John COLBRAN (1746-?)

and Mary CARRETT (c1749-?)

John Colebrand and Mary Carrett married on 2 January 1773 at the parish church of St. Margaret's in Buxted, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Colbran was baptised on 11 February 1745/6 in Buxted.  He was the son of Edward Colebrand (1716-?) and Hannah Uridge.

Mary Carrett may have been born about 1749.  She may have died in 1842.  She was probably the daughter of David Carret and Ann Devonish who married in 1746 in Buxted.

At the time of the 1841 census, 92 year old Mary was the head of her household at Hurstwood in Buxted and she was said to be farmer.  Also with her on census night was her son Edward.

John Colbran and Mary Carrett had 10 known children:

1. Edward Colbran was baptised on 16 October 1774 in Buxted.  Edward married Mary Vinal by banns on 31 October 1799 in Buxted.  Edward was 66 years old in 1841 and living with his mother.

2. Mary Colebran was baptised on 27 May 1776 in Buxted.

Mary married Robert or William Wilmshurst by banns on 26 March 1799 in Buxted.  They were both then of Buxted.  (The Sussex marriage index records his name as William and the IGI as Robert - the original register needs to be checked.)

Robert was baptised on 30 November 1775 in Buxted and was the son of John Wilmshurst and Hannah Frost (1739-?).

Robert and Mary had the following children:

1. Hannah Wilmshurst was baptised on 18 August 1799 in Buxted.

2. John Wilmshurst was baptised on 19 April 1801 in Buxted.

3. Thomas Wilmshurst was baptised on 10 July 1803 in Buxted.  He made a statement during the Ashdown Forest Dispute that his uncle was Edward Dadswell.

4. Mary Anne Wilmshurst was baptised on 3 November 1805 in Buxted.

5. William Wilmshurst was baptised on 3 July 1808 in Buxted.  William married Elizabeth Martin and they had:

   1. Joseph Wilmshurst was born in 1837.  He married Naomi Head in 1861.

6. Robert Wilmshurst was baptised on 1 July 1810 in Buxted.

7. Edward Williamhurst was baptised on 22 August 1813 in Buxted.

8. Elizabeth Colbran Wilmshurst was baptised on 9 March 1817 in Buxted.

3. Barbara Colbran was baptised on 7 February 1779 in Buxted.  She married William Charles Dadswell in 1804.  (They have their own page.)

4. John Colbran was baptised on 20 August 1780 in Buxted.  John married Jemima Wilmshurst by banns on 29 March 1806 in Buxted.  In 1841 John was 60 years old and living along at ?ool House in Buxted.

5. William Colbran was baptised on 14 July 1782 in Buxted.

   William married Mary Martin Jarrett by banns on 5 December 1814 in Ringmer.  He was then of Buxted.

   When the 1841 census was recorded William was a 57 year old smith living at Hurstwood in Buxted along with his 49 year old wife Mary.

   William and Mary had the following children:

   1. Mary Martin Colbran was baptised on 20 June 1817 in Buxted.

   2. Lucy Colbran was baptised on 17 March 1822 in Buxted.

6. Elizabeth Colbrand was baptised on 4 April 1784 in Buxted.

   Elizabeth married Edward Dadswell on 23 June 1821 in Buxted.

   Edward was baptised on 30 January 1769 in Buxted and was the son of Edward Dadswell and Mary Taylor.

7. Thomas Colbran was born in 1786.

8. Ann Colebran was baptised on 10 August 1788 in Buxted.

9. David Colbran was baptised in April 1790 in Buxted.

10. Hannah Colebran was baptised on 15 July 1792 in Buxted.

    Hannah married William Dadswell on 20 September 1818 in Buxted.

    William may have been born about 1790.  Might he have been baptised on 3 April 1791 in Rotherfield, Sussex, the son of James Dadswell and Mary Brooker?

    At the time of the 1841 census the couple were living in St. Thomas Street in Lewes.  William was then a 50 year old timber sawyer and Hannah was 49.  Also with them on census night were 6 of their children.

    William and Hannah had 10 known children:

    1. Mary Dadswell was baptised on 24 January 1819 in Buxted.  Mary married William Evenden on 22 February 1841 in Buxted.

    2. James Dadswell was baptised on 8 October 1820 in Buxted.  He was a 20 year old labourer in 1841 and living at home.

    3. Hannah Dadswell was baptised on 19 May 1822 at All Saints in Lewes, Sussex

    4. Eliza Dadswell was baptised on 24 August 1823 in Buxted.  She was 17 years old in 1841 and living at home

    5. William Dadswell was born in 1825.  He was a 15 year old labourer in 1841.

    6. Amelia Dadswell was baptised on 3 June 1827 in Brighton and buried there on 10 June 1827.

    7. John Dadswell was born in 1829.  In 1841 he was 12 years old.

    8. Lucy Dadswell was born in 1831 and buried on 29 March 1831 in Brighton.

    9. Annie Dadswell was born in 1833.  In 1841 she was 8 years old.

    10. George Dadswell was born in 1834.  He was 6 years old in 1841.

The baptism dates of the 5 daughters have come from the IGI.  The names of the sons and their year of birth have come from family trees listed at Ancestry.co.uk and their baptism dates from The Weald website.  All the data needs to be checked against original parish registers.
