Francis COMBER (1727-1771)

and Mary MARTIN (c1730-?)

Francis Comber and Mary Martin married on 17 April 1752 in Lindfield, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Francis was the nephew of my 6x Great Grandmother, Anne Comber.)

Francis Comber was baptised on 17 March 1726/7 in Lindfield.  He was the son of Francis Comber (1695-1756) and Anne Neale (1696-1769).  Francis was buried in Lindfield on 8 July 1771.  He was his father's heir.

Mary Martin's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.

Francis Comber and Mary Martin had 5 known children:

1. Elizabeth Comber was baptised on 4 February 1753 in Lindfield.

2. Mary Comber was born on 7 August 1754 and baptised on 1 September 1754 in Lindfield.

   Mary married Henry Mitchell of Chailey on 29 June 1773 in Ardingly.

   Henry and Mary couple had 12 known children.

3. John Comber was baptised on 11 January 1755/6  in Lindfield.

4. Richard Comber was baptised on 12 March 1758 in Lindfield.  He married Mary Tully in 1783.  (They have their own page.)

5. Francis Comber was baptised on 28 December 1760 in Lindfield.  He died aged 59 years on 17 February 1820 and was buried on 21 February 1820 in Lindfield.  His will was dated 18 November 1813 and proved on 11 April 1820.  Francis like his maternal grandfather was a butcher.

   Francis married twice, firstly to Mary Turner on 2 November 1791 in Ardingly.

   Mary was born on 21 February 1773 and baptised on 6 April 1773 in Ardingly, and was the eldest daughter of John Turner and Mary Davy.  Mary died aged 19 years and was buried on 29 May 1792 in Ardingly.

   Francis then married Elizabeth Turner on 7 August 1793 in Balcombe.

   Elizabeth died on 15 May 1831 aged 59 years and was buried on 20 May 1831 in Lindfield.  She left a will dated 10 February 1829 which was proved on 7 June 1831.  She nominated her brother Thomas Turner and William Allen as trustees.  She may have been baptised on 28 April 1772 in Cuckfield and have been the daughter of Thomas Turner and Jane Unwins.

   Francis and Elizabeth had 9 known children:

   1. Thomas Comber was born on 25 July 1794 and baptised on 2 September 1794 in Lindfield.  He died aged 9 years on 22 October and was buried in Lindfield on 26 October 1803.

   2. Elizabeth Comber was born on 17 February 1796 and baptised on 16 March 1796.  She died aged 26 years at St. Marylebone in London and was buried on 15 March 1822 in Lindfield.

   3. Mary Comber was born on 1 February 1798 and baptised on 28 February 1798 in Lindfield.  She died aged 81 years on 16 October 1879 and was buried in Tudeley, Kent.

      Marye married John Wheeler of Tudeley on 13 May 1828 in Lindfield.

      John died aged 78 years on 4 December 1878 and was buried in Tudeley.

   4. Jane Comber was born on 19 February 1800 and baptised on 9 March 1800 in Lindfield.  She died aged 17 years on 9 June and was buried on 13 June 1817.

   5. Turner Comber was born on 1 February and baptised on 7 February 1802 in Lindfield.  He died a bachelor aged 78 years on 20 April 1880 and was buried in Lindfield.  He was a witness to his sister Mary's marriage in 1828.

   6. Harriott Comber was born on 12 October 1805 in Lindfield.  She died aged 87 years on 5 April 1892 in Cuckfield, but was buried in Lindfield.  Her will was dated 13 July 1882 and proved on 17 June 1892.

   7. John Comber was born on 2 July 1809 and baptised on 27 August 1809 in Lindfield.  He died aged 60 years on 3 September 1869 at Merton, Surrey and was buried Mitcham.

      John married Elizabeth Briggs on 6 November 1838 in Dorking, Surrey.

      Elizabeth was the daughter of Charles Briggs of Brighton, hatter to King George IV and Sarah Cooke.

   8. Francis Comber was born on 24 August 1811 and baptised on 4 October 1811 in Lindfield.  He died a bachelor aged 68 years on 28 May 1880 and was buried in Lindfield.  He left a will dated 11 May 1880 which was proved on 14 July 1880.

   9. Helen Comber was born on 15 November 1814 and baptised on 19 March 1815 in Lindfield.

      Helen married John Weston of Brighton.
