The Will of
John CAPLIN
(1639-1670)

In the name of God Amen I
John
Caplin of Ashington in the County of Sussex yeoman sick in
body but of good and perfect memory this five and twentieth day of August in
the twentieth yeare of the Raigne of our Soviargne Lord Kinge Charles the
second And in the yeare of our Lord Christ 1668 doe make constitute and
ordaine this my last will and Testament in manner and forme following
First I comitt my soule into the hands of God hoping for salvation
through the merrits of Jesus Christ Item I give and bequeath to my
loving wife the feather bed in the hall chamber on which I now lye and all
that belongeth unto the said bed and Twenty pounds to be paid her within one
yeare and a halfe after my decease Item I give and bequeath to my
Sonne Thomas Caplin Five and Twenty pounds of lawfull English money
Item I give and bequeath unto John Caplin my youngest sonne
five and Twenty pounds to be paid unto the overseers of this my will within
one yeare next after my decease for the use of my said sonne John to
be paid him at his Age of one and Twenty yeares by the said overseers And in
case the said John shall not for longe live Then my will and meaning
is that the said five and Twenty pounds shall be equally divided and paid to
such of the rest of my Children as shall survive the said John and to
them And to them I give and bequeath it by this will And my will is that the
profitt which shall be made of the said and five and Twenty pounds shall be
employed by my overseers towards his education Item I give and
bequeath unot my sonne Richard Caplin and to my three daughters
Elizabeth Margery and Mary the sume of Twenty pounds apiece to be
paid by my Executor within one yeare and ahalfe next after my decease to my
overseers [---] for their severall and respective ages And by them my said
overseers to be paid to my said three children at their severall and
respective ages of one and Twenty yeares And if any of my said daughters or
my said sonne Richard shall happen to dye before the age of one and
twenty yeares then I will that the portion of him or her or them soe dying
shall be equally divided amongst all my surviving Children and to them bee
paid by my said overseers at their severall ages of one and twenty yeares
And my will and meaning is that the overseers of this my will shall employ
the profitts of the severall portions given and bequeathed to the above said
Richard Elizabeth Margery and Mary to the use of them my said
Children severally and respectively And furthermore my will and meaning is
that if my Estate shall amount to more than the sumes given and bequeathed
by this my will that then the [---] remainder after my debts and legacies
paid and funerall expenses and Executors charges paid shall be equally
divided between my wife my Executor and all my other children to them I give
and bequeath it by this my will Item I make and appoint my sonne
Thomas Caplyn to be the sole executor of this my will And I [---] my
loving friends Robert Norman of Ashington Walter Burt of West
Grinstead and my brother Thomas Caplyn to be the overseers of this my
will And I doe hereby revoake all former wills and testaments And I doe
publish and declare this to be my last will and testament the day and yeare
first above written In witness whereof I have sett my hand and seale The
marke of John Caplyn his was published and declared to be the last
will and Testament of John Caplyn above named in the presence of
Robert L---ds ~ John Tillett
