt
(1814-?). When the 1841 census was recorded she was 6 years old
and living with her mother in Crowborough. In 1851 she was 16
years old and living with her parents at Holly Bridge in Rotherfield.
At the time of the 1861 census she was an unmarried 24 year old general
servant in the home of 38 year old Moses Pratt at the
grocers shop in Withyham (Moses was her uncle).
When the 1871 census was recorded the couple and 3 children (Frances,
Alfred and Elizabeth) were living at Knole Cottage in Frant.
George was then said to be a 33 (I assume this should be 38) year old
agricultural labourer and Sarah was 37. He gave his place of birth
as Rotherfield and she as Buxted. Also with them was 16 year old
sister-in-law,
Naomi
Streeter.
By the time of the 1881 census, Sarah Coomber was said to
have been a 45 year old widow and she was living in Pilmer Road,
Rotherfield, along with her 3 daughters (Elizabeth, Rose and Ellen).
Sarah was then a charwoman.
In 1891, Sarah was living at 46 Dukes Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, where
she was a 53 year old widow and charwoman. She was sharing the
property with 50 year old widow Jane Welch and her 2
sons and 48 year old widower Mathew Knight.

were both 28 years old and Walter was a general labourer. His
place of birth was recorded as Rotherfield and hers as Frant. Also
with the family was Frances's sister Rose Coomber.
