John CAPLIN (c1620-1670)

and Mary MOSE (?-?)

 

John Caplin and perhaps his first wife were my possible 9x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see his place in my pedigree chart.)  John may have married for a second time to Mary Mose on 30 June 1653 in Washington, Sussex.

John Caplin's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He left a will dated 25 August 1668 and proved in November 1670.  He was a yeoman of Ashington, Sussex.

Mary Mose date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  As Mary Capelin she may have married Thomas Wright by licence on 27 April 1673 in Ashurst.  Mary was then of Ashington and Thomas of Ashurst.

 

John Caplin and unknown had 1 known son:

  1. Thomas Caplin, my have been my 8x Great Grandfather.  He was appointed the sole executor of his father's will.  Thomas married Elizabeth Broomer in 1678.  (They have their own page.)  Given that his father made his will in 1668, I would think Thomas was over 21 by that point.  Also as his father married in 1653 and had a son baptised in 1654, then if Thomas was born afterwards, then he would only have 15 at the most when his father made his will.

 

John Caplin and Mary Mose had 5 known children:

  1. Richard Caplin was mentioned in his father's will.  He may have been born on 3 August 1654 and baptised on the same day in Shipley, Sussex.  Only his father's name was noted in the baptism register.

    As Richard Chaplin he may have married Susanna Towle on 29 May 1683 in Washington.

  2. Mary Caplin was mentioned in her father's will.  She may have been baptised on 27 May 1660 in Shipley.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

    Mary may have married Thomas Belchamber on 20 February 1682/3 in Ashington.

  3. John Caplin was baptised on 12 February 1665/6 in Ashington.  His mother was named as Mary.  He was mentioned in his father's will of 1668 as the youngest son and he was then under 21 years old.

  4. Elizabeth Caplin was mentioned in her father's will.

  5. Margery Caplin was mentioned in her father's will.
