John CATT (1684-1740)

and Mary MORGAN (c1690-1762)

 

John Catt and Mary Morgan may have married in 1711.  A marriage licence was issued on 4 June 1711 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes.  It recorded that John was a yeoman of Ewhurst, Sussex.  However, there is an entry in the Sussex marriage index that notes the banns were published in Mountfield, Sussex in June 1711 between John Catt of Ewhurst and Mary Morgan.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Catt was baptised on 24 May 1684 in Ewhurst.  He was the son of Stephen Catt (1655-1732) and Elizabeth Coleman (1657-1713).  He was buried on 5 April 1740 in Ewhurst.

Mary Morgan's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.

 

John Catt and Mary Morgan had 8 known children:

  1. John Catt was born on 29 January 1711/2 and baptised on 20 June 1712 in Westfield.  He was buried there on 25 July 1720.

  2. Stephen Catt was baptised on 4 April 1714 in Westfield.  He was buried there on 6 April 1774.  Stephen marriage Mary Langridge on 30 March 1741 in Sedlescombe, Sussex.  He was then of Westfield and she of Sedlescombe.  Mary was baptised on 25 May 1718 in Dallington and buried on 22 April 1772 in Westfield.

  3. Solomon Catt was born/baptised on 2/3 October 1715 or 29 December 1715 in Westfield.  He was buried on 10 August 1787 in Westfield.

    Solomon married Elizabeth Stedman by licence on 2 February 1740/1 at St. Clements in Hastings, Sussex.  He was then of Westfield.

    Elizabeth was baptised on 14 February 1722/3 at All Saints, Hastings and was the daughter of William Stedman and Elizabeth Jea.  She was buried on 21 June 1803 in Westfield.

    Solomon and Elizabeth had the following children:

    1. John Catt was baptised on 27 December 1741 in Westfield and buried there on 4 April 1742.

    2. Solomon Catt was baptised on 27 March 1742 in Westfield and buried there on 29 December 1749.

    3. John Catt was baptised on 21 December 1744 in Westfield.

    4. Stephen Catt was baptised on 15 December 1745 in Westfield and buried there on 29 October 1750.

    5. William Catt was baptised on 29 April 1748 in Westfield and buried there on 21 January 1763.

    6. Ann Catt was baptised on 28 Febraury 1749/50 in Westfield.

    7. Solomon Catt was baptised on 23 October 1751 in Westfield and buried there on 27 October 1751.

    8. Mary Catt was baptised on 25 April 1753 in Westfield.  She was buried there on 21 September 1792.  Mary married Thomas Ashdown on 22 April 1772 in Westfield.  He was then of Guestling, Sussex.  Thomas was baptised on 31 May 1741 in Ewhurst, Sussex and was the son of Thomas Ashdown and Sarah Rogers.

    9. James Catt was baptised on 23 June 1755 in Westfield.  He died aged 64 years on 6 July 1819 and was buried on 11 July 1819 in Westfield.  John married Ann Ashdown on 27 October 1773 in Westfield.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Ashdown and Solomon Catt.  Ann was baptised on 29 January 1756 in Westfield and was the daughter of Nicholas Ashdown and Mary Henley.  She died on 9 December 1839 and was buried on 12 December 1839 in Westfield.

    10. Solomon Catt was baptised on 24 April 1757 in Westfield and buried there on 1 May 1757.

    11. Martha Catt was baptised on 30 April 1758 in Westfield.  She was buried on 7 January 1819 in Ore, Sussex.  Martha married Johnson Gain on 8 November 1779 in Westfield.  He was baptised on 15 January 1760 in Brede and was buried on 4 December 1840 in Ore.

    12. Sarah Catt was baptised on 8 March 1761 in Westfield.  Sarah married John Burt by banns on 17 July 1785 in Westfield.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Hayword and Jeffery Blackman.

    13. William Catt was baptised on 8 May 1763 in Westfield and buried there on 24 June 1763.

  4. Elizabeth Catt was baptised on 19 April 1719 in Westfield and buried there on 17 January 1719/20.

  5. Mary Catt was baptised on 28 May 1721 in Westfield and buried there on 6 July 1723.

  6. Thomas Catt was baptised on 1 July 1722 in Westfield.  Thomas married Mary Stapler on 19 May 1752 in Sedlescombe.

  7. Samuel Catt was born about 1724-7.

  8. John Catt was baptised on 23 June 1728 in Westfield.  He died aged 89 years and was buried on 11 August 1817 in Westfield.

    John married Mary Vernon on 15 April 1754 in Westfield.

    Mary was buried on 5 December 1811 in Westfield.

    John and Mary had the following children:

    1. Elizabeth Catt was baptised on 28 November 1756 in Westfield.

    2. John Catt was baptised on 13 April 1759 in Westfield.

    3. Stephen Catt was baptised on 29 August 1762 in Westfield.

    4. Solomon Catt was baptised on 19 May 1765 in Westfield.

    5. James Catt was baptised on 2 August 1767 in Westfield.

    6. Mary Catt was baptised on 6 September 1770 in Westfield.

    7. William Catt was baptised on 4 June 1772 in Westfield.
