John BYSSHE (c1470-1522)

and Joan REDINGERS (c1470-aft 1522)

John Bysshe and Joan Redingers were my 15x Great Grandparents.

John Bysshe was the eldest son of John Bysshe and Joan la Zouche.  He was appointed an executor of his father's 1494 will, and I would assume he was then over 21 years old.  His own will was dated 23 August 1522 and proved in London on 14 October 1522.  He then described himself as John Bysshe "of the Capell of Ukkefeld" and stated the he was "hole in mynde and fyt in bodye".  He left legacies to the churches in Burstow, Buxted, Uckfield, South Malling, and to the church where he was to be buried.  His eldest son William was appointed the executor, and John Snat, William Smyth and Robert Tyknor as overseers.  The witnesses to his will were Robert Bankehowse, John Snatt, Thomas Cails(?), William Day and Thomas Delf.  John also left legacies to his Godchildren, William Smythe, John Delf and Margret Hafilden.  At the time of his death he held the Manor of Redyngherst, lying in the parishes of "Craule, Haston, Gylford and Shallford".  Also mentioned in his will were, Richard Stone, Edmund Gray and Joane Chamberleyn.

Joan Redingers was the daughter and heir of John Redingers of Redinghurst in Surrey.  She was mentioned in her husband's will, therefore, I assume she died after him.

John Bysshe and Joan Redingers had 5 known children:

  1. 5 89 William Bysshe, my 14x Great Grandfather, may have been born before or about 1500.  He married Jane Wintershull.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Henry Bysshe was under 25 in 1522.  He was buried on 30 April 1580 in Burstow.  Henry married Joan.  Henry and Joan had the following children:

  3. John Bysshe was under 25 in 1522.

  4. Margaret Bysshe was unmarried in 1522.

  5. Elenor Bysshe was unmarried in 1522.

Many thanks to the Hurst History Study Group for a transcript of John's 1522 will.
