and Joan ILGATE (?-1632)
Nicholas Catt and Joan Ilgate married by licence on
23 September 1609 in Rotherfield, Sussex. Their marriage licence was
issued on 21 September 1609 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes which recorded that
he was a husbandman of Rotherfield and she a spinster of Selscombe (Sedlescombe?).
He or another
married Ann Freeman on 21
September 1607 in Ewhurst, Sussex. He was then of Hawkhurst, Kent,
whilst Ann was of Ewhurst. Yet another
married Ann Hyam
on 17 July 1615 in Westfield, Sussex.
Nicholas Catt's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.
It is unlikey he was baptised on 27 September 1579 in Rotherfield,
Sussex, the son of
Nicholas Catt (1545-1598) and
(1552-?), as Nicholas senior left a will and did not mention his son
Nicholas. Might he have been the son of Nicholas Catt
and Margaret Gye (?-1611) who had married in 1577 in East
Hoathly. (Margaret was buried in Ticehurst on 28 May 1611 - thanks to
Lesley McHale for this date.)
Joan Ilgate's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown,
to me. She was probably buried on 24 September 1632 in Ticehurst, as
the wife of Nicholas Catt - thanks to Lesley McHale
for passing on the date.
20 July 1636, a
Nicholas Catt was in occupation of lands in Ticehurst.
Nicholas Catt and
Joan Ilgate may have had the following children:
was baptised on 30 May 1619 in Ticehurst, Sussex. Might he have been
buried as John Kytt on 9 January 1638 in Ticehurst?
Elizabeth Catt was baptised on 5 August 1621 in Ticehurst.
Wood in 1641 and they may have been my 9x Great Grandparents.
(They have their own page.)
Catt of Mountfield left a will in 1659, in which he mentioned his
daughter Elizabeth Peckham, therefore, he was not the
father of the Elizabeth married to Laurence Wood, as they
had children born in 1655 and 1660.
daughter of Nicholas Catt was buried on 7 September 1609 in
Ticehurst - thanks to Lesley McHale for finding this piece
of the puzzle.
