Daniel CAPLIN (c1680-1732)

and Sarah (c1680-1739)

 

Daniel Caplin and Sarah were possibly my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They may have married before or about 1705.  No possible marriage has been found for them in the Sussex Family History Group's marriage index or the Sussex IGI.

Daniel Caplin's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He was the son of Thomas Caplin (c1645-1717) and Elizabeth Broomer (c1655-1732).  They married in Henfield, but I could not find a baptism for Daniel there or in Ashington where the couple settled from at least 1685, nor has anything found in the IGI.  Daniel was buried on 9 November 1732 in Ashington.  He was a Churchwarden of Ashington between 1702 and 1705.  Daniel was mentioned in his father's will of 1714.

Sarah's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried in Ashington on 3 November 1739.

 

Daniel Caplin and Sarah had 10 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Caplen was baptised on 23 April 1705 in Ashington.  Only her father's name was recorded against her baptism entry.

    As Elizabeth Capelen she married William Chambers on 30 September 1728 in Ashington.  He was baptised on 27 December 1703 in Ashington and was the son of William Chambers and  Mary Comber.

    William and Elizabeth had 4 known children:

    1. Thomas Chambers was baptised on 3 June 1729 in Ashington.

    2. Mary Chambers was baptised on 29 January 1731/2 in Ashington.

    3. William Chambers was baptised on 28 March 1734 in Ashington.

    4. Thomas Chambers was baptised on 28 March 1737 in Ashington, at which time his parents were of Washington.  He married Mary Skinner on 11 November 1762 in Ashington.  She was baptised on 17 May 1735 in Thakeham, Sussex.

  2. Sarah Caplen was baptised on 15 April 1707 in Ashington.  Again, only her father's name was shown against her baptism.

    As Sarah Caplin she married John Clouser by banns on 29 June 1735 in Ashington.

    John may have been baptised on 6 December 1708 in West Grinstead, Sussex and have been the son of John Clowser and Walsingham Willet (1683-?).

    John and Sarah had 2 known children:

    1. Mary Clouser was baptised on 1 February 1735/6 in Ashington.

    2. Daniel Cloudesly was baptised on 7 January 1737/8 in Ashington.

  3. John Caplen was baptised on 10 February 1708/9 in Ashington.

    As John Capelyn he married Sarah Holden on 4 April 1743 in Henfield.

    John and Sarah had 5 known children:

    1. William Capelyn was born on 19 March and baptised on 27 March 1745 in Henfield.

    2. John Capelyn was born on 28 January and baptised on 8 February 1746/7 in Henfield.

    3. Mary Capelyn was born on 16 August and baptised on 19 August 1748 in Henfield.

    4. Henry Capelyn was born on 24 July and baptised on 4 August 1751 in Henfield.

    5. Daniel Capelyn was born on 1 April and baptised on 7 April 1754 in Henfield.

  4. Daniel Capelin was baptised on 11 February 1710/11 in Ashington and buried there on 12 December 1745.

  5. Thomas Caplen was baptised on 26 March 1713 in Ashington and buried there on 30 May 1713.

  6. Mary Caplin, my possible 6x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 14 September 1714 in Ashington.  She married Thomas Ward (1716-1783) in 1740.  (They have their own page.)

  7. Hannah Caplen was baptised on 18 January 1715/6 in Ashington.

    Hannah married John Goddard on 9 November 1744 in Ashington.

    John and Hannah had 2 known children:

    1. Mary Goddard was baptised on 15 March 1745/6 at St. Nicholas, Brighton, Sussex.

    2. Sarah Goddard was baptised on 16 June 1751 at St. Nicholas in Brighton.

  8. William Caplen was baptised on 9 October 1718 in Ashington.

  9. Pernel Caplen was baptised on 26 September 1720 in Ashington.

    As Parnell Caplain she married Robert Cox on 5 May 1746 in Steyning, Sussex.

  10. James Capelen was baptised on 23 November 1722 in Ashington and buried there on 11 April 1723.

 

 

Miscellaneous Notes and Ramblings

John Clowser of Ashurst, Sussex married Ann Brown of Reigate by banns on 15 July 1742 in Ewhurst, Sussex.  Was he in any way related to the John Clowser mentioned above?
