Henry CHANELL
(1645-1728)
and unknown
(?-?)

Henry Chanell may have married sometime before or about 1671 and possibly near Petworth,
Sussex, but no possible marriage has been found for him in the Sussex
marriage index, nor does his wife appear to have been buried in the same
parish as him. The Surrey marriage index records that a Henry
Chennell and Marie Chennell married on 13 May 1667 in Wotton,
Surrey. He was then of Ockley, Surrey and she of Wotton. Ockley
to Petworth is about 20 miles, whilst Wotton to Petworth is about 30 miles.
But, that Henry may have been born in 1632 in Wonersh, Surrey.
Henry Chanel was baptised in November 1645 in Petworth, Sussex.
He was the son of Henry Chanel. A transcript of the Petworth
burial register records the burial of 73 year old Henry Chanell on 30
July 1728, therefore, born about 1655. Might his age have been wrongly
recorded or transcribed? No further siblings of Henry were baptised in
Petworth, nor were his parents buried there, unless their surname has been
miss recorded. The Surrey marriage index records that a
Henry Chennell
married Margaret
Moore on 27 November 1637 in Abinger. Abinger to Petworth is
about 25 miles. However, that couple seem to have had several children
baptised in Wotton, including a Marie Chennell in 1640 and a Henry
Chennell in 1645.
Did Henry have an Uncle named Frances Chanell, gent, who was buried
on 31 July 1648 in Petworth? Or might Francis have been his
grandfather? A Francis Chanell had a son or daughter named
Frances baptised on 23 April 1648 and another in February 1650 in Petworth,
at which time he was described as Doctor and Rector of Petworth.
Henry Chanell and unknown
had 3 known children:
-
Sarah
Chanell was baptised on 21 July
1672 in Petworth. She married
Richard
Bound in 1692. (They have their own page.)
-
Seusana Chanell was baptised on 26 August 1675 in Petworth.
She died aged 86 years and was buried on 7 February 1761 in Petworth.
The burial register records that she was Susanna Bean,
widow.
As Susanna Chanell she married John Beane on 29 October 1704
in Petworth.
John was baptised on 3 December 1672 in Petworth and was the son of
Thomas Beane and Elizabeth Beane, who had married on 14
September 1664 in Petworth. A John Bean, snr, was buried on
12 February 1757 in Petworth.
John and Susanna had the following children:
-
Sussanna Bean was baptised on 16 December 1705 in Petworth.
-
John Beane was baptised on 2? October 1707 in Petworth and buried
there on 30 October 1707.
-
John Beane was baptised on 9 April 1710 in Petworth.
-
William Beane was baptised on 8 April 1713 in Petworth. He
may have married Ann Greenfield by licence on 12 February 1733/4
in Wiggonholt cum Greatham, Sussex. Their licence was issued on 12
February 1733/4 by the Archdeanconry of Chichester and it recorded that
William was of Petworth and Ann of Billingshurst. Surety for the
licence was provided by William himself and John Bean of
Petworth.
-
John Chanell was baptised on 27 February 1679/9 in Petworth.
He may have died on 5 May 1697 and have been buried the next day in
Petworth.
Were the following in anyway related:
-
Henry Cheynell of Cranleigh and Mary Miller of Chichester,
Sussex, married on 10 August 1690 in Cranleigh, Surrey and/or Slindon,
Sussex.
-
Henry Chanels and Susannah had the following daughter:
-
Susannah Chanels was born on 11 October 1728 and baptised on 13
October 1728 in Petworth.
A Susan Chanels married John Cappindore on 4 December 1737
in Petworth.
